26 02 2009The Dumfries Tennis Club AGM will take place on Tuesday, 3rd March 2009 at 7.15 pm within the Farries Suite of Dumfries Sports Club, Nunholm Road, Dumfries.
The Committee would welcome as many Members as possible to be in attendance whether to help run the Tennis Section or just air your views.

Play Tennis in Dumfries this summer
26 02 2009Dumfries Tennis Club has 4 good condition artificial grass courts with floodlights. Tennis is played all year round. For those who prefer fair weather, the main tennis season is fast approaching and now is an ideal opportunity to join Dumfries Sports Club as the membership year runs from the beginning of March so why not join now.
Membership of the Sports Club gives access to tennis and other sports, namely squash, cricket, hockey, running as well as a fitness suite. Tennis coaching is available from the Club Coach, Colin Dunbar who runs group coaching and also provides individual lessons. He can be contacted on 01387 840391. Cricket: Alan debuts in Australia’s Sheffield Shield

Alan Davidson, Dumfries and New South Wales?
Dumfries Cricket Club’s Alan Davidson made his debut recently for New South Wales in Australia’s Sheffield Shield, albeit in a surprise fleeting appearance. A former member of the Scotland Under-19 squad, Alan is playing first grade cricket in Newcastle, Australia for the Wallsend club and had a weekend off when the local grade cricket was cancelled due to a first class match between NSW and Tasmania which was being played at the Newcastle Sports Ground.
At one point when NSW were fielding they found themselves with their 12th man already on the ground and another fielder coming off. Word went round that they needed another substitute fielder. Despite the presence of the local players, Alan leapt at the opportunity, apparently literally, and was running to the changing rooms to seize the day. Read the rest of this entry »

Tennis: Summer Leagues starting
23 02 2009The Tennis Summer Singles Box Leagues are starting in April.
To enter please add your name to the list on the tennis notice board or email your details to 
The Box League is open to Men and Ladies (any standard) who are member of the club and will be run over the summer months from April 2009 onwards.
The Leagues will consist of three or four players per league thus keeping the player commitment down to playing only two or three games per month.
The matches played each month are the best of two sets (tie-breaks in each). See here for rules, contact information and how to enter.

Squash: Nunholm players star in U-30’s in Castle Douglas

A healthy entry of young players from ALL Dumfries & Galloway Squash Clubs played over the course of Friday night and all day Saturday. Due to the system played all players involved were guaranteed at least 3 games as they battled for final places.
The first round provided no real shocks but Callum Wilson of SCSC had to battle back from being 8-4 down in the first game against 11 year old Dean Brotherston of Nunholm to sneak it 11-8 and to then go on and secure a 3-0 win.
The second round saw the 4 top seeds progress with probably Chris Bellwood of Nunholm being pushed hardest by club mate Iain Anderson. Chris just had the edge on consistency during the match to secure a win and a semi final spot.
The semi finals brought together the top 4 seeds, all from the Nunholm Club, with the first between Steven Wallace(1) against Chris Bellwood(3) and the second Chris McCutcheon(4) playing Jordan Currie(2). Read the rest of this entry »

Squash: Dean’s the Cisco Kid!

Dean joined fellow Cisco players Jordan Currie(19), Chris Bellwood(19), Chris McCutcheon(20) and Iain Anderson(16) (left to right in photo) in what is the youngest ever line up of players to play a league match.
Raymond Currie, team captain of Cisco said “Dean’s older brother Douglas is away on a school ski trip this week so we gave Dean a run out and he was be no means overawed and in fact pushed his opponent Grant McVinnie all the way and just went down 3-2! ”

Cricket gains DG accreditation
16 02 2009Dumfries Cricket Club is amongst the first local sports clubs who have qualified for the new Dumfries and Galloway Sports Club Accreditation Scheme. This scheme is administered by the local authority Leisure and Sport department and is about helping local clubs to be safe, effective and child friendly. The award has been largely due to the work put in by the club to attain the Cricket Scotland TopClub status which was achieved last year.
Junior convenor for the club, Rory Fergusson, commented that “Apart from promoting the work done by the club’s junior section this accreditation offers benefits to the cricket club, with funding support to increase our number of qualified coaches and access to local sports funding bodies. It will also strengthen our links with the Council’s Sports staff and help promote the junior cricket on offer at the club to the wider community.”
The weekly “Monday night is Junior night” will resume at Nunholm at the start of the cricket season. More details are available at www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk and meanwhile, despite the wintery weather, the club’s under-18s have been resolutely training outside at the club each Saturday morning since the middle of January.

Chairman’s Report – Feb 2009
16 02 2009Dear Member
Like many other clubs and associations the past year has been very challenging both financially and operationally. We have recorded a small operating loss which was not entirely unexpected given the economic climate but it is one that the management committee feel is manageable. Despite the spiralling energy prices the work we have undertaken during the last year will ensure we should not be crippled with the massive increases we have had to bear in the last two years. A major project to install a new heating system and introduce energy efficient lighting was completed successfully and we have already seen the benefits both from a cost as well as an operational perspective. I would like to thank in particular Keith Martin for managing this project so successfully. We have also been able to negotiate better deals with energy companies that have now came into effect and this will help us in the longer term. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 Cricket Club Dinner-Fri 27th Mar
11 02 2009The Annual Cricket Club Dinner is coming round again.
Casa Mia Restaurant, Friday 27th March 7pm start, £15 a ticket
Thanks to the large turnout last year the cricket section have been promoted to the main room at the Casa Mia. Another such turnout is hoped for with another good evening in prospect including the prestigious Dumfries CC Awards and some other less prized gongs being presented in the Club House after the meal.

Squash: Sunday night junior court bookings
11 02 2009Due to the demand for court time from the successful club junior sessions on a Sunday night 3 courts will be booked from 1900hrs to 2100hrs. The courts will be freed up for the free usage available from 6pm on weekend evenings depending on the junior numbers on the night. Thanks: The Squash Committee.

Squash: Last chance to enter DG U30 Champs
11 02 2009The cut off date for entries for the Dumfries & Galloway Under-30 Closed Squash Competiton is this Friday, the 13th February. The competition is being held at the SCSC Club in Castle Douglas on the weekend of the 21/22 February. However phone entries can be given to Raymond Currie of Nunholm Squash Club on 01387 257036 or 07515 994172. The draw will be made on Wednesday the 18th.
