Newsletter from our Chairman

21 06 2020

Dear Members,
When I last wrote to you at the end of April I said it was important to keep members informed of what is happening at the Club and how we are preparing as we progress through the various phases as the restrictions ease regarding the coronavirus pandemic. In my last update I confirmed that all staff were furloughed and that the Club would ensure no staff were financially disadvantaged and that we would make up the 20% of wages not covered by the furlough arrangements. I am pleased to say that we have now taken our groundsman, Raymond, off furlough and he is now back to his former working arrangements. On the sporting front we have now opened two of the tennis courts with a third court due to open next week. The sessions have proved extremely popular and thanks go to The Tennis Committee for ensuring a smooth transition while adhering to the appropriate guidelines. It is also hoped that some form of cricket net practice could commence shortly and further guidance is expected soon. Playing squash though would still seem to be some time away with no likelihood of a return until phase four which could be around September at the earliest. As squash is classified as an indoor contact sport it will probably be one of the last sports to be considered for a return although everyone will be looking at how the introduction to full contact outdoor sport ie football, progresses when it returns shortly and if it is successful then it may speed up the introduction of other sports. Our Running and Hockey members are also curtailed during this period with no club activities likely for some time. On a more positive note we would hope that the Fitness Suite may reopen possibly in late July but will have restrictions placed upon its use and once we have more information we will let members know. Another positive is the possible opening of the bar facility for outdoor drinking. We are hoping that we will get the go ahead shortly for opening in early July and will confirm a date as soon as possible. In the first instance we plan to open only on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday and we are well advanced in our preparations and have made application to the local authority in good time for this to happen. Thanks go in particular to Andy Reed, Willie Martin and Gladys McClimont for the significant piece of work involved in progressing this. Membership subscriptions are constantly under discussion by the management committee but it is still too early to reach a determination until we know more about access to all our facilities. I would like to thank all members for their support and not least their patience during this difficult period but hopefully we are seeing some small signs of getting back to enjoying our sports once again.
Please continue to follow government guidance and stay safe.

Regards
John Glendinning (Chairman)

Squash & Gym News

26 09 2017
Please note the following;
Gym
We are renewing the flooring in the lounge area w/c 2nd Oct and as such we are having to store all the tables, chairs and table tennis table in the gym area. Therefore the gym will be closed on Tuesday 3rd, Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th. We apologies for the inconvenience this may cause.
Please also, note that the gym equipment should be getting sorted this week.
Squash Courts
Both the Squash club and the sports club management committee have agreed to remove the 20p courts during off-peak time on a Saturday and Sunday. Therefore from the 30th September all off-peak courts will rise to £1 per person. (please note court 4 is being changed over as I write this email)
We would also advise you that courts 1 & 2 are having some works done in October and that will mean both courts will be closed for 2 week. The works are scheduled to start w/c 23rd October, again apologies for the inconvenience but these works are necessary to keep our courts up to the standard that our members have come to expect over the years.
Best regards

The Silver Fern Horticultural Nunholm Person of the Match, Trevor Newport, took two wickets in their total of 268 for 6. Then after a good Nunholm start first change bowler Stafford proceeded to take seven wickets in just eight overs as the visitors were all out for sixty eight.

One of the five winners was Dumfries Cricket Club and for their involvement in the Dumfries entry on social media Amanda Creedon-Bass and Brogan Dean were presented with a certificate on the outfield after the first innings along with the Cricket Factory equipment prize won for the Club. The competition was held to celebrate the ICC Best Overall Development Programme Award that Cricket Scotland received last month with Cricket Scotland deciding to reinvest the award into equipment for schools and clubs to win as part of this competition.
