Squash

Dumfries Squash Club was formed with the creation of Dumfries Sports Club in 1976 and is now the only squash club in Dumfries.

The club is affiliated with Scottish Squash and Racketball, West of Scotland Squash and is a member of Nithsdale Sports Council.

The club was recently awarded Sports Club Accreditation through Dumfries & Galloway Council.

Dumfries Squash Club Accredited Sports Club

There are four courts, all with viewing facilities.

The club has an on-going commitment to court maintenance in order to continue to provide excellent facilities for our members.

During the past 3 years, three of the four courts have been extensively refurbished. We are one of a few squash clubs in Scotland with a comprehensive on-site and on-line court booking system.

There are in-house monthly squash and racketball leagues which run throughout the year.

We also hold Club Championships (Open, Ladies and Junior), the Club Handicap Trophy, the Doubles tournament and Dumfries and Galloway Under-30 Championships. The club is the venue for the Dumfries and Galloway Closed Competition.

South of Scotland Masters

In November 2009 the club hosted the first South of Scotland Masters Open Squash Championships (a Scottish Squash Masters Circuit ranking tournament) and will continue to do so, and in 2007 was the venue for the Scottish Police Championships.

Several teams from the club participate in the Dumfries and Galloway Leagues.

We have strong representation in the Masters Tournaments throughout Scotland and several individuals represent Scotland in the Masters Home Internationals each year.

Juniors

Juniors are welcomed. They are the future of the club and the sport.

We have regular Junior Club Nights and coaching sessions during the winter on a Saturday night from 5-7pm.

These allow juniors of all abilities to meet and play others of a similar standard at squash or racketball. We offer free pool table use and juice between games to enhance the social aspect of this session.

Juniors also get the advantage of reduced court fees at off-peak times.

Schools: the courts are used by the local secondary schools for squash and racketball as a P.E. subject at off-peak times on specified weekday mornings and afternoons.

Free Squash

On Saturdays and Sundays from 6pm club members can play on any of the four courts for free! If you wish to guarantee your game it is recommended that you book for the token charge of 20p.

Squash Coaching

New for 2010 are the introduction of ad-hoc free coaching sessions by some of the club’s top players. Details of forthcoming sessions are found on the Club notice-board.

Squash doubles at Nunholm

In Dumfries, squash is a game played by all ages from 8-80 years. You can play at any level from complete beginners to national standard. All it takes is a racquet and a ball and a worthy opponent!

If you start slowly you can work your way up in standard or just play for fun and the exercise. There is nothing like 45 minutes of squash to get some good hard exercise in a short time. It fits easily into a busy life.

After your game have a shower and come up to the bar for a drink. You can watch others play from the balconies or take in a cricket match whilst you relax and are welcomed to the premier squash club in the South of Scotland.

Racketball

The courts at the club are also used for racketball. This is the UK version of the American game played with a shorter racket and a bouncier ball.

This is a fast growing sport in the UK and provides an alternative way of keeping fit and is particularly suitable for beginners and juniors starting out on a squash court.

Rackets and balls are currently available for use and can be signed out from behind the bar.

Monthly in-house racketball leagues were recently initiated and several of our members are qualified Racketball Leaders.

History

The squash club was initially formed as Nunholm Squash Club in 1976 commencing with 2 squash courts.

In 1987 two further courts were added.

In 2009 the club made the decison to change its name to Dumfries Squash Club.
