Awards herald new cricket season

The Annual Dumfries Cricket Club Awards were held at the Dumfries Sports Club at Nunholm last weekend. A big turnout, including major sponsors APD and JMS, saw the four main club awards presented.

2008 Cricket AwardsThe winner of the First Eleven Player of the Year award went to Davie Davidson for a season which saw him the club’s top run scorer in the Scottish National League with 424 runs at an average of just over 30, backed up with 19 wickets with the side’s best bowling strike rate and average.  Read the rest of this entry »

Dumfries Sports Club Quiz, Sat 29th March ’08

There is a Sports Club Quiz night on Saturday evening, 29th March at 7:30pm. This is open to all sections and includes a buffet. Teams of 4, and of all ages. Families welcome. Cost is £5 a head (to pay for the buffet). Any profit will be donated to charity.

Names of those interested can be added to the list behind the bar. Money will be collected on the night. 





Easter Cricket Coaching Camp, 7-10 April

There is a Cricket Scotland Coaching Camp taking place in Dumfries from Monday the 7th April to Thursday 10th April for girls and boys aged between 8 and 13 years (at the David Keswick Centre). Details here

This follows on from the successful 3-day Cricket Scotland summer camp which took place at the club last year.





Junior Squash Club Championships – Sun 30th March

The Junior Squash Club Championships are on Sunday, the 30th March. Matches start 12 noon – Final 5pm. Eye protection/refreshments are provided. Enter on the squash noticeboard. Closing date for entries is Tuesday, 25th March.





Squash Club Dance, Sat 19th April ’08

The Squash Club Dance will be held on Saturday, the 19th April 2008 in the clubhouse. Tickets will be available from behind the bar shortly. There will be a £50 prize ticket draw at 2130hrs. You must be in it to win it and be there to collect.

John Blain visit postponed to Saturday, 22nd March

Due to a horrible weather forecast for tomorrow (consistent heavy rain) the visit by Scotland player John Blain to the cricket club tomorrow for a coaching clinic has been postponed by 2 weeks. He will be down instead on Saturday the 22nd March as per the same arrangements, and he will also bring down any equipment ordered or requested then. We hope that this date does not give problems to anyone wanting to attend.

Squash Club Championship play-by dates

Due to the lateness of the draw please keep a sharp lookout for the play-by dates for the Club Championship. In order to complete the competition there could be day by day completion dates. If there are any problems please contact Sue Strachan, Peter Allan or Raymond Currie as soon as possible.

The draw will be up by Friday, 7th of March!





Free membership of British Tennis

The CEO of Tennis Scotland was on Radio Scotland on Saturday discussing the LTA’s new membership scheme. As Dumfries Tennis Club is an LTA affiliated club this means that adults can have FREE membership until the end of January 2009 (discounted thereafter), and juniors simply have free membership. In particular juniors can get coaching tips, newsletters and get involved with British Tennis.




Club’s Squash players selected for Scotland

The Scottish Masters Closed Championships took place last weekend in Aberdeen and had a strong representation from the Nunholm Squash Club.

Davy Rogan showed that 70 is the new 40 by winning the over-70 National Championships to add to his East and Central titles. Sue Strachan finished runner-up in the over-35 and over-40 competition.

As a result of Masters’ performances five players from the squash section have been selected to play for Scotland in the upcoming Home Internationals.

Jimmy Wells and Robin Ridley were picked for the over-45 team, Abbie Robertson for the over-65′s, Davy Rogan for the over-70′s and Sue Strachan for the over-40 and over-35 teams.
