Cricket in prospect at Nunholm

The cricket season is rapidly approaching for Dumfries Cricket Club with players preparing for their first fixtures of the year which take place in a fortnight with two friendly games against Ferguslie on the 16th followed by an away match at Uddingston on the Sunday,

Dumfries seconds, Site Electrical Nunholm, play their first league match in the newly formed SNCL Reserve League, at home, the following Saturday. The firsts, APD Dumfries, travel to Falkland for their first encounter in the SNCL Championship, also new this season, the weekend after.

Training at Dumfries Cricket Club moves, from Saturdays, to weekday evenings next Tuesday, April 5th, from 6 until 8 at the Dumfries Sports Club, Nunholm, with an additional session on Fridays. Weekly training for the club’s junior and youth squads resumes the following Tuesday, April 12th, from 4-6pm. Junior cricket coaching for boys and girls starts in earnest after the Easter holidays on Mondays (25th April) 6:15-8pm and continues throughout the summer.

Cricket: McBride off to India with Scotland U19s

Scotland U19 opportunity for Dumfries CC's Tom McBride

Tom McBride, from Dumfries Cricket Club, is travelling to India next week to experience his second such pre-season tour. He is a member of the Scotland U19 squad who are spending two weeks near Delhi training and playing matches.

The Scotland side are preparing for the U19 World Cup Qualifiers which take place in Ireland in July. The team were unbeaten there last year in winning the European Championships.

They spend the first week training in sight of the Himalayas at the well appointed Cricket Academy in Dehradun north of Delhi and the second week playing matches in Chandigarh.

Craig Wright, ex-Scotland captain, and now the National Performance Development Manager is in charge of the squad. Wright commented that “the players will be concentrating on the plans for the team, match practice and preparation for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers. The squad will benefit from the great facilities over there.”

“Tom is an important member of the squad and has been working hard again over the winter. He continued to progress last year including his hundred for the U19s against Durham Academy along with good performances for his club.”





JM Barrie cricket clash for Peter Pan house

JM Barrie was a lifelong cricket fan and set up his own team

A celebrity cricket match is being arranged to raise funds to renovate a house which helped to inspire JM Barrie’s story of Peter Pan.

The match will be hosted by Nunholm Cricket Club in Dumfries on 7 June.

Barrie was a keen cricketer and formed his own team of literary friends, called the Allahakbarries.

The match will be used to raise funds for the overhaul of Moat Brae house in Dumfries where Barrie played as a child growing up.

Cricket: Dumfries train up for new season

Dumfries Skipper Byers has eyes on the Scottish Championship

Dumfries Cricket Club are starting their senior training sessions for the 2011 season this Saturday (the 12th Feb). The sessions are in the morning at the Dumfries Sports Club, Nunholm, from 10am to 12. Any new players interested in playing this season are very welcome and are invited to attend this Saturday or any future session. Weekday evening sessions will start in April.

This year it is all change in the Scottish and West leagues. Dumfries were crowned champions of National League Division 2 last year. However this season the top three leagues in Scotland have been reorganised into a 16 team Premiership and a 16 team Championship. Dumfries play their first game in the Championship, at Falkland, on April the 30th.

Title winning skipper Stuart Corbett-Byers is back to have a tilt at the Championship, “The team had a massive season last year and we are looking to train hard pre-season to put us in contention again at the top of the new Scottish Championship”.

The Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm, will be playing in a newly formed West SNCL Reserve League. This comprises the 2nd XI’s of the National League Clubs in the West. Nunholm’s first game is at home against Langloan on the 23rd April.

Membership week for the Dumfries Sports Club runs from Saturday 26th February through to Friday 4th March but member renewals can be made before this.

The Full adult membership has been retained at last year’s rate. The club have introduced Couple and Senior memberships offering discounted fees and have re-defined the qualifying age for Intermediate memberships.
