The junior Club Championships were recently held at Nunholm Squash Club.
A healthy mix of juniors took part with some playing in a competition for the first time after only playing squash for a few months.
The age range of player started from 10 to the eldest at 15, but what everyone was keen to play for was to get a new name on the Championship trophy as Steven Wallace the holder was now too old to take part.
The prelim round saw both Adam Dowdell, Danny McBryde and Fraser Strachan win through to the main draw.
In those main draw games there were no real surprises with top seeds Iain Anderson and Douglas Brotherston easing through.
With the competition being run on the Monrad scoring system, all those taking part were playing for places which effectively meant they got at least three games on the day.
One of the most competitive games was for fifth/sixth place between Joe Martin and Ben McKiddie with Ben just squeezing it by three games to two.
The main draw semi finals put Iain Anderson up against 10-year-old Dean Brotherston, Dean worked really hard but Iain was just to strong and won through 3-0. In the other Douglas Brotherston had Adam Dowdall to contend with but Douglas being that little bit older and experience also won through to the final winning 3-0.
The semi finals played meant that the losers Dean and Adam played for third/fourth place. This was a cracking game with both boys working hard in the game which produced good rallies and excellent shot making.
Both boys took a game each to go 1-1 but Dean seemed to start making less mistakes than Adam at vital moments which led him to run out a 3-1 winner.
The final between Iain and Douglas was a repeat of the Secondary Schools competition in November where Iain was the victor then.
The match started off a little scrappy as both boys tried to settle. Douglas however struggled to get a good length in the game and started hitting too many tins with his drives. Iain was able to take advantage with consistent shots and basically waited on Douglas making the errors.
Iain went on to complete a 3-0 win and was warmly applauded by the watching gallery.
The winners’ and losers’ trophies were presented by Sue Strachan, the Nunholm Squash Club, chairman who thanked all the juniors for taking part and for their effort on the day.
