Issue 7 of the Squash Newletter has arrived. See below.

Dear Squash Players,

Welcome to the latest issue of the e-newsletter focussing on news and events in the squash section of Dumfries Sports Club. Inside this issue:

Summer Club Nights
Squash Coaching
Scottish Squash AGM
South of Scotland Masters
Squash Court Repairs
Doubles Tournament

Summer Club Night is on a Monday night from 6pm to 9pm and has been proving popular. Club Nights are for players of all standards and ages. All you need to do is turn up, sign in and wait your turn on court. Format is one game PAR to 15 and you’ll play 2 games before waiting your next turn on court. Cost is £1.50 per night; juniors – £0.75 per night.

Squash Coaching sessions for August (with Jimmy Wells and Jim Scriven) have been posted on the notice-board. These sessions have been proving popular and book-out quickly. Limited to 2 participants per session they are available on a first-come first-served basis. Watch out for future session dates on the notice-board.

Scottish Squash AGM – I attended the AGM on Monday 19th July to represent the Club. Highlights of the meeting included:

  • Scottish Squash has been renamed Scottish Squash and Racketball with a new logo.
  • Racketball will be promoted heavily commencing later this year as an “entry-level” to squash. The development plan also envisages the promotion of racketball as a means to attract new players (teenagers, women, senior players) to Clubs to increase their court utilisation. The development plan will be distributed to affiliated clubs in the next few months,
  • Refereeing courses are also being promoted – more on this once I receive information,
  • The new affiliation fee schedule will not benefit the Club, albeit there’s a one year amnesty providing for no raised fees for 2010/11, but with a significantly increased fee for 2011/12.
On behalf of the Club, I voted against the new affiliation fee resolution (the only one to do so!), and will continue discussions I had with John Dunlop, the new CEO and Ron Pearman, the President, to negotiate a fairer fee schedule for clubs which do not participate in their Regional leagues. More on this as my discussions progress.

South of Scotland (SoS) Masters – we have confirmation that our SoS Masters is on the Scottish Squash Masters circuit this season from 19th to 21st November. Hopefully no floods this year!

Squash Court Repairs – in keeping with our rolling maintenance programme, we are planning to replace the floor in Court 3, re-plaster its front wall and patch and paint the side and back walls. Preliminarily scheduled for the w/c 18th Oct, the Squash Club will be funding the majority of the costs with the balance of funds, subject to authorisation and approval, from the Sports Club Management Committee.

A re-run of the “Wacky Races” Doubles Tournament will be held on Sunday 29th August from 2-6pm. The sign-up sheet is now on the notice-board with a closing date of 22nd August.

Feedback – your comments and suggestions for future issues of the squash newsletter are actively sought and welcomed.
