Cricket: Davidson Fifty for APD Dumfries

5 06 2013

On Saturday APD Dumfries lost a close match against Drumpellier at Nunholm in the Western Premier League.

Alan Davidson and Drew Dawson put on a fine century opening stand for the Nunholm side but from there the complexion of the innings changed. A change of bowlers reduced the scoring rate and both openers were dismissed including Davidson, the Lakeland Fluid Power Man of the Match, for the top score of 55. That, a good catch, and an unfortunate run-out, put Dumfries at 133 for 4 with fifteen overs left.

Skipper Beveridge provided six boundaries in his score of 36 but the loss of wickets plus a couple of unnecessary dismissals meant the innings never regained the necessary momentum and the side were all out for 202 with three wickets for the professional Ramzan and four for Rawlinson.

On a previously sunny day a heavy rain interruption then intervened to reduce the Drumpellier innings to just 28 overs and a revised winning target of 150. Dumfries started well with Niall Alexander and Peter Lojszczyk each taking a wicket in their second overs.

Thereafter, in an innings with the tone of a 20/20 match, Drumpellier hit fours and sixes and each of the bowlers chipped away with wickets to keep the result in doubt.

However Dumfries did take enough wickets and the winning runs came with nine balls and three wickets left. McLaren was not out with a vital 48 not out. Dumfries next play Ayr on Saturday at Nunholm.

Also on Saturday Eco-Genics Nunholm lost their Western Premier Reserve League match away at Langloan. Marcus Richardson hit 58 in the Nunholm total of 179 for 9, and was the Access Mechanical Handling Man of the Match, and Jerry Goodin then took three wickets but Langloan hit the winning runs with five wickets and five overs left.

Junior Coaching: Monday night junior sessions take place at Dumfries Sports Club, Nunholm, from 6:15-8. For more details about Junior, Senior and Women’s cricket contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455, or the Club on 07799 856094, dumfriescricketclub@gmail.com.

Cricket: Bellwood strikes match-winning century

Six for Bellwood in his score of 141

Six for Bellwood in his score of 141

APD Dumfries won their Western Premier League match on Saturday with an assured 42 run victory over Renfrew at Nunholm.

That was largely due to a terrific century from Vice-Captain Chris Bellwood who amassed a score of 141, including 24 hit off one over, and who only perished, stumped, in the last over.

Aided by 68 from opener Drew Dawson, and their 169 run third wicket partnership, that led to a Dumfries total of 271 for 4.

In reply Renfrew were always under the pressure of runs. Niall Alexander took two important top order wickets, including that of professional Said for 24, the second wicket to fall.

Alan Davidson was the leading top wicket taker with three as Renfrew reached 229 for 8 and Bellwood contributed a further four catches behind the stumps to seal the Building Tec Man of the Match award.

APD Dumfries’s next league game is against Drumpellier at home on Saturday.

Dumfries 2nds, Eco-Genics Nunholm, lost out by three wickets in a low scoring encounter at Renfrew against Dean Park in the Western Premier Reserve League. Mark Irwin was the Andersons Kilts Nunholm Man of the Match with an aggressive 44 in a total of 127. The Nunholm bowlers made it a struggle with firstly, Jim Patterson taking two wickets, and conceding a mere eight runs, and then Jerry Goodin three before the opposition reached their target with seven wickets down.

On Sunday Dumfries won through to the final of the Murgitroyd Borders 20/20 with wins over Kelso and then St Boswells in the semi-final. At Kelso, Tom McBride and Chris Brockwell put on a century stand in an imposing total of 166. Kelso scored 130 in reply. It was a 63 run win at St Boswells as Dumfries totalled 145 with Campbell Potts the top scorer with 49. Scott Beveridge took nine wickets over the two games for the Dickies Bar Player of the Day.

Also on Sunday Dumfries Women lost their debut Women’s National League match at George Watsons. The Edinburgh side’s total of 181 for 3 proved too much to chase with Dumfries scoring a creditable 133 for 7 in their 30 overs.

Margaret Miller was the Parkdale Garage Player of the Match for her first fifty and Captain Sue Strachan added a valuable twenty one.

Cricket: Dumfries set for first home Premiership tussle

22 05 2013

On Saturday, at Nunholm, APD Dumfries play their first home Western Premier League fixture of the season against Renfrew.

The Renfrew side were promoted last year after winning the Western First Division. The sides have met regularly in previous seasons and the visitors will be looking to experienced professional, Ahmed Said, back for seventh season, and who already has an unbeaten century in the Scottish Cup this season. South African all-rounder Hendrickse, the visitor’s overseas amateur, will also want to make an impact after a rain affected start to the season.

Loz called up for the Reivers

With all last weekend’s games off due to the weather Dumfries will need to shake off the rust with skipper Scott Beveridge aiming to lead from the front and Scotland U19 pace bowler Niall Alexander having successfully shown his abilities in an extended spell in the Scottish Cup match at Heriots, which had to be restricted by the ECB Fast Bowling over limits for young bowlers.

Dumfries’s opening bowler, Peter Lojszczyk, played for the Border Reivers on Wednesday in their LiveSport.co.uk Pro Series win against the Highlanders at Ayr.

The Pro series provides a platform for the introduction of professional cricket at domestic level in Scotland and the future establishment of a first class structure.

Lojszczyk, who joined the Nunholm club at the start of the season, is the latest Scotland cap prospect who qualifies through the recently changed ICC’s parentage rule. Across from the Western Suburbs Club in New South Wales, Australia, he owes his chance to his mother, appropriately from Galashiels in the Borders.

Andy Tennant, performance director at Cricket Scotland, said: “Peter is someone who has just come on to our radar and we are keen to have a look. He would obviously qualify through parentage and hopefully he is someone who can add to our options.”

His Dumfries Captain, Beveridge, noted: “Peter just joined us this season but has already made a big impression. He is 6ft 6in and is a handful for batsmen with the bounce he gets.”

The second eleven, Eco-Genics Nunholm, travel to play Renfrew seconds, Dean Park and on Sunday Dumfries play at Kelso in the Murgitroyd Borders Twenty20 competition. The winners then play at St Boswells in the semi-final the same day. Dumfries has managed to win through to the National Finals each year, but with the exception of last season after a sodden bowl-off loss to Sunday’s opponents – Kelso.

Also on Sunday Dumfries Women have a re-arranged fixture away at George Watsons in the Women’s National League.

Junior Coaching: Monday night junior sessions take place at Dumfries Sports Club, Nunholm, from 6:15-8. These are aimed at juniors aged 8-14 and are open to those wanting to have fun learning a new sport, boys and girls, open to non-members, with a free try for first-timers.

Womens Cricket: The Club’s Womens’ and Secondary Girls training takes place on Fridays from 5 to 7.

However the Galloway Industrial Man of the Match, Robert McBride, batting at six, delivered the day’s top score.

He and Lojszczyk added over thirty, and with last man, Niall Alexander, added another twenty until McBride was caught for 57, to set a total of 161.

Heriots got off to a sixty run opening partnership and when they reached 106 for 2, with opener Knox nearing fifty, they were well placed.
