Cricket: Stafforce Dumfries beat East Kilbride

7 07 2014

In the Western Premier League on Saturday, Stafforce Dumfries had a convincing 92 run win over East Kilbride at Nunholm.

A Captain’s innings of 49 from the Roger Lever Photography Man of the Match, Stuart Corbett-Byers, was instrumental in Dumfries recovering from the loss of early wickets at 62 for 5. Important partnerships with Peter Lojszczyk, Chris Brockwell and Campbell Potts enabled Dumfries to reach 216 for 9 after the 50 overs.

In the Western Premier League on Saturday, Stafforce Dumfries faced an imposing total at Ayr when the league leaders set a score of 327 for 7 in the first innings. Opening bowler Niall Alexander took three of the wickets to fall.

Dumfries provided a good response thanks to a 177 run partnership between Chris Bellwood and Peter Lojszczyk. Bellwood reached his century but Lojszczyk fell nine runs short as did Dumfries when they finished on 269 for 7.

In the Western Premier Reserve League, Eco-Genics Nunholm had a good five wicket win against Ayr 2nds, Cambusdoon. Stuart Alexander took early wickets and finished with four as Cambusdoon were bowled out for 129. Gei Singh and Fraser Strachan each took three wickets.

Andy Reed then top scored with 44 to enable the target to be reached for five wickets down.

In the Sunday friendly against Dalton, Dave Strachan was the JB Houston Dumfries Man of the Match with his score of fifty two not out but his side finished shy by some thirty three runs.

On Saturday in the Western Premier League it was a last ball finish at Nunholm for Stafforce Dumfries in their game against Renfrew.

With seven wickets down they required two to tie, or three to win, off the last ball but managed to score just the one for a single run defeat.

Earlier Peter Lojszczyk and Niall Alexander with three wickets each had helped to keep the visitors in check in their first innings total of 218 for 9 after Renfrew had been 125 for 1 wicket.

Then a partnership between the Lakeland Fluid Power Dumfries Man of the Match Alan Davidson and Pat Druce set the Dumfries side on course when they reached a similar position of 129 for 1. However both batsmen were then out in quick succession for 58 and 48 respectively. Then against an increasing run rate Chris Bellwood nearly got the victory finishing on 50 not out after eleven runs were needed off the last over to win.

In the Western Premier Reserve league, Eco-Genics Nunholm registered a two wicket win at Deanpark. Stuart Alexander took three wickets as Deanpark were all out for 145. However Davie Davidson was the Creative Ceilings Man of the Match with four wickets and then the top score of 80 as Nunholm reached their winning total. This Saturday Dumfries travel to Ayr and Nunholm play Ayr 2nds at home.

Dumfries Women played a double header on Sunday and they also suffered a close defeat to Ayr in the Scottish Cup when they lost with two balls left. Kirsty Strachan was the Parkdale Garage Dumfries Player of the Match scoring 74 not out in the Dumfries total of 118 for 3. However Merli hit an unbeaten 52 not out for Ayr in reaching the target. In their second match Dumfries beat hosts Galloway in the National League after setting a total of 104 for 4 with Sue Strachan hitting 49 not out.

Cricket: Dumfries lose out to Uddingston

17 06 2014

On Saturday, in the Western Premier League, Stafforce Dumfries lost their away match at Uddingston despite a good bowling effort to restrict Uddingston in the first innings.

Uddingston were well placed at 89 for 2 at the half way mark after Gul top scored with 31. However, on that score, the Solway Offset Dumfries Man of the Match, Scott Beveridge, took two wickets in an over and Peter Lojszczyk claimed an lbw.

Thereafter the bowlers were able to restrict the batting side to 149 for 9 with Chris McCutcheon and Niall Alexander each taking two wickets.

However Dumfries lost three early wickets inside six overs and never really recovered. Chris Bellwood then hit 26 but became one of McKenzie’s five wickets. Chris Brockwell scored 23 to keep the run chase alive but the side were finally all out for 110 in the 35th over.

However those runs did prove enough as the Nunholm bowlers reduced the visitors to 38 for 6. Gei Singh took three of those wickets and Fraser Strachan dismissed top scorer McLeod with his first ball. Then Davie Davidson followed up with three more and Stuart Alexander finished with two as Nunholm were comfortable winners with Bothwell all out for 80.

On Sunday, Stafforce Dumfries overcame Ferguslie by two wickets in their CricHQ40 Cup quarter-final in a close finish at Nunholm.

Ferguslie were all out for 115 with Chris Brockwell taking three wickets and the Brazenall & Orr Dumfries Man of the Match, Chris McCutcheon, taking four for nineteen runs.

A second wicket partnership between Chris Bellwood and Dean Brotherston seemed to put Dumfries on the right course but wickets meant that Robert McBride and Stuart Corbett-Byers were required to take the score into the nineties.

Ferguslie professional Dabengwa then dismissed McBride for 29, one of his four wickets, and Corbett-Byers pulled a short delivery to long leg where an important catch was held. It required a tense ninth wicket partnership between Peter Lojszczyk and Stuart Alexander to nurse the side to a win and into the semi-final.

Sunday and Monday saw the concluding matches for the Scotland Reivers in the North Sea Pro Series, in the Netherlands against the Dutch Hurricanes. In two low scoring matches, Niall Alexander took three wickets in the Twenty20 and two in the 50 over match. Dumfries teammate Scott Beveridge took a wicket in each game as the Reivers lost the T20 and won the 50 over contest.

On Saturday, both league fixtures for the Dumfries sides were a victim of the rain and had to be abandoned. This Saturday, in the Western Premier League, fourth placed Dumfries are at Uddingston, who are in fifth spot, and Dumfries 2nds are at home against Bothwell.

On Tuesday, the Reivers and the Highlanders played each other in a second match at Nunholm this time in the North Sea Pro Series 50 over competition.

The Reivers were asked to bat first and with English and De Lange had achieved a solid start as they neared 90 for 1. However wickets fell to the Highlanders spinners, Watt and Leask to help reduce them to 115 for 6.

That brought Scotland player Haq out to join Dumfries’s Scott Beveridge. Together they mounted a recovery for the Reivers. In particular Beveridge batted well for his fifty and to end on 62 not out along with a very rapid 32 not out from Smith.

However the final total of 239 for 7 seemed not enough to challenge the Highlanders batting line-up and so it proved. Munsey got 44 opening and Parker finished on 57 not out. Leask again got runs and the Reivers were left to regret dropping an early change from him on the boundary. His performances with two wickets and a score of 64 won him the Good Man Home Improvements Man of the Match which was presented by the company’s Martin West.

Eighteen year old Dumfries player Niall Alexander bowled well for his one wicket and Beveridge dismissed the Scotland Captain Mommsen for 35 and had Leask caught but lost out to him for the Man of the Match award.

The win meant they were unbeaten in their five games played so far.

The Highlanders hit a record beating total of 283 for 7 in twenty overs with Scotland player, Michael Leask smashed his way to an astonishing score of 132 off just 58 balls to win the Atack Plumbing Man of the Match award. In the process he hit seven fours and twelve sixes in a boundary onslaught.

Fellow Scotland player Gordon Goudie was overshadowed when he hit 47 not out off just eleven balls as the Highlanders kept accelerating.

In reply the run pressure was too much for the Reivers. They lost four wickets in the first four overs including Dumfries player Scott Beveridge, who after launching one massive six, was caught hitting out at long off.

However another impressive innings of 81 not out from De Lange meant they reached a still respectable 164 for 7 in reply but that mammoth total had left them trailing in the Highlanders wake. Both Cricket Scotland sides had provided one of the best displays ever seen at Nunholm of clean hitting and top class fielding and catching.

The sides play again tomorrow (Tuesday) in the 50 over competition. The match starts at Dumfries Cricket Club, Nunholm, at 10:30am.
