Dumfries Sports Club understands that 2020 was a tough year and 2021 continues to be that way. The Club committee would like to thank all the members who have continued to support our club, even when they couldn’t take part in their main activity at their club.

We are now at the point of asking members to renew their memberships for 2021 and appreciate that a number of you will be apprehensive about this as your sport may not be allowed as yet. So, if you want to play tennis then please renew as soon as you can, if you are still happy to support your club and keep paying your Standing Order or full fee, then thank you very very much. Everyone else, we hope to see you very soon.

Newsletter from our Chairman

21 06 2020

Dear Members,
When I last wrote to you at the end of April I said it was important to keep members informed of what is happening at the Club and how we are preparing as we progress through the various phases as the restrictions ease regarding the coronavirus pandemic. In my last update I confirmed that all staff were furloughed and that the Club would ensure no staff were financially disadvantaged and that we would make up the 20% of wages not covered by the furlough arrangements. I am pleased to say that we have now taken our groundsman, Raymond, off furlough and he is now back to his former working arrangements. On the sporting front we have now opened two of the tennis courts with a third court due to open next week. The sessions have proved extremely popular and thanks go to The Tennis Committee for ensuring a smooth transition while adhering to the appropriate guidelines. It is also hoped that some form of cricket net practice could commence shortly and further guidance is expected soon. Playing squash though would still seem to be some time away with no likelihood of a return until phase four which could be around September at the earliest. As squash is classified as an indoor contact sport it will probably be one of the last sports to be considered for a return although everyone will be looking at how the introduction to full contact outdoor sport ie football, progresses when it returns shortly and if it is successful then it may speed up the introduction of other sports. Our Running and Hockey members are also curtailed during this period with no club activities likely for some time. On a more positive note we would hope that the Fitness Suite may reopen possibly in late July but will have restrictions placed upon its use and once we have more information we will let members know. Another positive is the possible opening of the bar facility for outdoor drinking. We are hoping that we will get the go ahead shortly for opening in early July and will confirm a date as soon as possible. In the first instance we plan to open only on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday and we are well advanced in our preparations and have made application to the local authority in good time for this to happen. Thanks go in particular to Andy Reed, Willie Martin and Gladys McClimont for the significant piece of work involved in progressing this. Membership subscriptions are constantly under discussion by the management committee but it is still too early to reach a determination until we know more about access to all our facilities. I would like to thank all members for their support and not least their patience during this difficult period but hopefully we are seeing some small signs of getting back to enjoying our sports once again.
Please continue to follow government guidance and stay safe.

Regards
John Glendinning (Chairman)

Over the last few years we have welcomed many new members so please note the following;
Guests
Members are allowed to bring guests to the club for a drink, a game of squash or tennis, however, we ask that you please complete the visitors book which is located at the bottom of the stairs or behind the bar. Members are not allowed to bring guests to use the gym. Members are asked to restrict the same guest to no more that 3 games of either squash or tennis per year. Direct Debits/Standing Order
The Direct Debit payment option has been removed and replaced with Standing Order. This makes it easier for members to pay their subscriptions, unfortunately this means that those members are paying their fees in arrears. Therefore, should a member decide to cancel their payments before full payment has been received then the club will NOT automatically accept this member back the following year or beyond, the club may ask for the outstanding balance to be paid upfront before they are considered. These cases will be discussed by the Management Committee.
PLEASE NOTE, MEMBERS WHO FAIL TO COMPLETE THEIR MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL BY SUNDAY 17TH MARCH 2019 WILL HAVE THEIR KEY FOB DEACTIVATED.

Squash & Gym News

26 09 2017
Please note the following;
Gym
We are renewing the flooring in the lounge area w/c 2nd Oct and as such we are having to store all the tables, chairs and table tennis table in the gym area. Therefore the gym will be closed on Tuesday 3rd, Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th. We apologies for the inconvenience this may cause.
Please also, note that the gym equipment should be getting sorted this week.
Squash Courts
Both the Squash club and the sports club management committee have agreed to remove the 20p courts during off-peak time on a Saturday and Sunday. Therefore from the 30th September all off-peak courts will rise to £1 per person. (please note court 4 is being changed over as I write this email)
We would also advise you that courts 1 & 2 are having some works done in October and that will mean both courts will be closed for 2 week. The works are scheduled to start w/c 23rd October, again apologies for the inconvenience but these works are necessary to keep our courts up to the standard that our members have come to expect over the years.
Best regards
Dumfries Sports Club Committee

Urgent Sports Club News

19 09 2017

From September 2017 the club will be stopping the Direct Debit payment system due to issues with our bank. We would therefore ask all members that currently pay by this means make alternative arrangements to pay their membership fees for 2017/18.

The option would be to either set-up a Standing Order, this can be done using online banking or by completing the relevant form and dropping it into your bank.

Dumfries Sports Club Standing Order Form

Or you can arrange to complete the payment by handing in a cash sum, a cheque or pay by card at the bar for the balance. All enquiries to treasurer@dumfriessportsclub.co.uk

Individuals and teams of 5 people upwards are invited to join in. Amanda Creedon-Bass from the Sports Club said “The emphasis is on a fun few hours of activities which will give an opportunity to have a go at a variety of sports; netball, football, tennis, cricket, and hockey plus an obstacle course with prizes for the winning team and as importantly the best-dressed team. No experience is necessary, just bring your trainers and your friends.”

Sandra Proudfoot, Head of Delegation for the Special Olympics Team, said on behalf of Dumfries and Galloway Disability Sport that “it is great that the club are supporting us as a charity. We hope that the inspiration of the Rio Olympics and Team GB will inspire a few people to have a go and try some new activities. Appropriately the inspiration of the Paralympics for those we help will be starting in Rio the following Wednesday”.
