Cricket: Alexander on Worcestershire radar

Niall in action at Nunholm this season

Niall Alexander of Dumfries Cricket Club has been impressing the coaching staff at County side Worcestershire over the past few months.

He was spotted by a scout whilst opening the bowling for Scotland U15s in England last season and had a successful trial in matches at Worcestershire at the end of last season.

During the winter the youngster has been working hard on the technical side of his game training with Scotland U17s under the supervision of Cricket Scotland Coach, Craig Wright.

Over the Easter holidays the sixteen year old was invited to play for the Worcestershire Academy side at a 3 day cricket festival hosted by Shrewsbury School. The county’s Academy side is used to identify, and develop the next generation of Worcestershire players.

Against Millfield School his six over spell brought 1 wicket for 11. Rain reduced the second match to a Twenty20 match which was won by the hosts, Shrewsbury School. Promoted to open the bowling against the previous winners Worksop College in the third game he took 2 wickets for 17 off 7 overs of pacy swing bowling.

As a result of his performances Academy Head Coach, Damian D’Oliveira has invited him to return to Worcestershire for further games over the coming summer. So the Nunholm player has more future outings for their Academy side in prospect.

Cricket: Runs for APD Dumfries in the Cup

APD Dumfries overcame Weirs, and the weather, to claim a resounding win in their Scottish Cup match on Saturday at Benfield Park Nunholm.

The Dumfries side amassed 318 for 5 wickets in their 50 overs with all the top five making scores with fifties by Scott Beveridge and Tom McBride and 47 to Chris Bellwood.

The Eco-genics Man of the Match went to Josh Geary who top scored with 76 and he was involved in a display of powerful hitting of the format’s new pink ball with fellow Aussie Joe Clarke, who scored 60 not out, that raised the total by a hundred in just the last 8 overs.

A prolonged rain interruption early in the Weirs reply threatened an abandoned match but the innings was reduced to 27 overs and they finished well short of a revised target, scoring 100 for 5. Dumfries play their second Scottish Cup group game next Saturday also at Nunholm when they face strong Edinburgh side Watsonians with their crop of past and present Scotland players.

Rusty top scorer for Nunholm

On Sunday CWE Nunholm beat Hillhead in a friendly after scoring 172 for 8 at Nunholm. ParkGate Man of the Match Russell Johnston was the mainstay scoring 66.

Hillhead reached 107 for 8 in reply after a fine opening spell of three wickets from Allan Maskrey. The 2nds start their competitive fixtures back at Hillhead on Saturday.

Also on Sunday, Tom McBride was picked for Western Warriors and was at the crease for their exciting last ball win in the Scottish Regional Series.

Dumfries Women’s training starts at Nunholm at 6pm this Friday. Newcomers to the sport are encouraged to come along. For more details about this, or about the junior or senior cricket at Nunholm, contact dumfriescricketclub@gmail.com or see www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk.
