Squash: Under 30s squash competition

30 01 2010

The continued increase in younger players taking up squash with Dumfries and Galloway Squash Clubs will see many of them come together for the U-30 Dumfries and Galloway Closed Squash Tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 26 and 27.

The squash clubs, based at Nunholm in Dumfries, Stewartry Community Sports Club (SCSC) in Castle Douglas, Lockerbie and Thornhill, who all play in the popular John Henderson and Son sponsored Dumfries and Galloway Squash Leagues will all have younger players taking part in the competition which launched last year.

The competition will be open to any member of a Dumfries and Galloway Squash Club who is under 30 years of age and will take place this year at Dumfries Sports Club based at Nunholm.

Organiser Raymond Currie from Dumfries Squash Club said: “We are delighted to be the host club for the U-30 competition and we hope to see a healthy entry of younger players from across all the Dumfries and Galloway Clubs.

“We would also be delighted to see as many spectators as possible over the Friday night and the Saturday as there will be a good level of squash to watch.”

Raymond added: “I would like to express our thanks to our sponsors Wessex Park and Leisure Homes for trophies and prizes.”

Entry forms for the competition are available from all the clubs involved although they are also available directly from Raymond Currie, 01387 257036 for more details.

Squash: Dumfries win big at East Masters

26 01 2010

Dumfries Squash Club was well-represented at the East of Scotland Masters last weekend in Edinburgh and came away with five titles out of the 10 on offer.

The Dumfries winners included Sue Strachan in the O-35 ladies event and Faith Sinclair who won the O-50 ladies title, both repeating their successes and retaining the titles they secured at last November’s inaugural South of Scotland Masters in Dumfries.

In the men’s events Dumfries’ “old” boys Abbie Robertson and Davy Rogan again contested the O-70s final with Abbie repeating his success over Davy who finished runner-up.

In the O-45s current Scottish Champion Jimmy Wells was in excellent form and won the title with a brave performance in the final winning 3-2 over Chris Holt from the West.

In the O-50s current Scottish Champion Robin Ridley, playing his first Masters tournament of the season after returning from keyhole knee surgery, was also in fine form only dropping one set throughout the tournament to secure a 3-0 win in the final.

So once again, Dumfries Squash Club continues to push well above its weight on the Scottish Squash Masters national circuit. Any players interested in being a part of, or finding out more about, the success of the club can call in at Dumfries Sports Club at Nunholm or visit the website: www.dumfriessportsclub.co.uk

Squash: SOS Masters follow-up

20 01 2010

Dear Members,

Now that the tournament accounts have been finalised and the Festive season is well and truly over for another year, I thought I’d report back to you on our inaugural South of Scotland Masters Open Squash Championships.

In all measures the tournament was a big success and this was partially down to our sponsors. All the feedback to-date has been extremely positive and many participants were taken aback pleasantly with the homely-feel to our club and the tournament itself. At subsequent tournaments, several players who couldn’t make it to Dumfries indicated that they’d heard all about it and would be attending next year.

In economic terms, the tournament was a big success: Read the rest of this entry »

Skating at Nunholm

6 01 2010

Dancing on Ice arrives at Nunholm

Another sport has been added to the Sports Club portfolio with the arrival of skating at Nunholm.

The winter weather has resulted in some not insubstantial ‘rinks’ of ice which were taken advantage this week.

Yes, the cricket ground curator was in attendance and no, there was no skating on the square!
