New seating arrangements

27 11 2008

There is a new look in the Sports Club’s suite with the addition of a set of chairs which have been generously donated to the club by Dumfries and Galloway College.

Following their move to the Crichton, the college left much of its equipment which it considered as surplus to requirements. And rather than throwing the equipment away, the college decided to donate it locally.

So thanks to the committee the Sports Club has benefitted as well as a number of other community groups, schools and clubs.

Squash: Wellsy wins the west

22 11 2008
Jimmy Wells West Masters Champion 08

Jimmy Wells West Masters Champion 08

Jimmy Wells, the present Nunholm Club Champion, with a fine example of attacking squash as ever, recently added the West of Scotland Masters title to the Stonehaven Masters which he won in September.

Jim had a troubled season last year with injuries but still managed to represent Scotland at the Home Internationals in May.

Nunholm has been represented at over 40/45/50/55/and even over 70s in the tournaments held in Autumn 2008. Sue Strachan managed a creditable runners up performance in the West of Scotland and Jim Scriven in particular was Wellsy’s biggest threat in the over 45s in Stonehaven.

Coming up for Dumfries and Galloway Squash players is the Dumfries and Galloway Closed Championships held at Nunholm over the week beginning December 1. Entry fee is £2. All entries should go to Jim Wells by November 23. Competitors don’t need to be international standard to play in this tournament, the more the merrier! The club is hoping for a good turn out from not only Nunholm but also Thornhill, Lockerbie and Castle Douglas clubs. Everyone will get at least two matches as all first round losers will be entered into a plate competition.

A high-flying Dumfries team travelled to Glasgow full of confidence after four wins in a row and clean sheets in their last two.

Dumfries started the sharper side and this paid off after 10 minutes, when they took the lead. Read the rest of this entry »

Nunholm Squash Club’s junior champion, Iain Anderson is heading north this weekend for a junior open graded competition.

The 16-year-old, who is also Dumfries and Galloway Secondary Schools Champion will compete against players from across the country at the Edinburgh event.

Dumfries hit Ayr for six

14 11 2008

After a three-week break, Dumfries were looking to continue the form that had seen them win their last two matches in the league and climb the table into fifth place.

It would be a tough test for the Dumfries side against an Ayr team that had not lost a game for one-and-a-half years and was currently sitting in third place in the table.

Dumfries took the lead after only five minutes. Read the rest of this entry »
