APD Dumfries Captain for the new season, Stuart Corbett-Byers
This Saturday APD Dumfries take their first steps in the newly formed Scottish Championship when they play away at Fife side, Falkland, in their first league match of the season.
This season the Scottish National Leagues have gone from three divisions down to two. Dumfries who were the winners of a ten team Division 2 last year have moved into the Championship which now consists of fifteen teams after the expulsion of Edinburgh CC for ground problems. This sits below the Scottish Premiership which this season has sixteen teams.
Dumfries will be seeking to maintain their challenge at the top of the new league as they consistently managed to do in Division 2. However life will be testing with the side facing new opponents from the old Division 1; Poloc, Stenhousemuir, Penicuik and their opposition on Saturday, former league rivals Falkland.
Skipper Stuart Corbett-Byers said “We want to get off to a good start in the new league. We will need the same team spirit and attitude that the players had last year and for the more experienced players to play to their ability on Saturday”.
Dumfries can expect to face returning Sri Lankan professional, Cooray, who was, by a long way, Falkland’s top run scorer with 768 runs last season and was their second top wicket taker with his off-spin.
Also on Saturday, the Dumfries 2nd XI, Site Electrical Nunholm, will try to commence their league season with a home match against Whitehaugh after their first match in the West SNCL Reserve league against Langloan last Saturday was washed out when the only rain of recent weeks duly arrived at Nunholm.
On Sunday Brammer Dumfries play Glasgow Accies at Nunholm in West Sunday Division 2 and Dumfries U13s play Gala in a Scottish Cup match in the morning.
The club welcomes new senior and junior players. Senior training takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays and junior coaching is on Monday evenings. For details contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455 or see www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk .
The Tennis Dumfries & Galloway 2011 Men’s and Ladies Doubles leagues season commences on Wednesday 27th April.
The clubs agreed at the Tuesday 19th meeting to change the format for this season. Therefore the matches are now set-up for each player to play 3 matches per night, one match with each of his teammates. All matches will be the first to 8 games and if 7-7 is reached then a first to 7 points tie-break, with 2 points clear will be played.
This year sees Dumfries entering 3 Men’s teams and 2 Ladies teams, Dalbeattie with 1 Men’s team and 2 Ladies, Stewartry CSC (Castle Douglas) and Beechgrove (Moffat) both entering 1 Men’s and 1 Ladies team each.
The first fixtures of the season sees the Men’s defending Champions Dalbeattie play host to Dumfries B with Dumfries A at home to Beechgrove whilst Dumfries C start their season with a trip to Castle Douglas.
In the Ladies league defending champions Dalbeattie A travel to Dumfries B, Dalbeattie B entertain Stewartry CSC and Dumfries A travel up to Moffat to face Beechgrove.

First Matches of 2011
On Saturday APD Dumfries started the new cricket season off with a win in their friendly at Nunholm.
Chasing a Ferguslie total of 171 for 5 off 40 overs they eased past that with the loss of three wickets thanks to a not out 50 from Brammer Man of the Match Davie Davidson, 40 from Tom McBride and 26 from Andrew Batty. It was a contrasting tale of the top fours on Sunday when APD Dumfries travelled to play Premier League side Uddingston in another friendly.
The top four of Uddingston scored a hundred and eighty between them as they reached 231 for 9. The Dumfries top order had a difficult day and after being 14 for 4 the side only reached 114 with Robert McBride top scoring with 35.The bright note for the Nunholm side was the four wickets taken by 15 year old Niall Alexander who was the side’s Southwest Insulation Man of the Match.
Both he and Dumfries CC’s Chris McBride have been selected for the West Development team at Clydesdale this weekend.

Sponsors APD back Dumfries for the 2011 season
Prior to the first game of the season this weekend, Elliot Graham, of Newbie company APD Ltd, visited Nunholm, the home of Dumfries Cricket Club to hand over a cheque as sponsor of the Club and of the first eleven, APD Dumfries.
Dumfries Chairman, Rory Fergusson, said that “the support for the club from APD is now into its sixth year. This sustained support is very much appreciated and provides a base for the range of club activities, from juniors, ground improvements, through to success on the field which APD Dumfries amply demonstrated last year”.
Elliott Graham noted, “we were delighted that our support, since Dumfries were promoted to the National Leagues, helped the side claim the Division 2 title last year, especially after coming so close in previous seasons”.
The photograph at Nunholm shows Club Treasurer, Bob Murray, accepting a cheque from APD’s Elliott Graham with Trefor Williams (Junior Manager) left and Rory Fergusson (Chairman) right.
The season opener takes place this Saturday at Nunholm with APD Dumfries playing fellow Scottish Championship side Ferguslie in a competitive friendly. The visitors from Paisley upset a clean sweep by Dumfries in the league last year by causing their only defeat and then finished second behind the Nunholm side.
On Sunday, APD Dumfries will become reintroduced to the A74 again by travelling to play Premier League outfit Uddingston.
The club welcomes new players for the season ahead.
