Progress continues for mens hockey team

24 10 2008

Dumfries travelled to play Uddingston full of confidence after a good victory the previous week. A strong squad of 12 were hoping to continue to their climb up the table. A new warm-up routine also saw the team ready to play from the start, which was something, which had been identified as a problem in previous weeks.

The team lined up in their favoured 3-4-3 formation and after a few minutes of pressure from Uddingston, Dumfries got a foothold in the game and started to work the ball well around the pitch. Read the rest of this entry »

An Ill Wind

21 10 2008

On Sunday afternoon a very large branch from one of the trees on the far side of the road north of the ground sheared off and landed on the cricket nets. It also landed on the electrical lines running alongside the road.

The damage to the recently built cricket nets is significant, as can be seen from the photographs. The tree landed on the end section nearest to the clubhouse and fractured and bent the supporting poles. Each of the three lanes has been damaged and that damage runs down the length of the nets with the structure bent and poles knocked out of place or their base in the concrete twisted.

The nets were only completed in the middle of last year thanks to grant support from Awards For All and the local council and were a significant project for the cricket section. It remains to be seen what steps will be needed to restore them to full operation.

Davy Douglas of Backswing views the new court 2 advertising

The newly refurbished Blue court 2 at Dumfries Sports Club now has a new tin sponsor. Backswing, the main agent for Karakal Rackets and Equipment for Dumfries and Galloway and operated by Davy Douglas, are now the principal advertisers on Court 2.

Davy, who is a long-standing member of the club and was heavily involved on the Nunholm Squash Club committee for many years as secretary, was delighted with the new court tin.

He said: “The continuing improvements of the courts are a credit to the hard work of the present squash club committee. The squash playing members of the club have given Backswing tremendous support over the years. So in return it is nice to be able to give something back to the club with sponsorship of the new Court 2 tin.” Read the rest of this entry »

First points secured for Dumfries in season opening match

17 10 2008

Dumfries mens hockey team welcomed GHK to the King George V Park on Saturday hoping to secure their first league points of the new season.

However, after a disappointing first half display saw the home side 2 – 0 down, a win seemed very unlikely but this was to be the proverbial game of two halves.

Losing centre forward Clark to a yellow card offence somehow triggered a quite astonishing turnaround of fortunes. Despite the temporary suspension, Campbell reduced the deficit following the penalty corner secured at the time of Clark’s dismissal. Read the rest of this entry »

Daniel Mckiddie, a pupil at Dumfries High School and member of Dumfries Tennis Club at Nunholm, triumphed recently at a tennis tournament in Carlisle. Daniel was taking part in the Festival of Tennis Tournament at Chatsworth Tennis Club in Carlisle.

He entered the U18 boys doubles with a partner from Windermere and they won this event comfortably. He then played in the U18 boys singles. His opponent in the final was the number one seed, who also happened to be the boy he had teamed up with for the doubles.

Daniel played an incredible match. In the first set he was down 1-5 and fought back brilliantly to take the set 7-6 after fighting off 11 set points. He then went on to take the second set 6-2. Read the rest of this entry »
