Two play this coming weekend. Sue Strachan starts her matches in Dublin on Friday the 1st May in the Womens Over-35 category. Meanwhile Scotland’s number one, the redoubtable Davy Rogan, is in Nottingham on the same day to play in the Mens Over-70 internationals.
The following week Scottish Champion Jimmy Wells plays for the Scotland Over-45s in Edinburgh. Joining him in that team is Ronnie Carter from the Lockerbie Squash Club.
Also playing in Edinburgh that weekend is another Nunholm Scottish Champion, Robin Ridley, who is playing for the Scotland Over-50 team.
And Sue Strachan has yet a second tournament in Cardiff in a fortnight’s time for the Scottish Womens Over-45 team.
Good luck from the club in their matches.
The first eleven side beat Ferguslie by 99 runs. The seconds won by a wider margin of 155.
At Nunholm Dumfries opted to bat first but suffered early setbacks against the Ferguslie SNCL opening attack. Davie Davidson and Geary had revived the innings with a fifty partnership when Davidson was out caught for 38. Stuart Corbett-Byers and Geary carried on with another fifty partnership until Geary was bowled for a valuable 42. Then Byers fell LBW for 33 at the same score. Read the rest of this entry »
The Dumfries Sports Club and Dumfries Tennis Club is taking part in the new local Fit Mad initiative by offering those participating the chance to play Tennis on a Saturday morning.

The programme of classes run from Monday 27th April to Saturday 27th June and are open only to S1 & S2 girls and their mums from the Burgh Schools (Dumfries High School, Dumfries Academy, Maxwelltown High School, St Joseph’s College).”
More details on the initiative and how to join can be found on the Fit MAD website.
Tennis Coach Colin Dunbar is taking the Tennis Fit MAD sessions on Saturday mornings from 11am-12. Bookings are required and he can be contacted on 07762 624329.
A reminder that the squash summer leagues start next month. If you wish to be included you need to add your name to the list which is up on the squash leagues noticeboard in the clubhouse.
In weather that was more like the middle of summer than the first match of the season, youth triumphed over experience in Saturday’s Homecoming Match at Nunholm. It was a blast from the past as former players took the field again or watched from the boundary.
A young Dumfries XI batted first and thanks to a fifty from Chris Bellwood and runs from Russell Johnston (44), Alan Davidson (34) and a late order flourish from Tommy McBride (34no) they posted a challenging 219 for 4 from 40 overs.
Despite a remarkably hard wicket for April the Homecoming XI never got up with the required run rate. From 68 for 4, Davie Davidson with 66 and Campbell Potts with a hard hitting 61 not out took them closer with a century partnership but they finally fell short by 37 runs. Robert McBride was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 23.
The day, and the subsequent evening barbecue and band in the clubhouse, proved a great start to the 2009 season with plenty of cricket supporters and faces from the past welcomed to the club. That was thanks to Stuart Corbett-Byers’ hard work and organisation but also to Davie Davidson (and Raymond) for producing a hard track and a quick outfield in April and drawing compliments from all quarters on the state of the ground.
On Sunday Dumfries played Hillhead as a warm-up to their National League season. Another young Dumfries side came out on top with a 24 run win over the Western Union Division 1 side. Campbell Potts powered to his second fifty of the weekend and runs again came from Russell Johnston (38) and Davie Davidson (27) whilst wickets were shared between Jerry Goodin with three and two each to Drew Dawson and Alan Davidson.
Dumfries batted first and totalled a creditable 190 for 8 in the 40 overs. In reply Hillhead reached a threatening 98 for 1 after 22 overs. However three wickets fell rapidly and the innings then subsided to 166 all out with one over left.
Weekend Fixtures
This Sunday APD Dumfries play SNCL First Division side Ferguslie in a friendly at Nunholm. Ferguslie are expected to travel with a strong side to prepare for next week’s league fixtures. JMS Nunholm play a friendly away at Hawick in an echo of the club’s former time in the Border League.

The delayed Nunholm Squash Club Championship Plate Final was played this week and it turned out to be a cracker. It pitched Mike Service against Geoff Dean in what was a hard hitting and competitive encounter.
Geoff flew to a 6-0 lead in the first game before Mike clawed his way back to 6-8 but it was Geoff who got game ball first. However Geoff lost the point and Mike took the game to 9-9 and had game ball too before Geoff won service back and clinched the first 10-9. Read the rest of this entry »
