Cricket: Primary cricket at Nunholm

Primary cricket teams raring to go at Nunholm

Local primary schools have not quite been hearing the smack of leather on willow this summer – more the thump of plastic on plastic.

Along with a team from Galloway and another from Lockerbie, pupils from Collin, Duncow, Georgetown and Noblehill Primary Schools came to Nunholm for a series of Kwik cricket matches between ten teams.

For four Friday evenings in June the teams bowled fast, threw hard and hit big as five games took place simultaneously on the ground. In all there were over sixty young participants who enjoyed their time with bat and ball.

The Collin “A-Team” proved to be the champions – being undefeated in their 8 matches.

There was plenty of enthusiasm and no little skill on show and hopefully some of the primary pupils will have been enthused enough to return to Nunholm for some of the Dumfries Cricket Club weekly junior coaching sessions – which carry on through the summer holidays – on Mondays from 6.15-8pm.

Thanks go to the volunteers who umpired and organised the matches and the teachers and team managers for marshalling their sides.

Cricket: Dumfries’s juniors in action

10 06 2009

The DG U13 Cricket League had a top two clash at Nunholm last Sunday when the two sides from the West of the region played out for top spot. The match report can be read here.

This year there is a new initiative for youth cricket in the West with a Western Regional Academy team playing in Western Union Division 1. They play each team, away, once just as the Scotland Under-19s do in the National Premier League.

Gatehouse of Fleet played host to Sunday’s match against Galloway. The club’s Thomas McBride, the WCA captain, top scored for his side with a fifty. The match report for that game can be found here.

Cricket: Runs and wickets for the club’s juniors

3 06 2009

Dumfries and Galloway Under 17s won against Gatehouse CC on Sunday in a warm-up match for upcoming area matches.

Gatehouse batted first and Sachin set the standards with a fine display of stroke-making with 80 in a total of 183 all out, but the fielding and bowling was equally impressive. The wickets were shared around with Anthony Hulatt the only bowler to take 2 wickets. The pick of the bowlers was Chris Edgar who only conceded 9 runs from his 8 overs.

Douglas Brotherstone (59) and Adam Elliot (37) both played entertaining innings and made sure that the four wicket victory was achieved. However it was Robbie Carson who steered the side home with an efficient unbeaten knock of 17 no.

In the DG U13 League Dumfries Cowboys beat Langholm/Lockerbie Lightning in a high scoring game at Nunholm. Niall Alexander scored an unbeaten fifty in the 152 for 4 and Douglas Hubbert took three wickets as the Langholm side fell 39 runs short. Callum Bell and James Cook both took 2 wickets for the visitors while Stuart Murray scored 22 no.

At Langholm where Langholm Lightning took on Dumfries Injuns runs were harder but the game was just as hard-fought. The Dumfries side batted first and the Langholm team must have fancied chasing the 63 runs total. However some very good bowling proved too much and they had to settle for 49 all out. Connor Bowie, Chris McBride and Todd Rafferty took 3 wickets apiece.

Cricket: Byers blitzes Boswells

Byo keeping his sponsors, the Nunholm Card School, entertained.

Stuart Corbett-Byers provided a run feast in APD Dumfries’s ten wicket win over St Boswells in the Scottish 20/20 Cup on Sunday.

Chasing a total of 93 he amassed a score of 78 not out in just 12 overs. The die was cast for St Boswells when he hit the first over for 18.

Thereafter they failed to subdue him as he sent spectators diving for covers with a spate of sizes and fours.

However St Boswells could claim the sixes of the day with two being launched out of the ground, over the Nunholm road and disturbing the Sunday diners at the Casa Mia.

Despite that Dumfries contained their innings to below five an over on a good wicket with both Robert McBride and Jerry Goodin taking two wickets apiece.

This followed on from nearly another ten wicket win at Nunholm over Renfrew in National League Division 2. Read the rest of this entry »

Squash for the 2016 Olympics

The Squash Open Day at Nunholm takes place this Saturday, the 23rd May, from 12 noon to 5pm.

This takes place on World Squash Day and marks the world-wide campaign to get squash included in the 2016 Olympics.

It is free squash and racketball for all and exhibition matches involving the club’s Scottish Masters Internationalists start at 2pm.

A 3 man team competition will run throughout the afternoon. Registration is at the club at 12 noon. Entry is free.

The aim for the day is to give those who have not tried squash an opportunity to have a go. Specifically it is open to non Sports Club members! Eye protection for junior players and rackets will be available along with some refreshments.

May the 23rd is World Squash Day and for this year is rebranded as Squash 2016 Day to support the Olympic bid. More information is available on the official website squash2016.info and there is an opportunity for squash players to get involved on www.worldsquashday.com.

The Olympic initiative is backed by Scot Peter Nicol, former World no 1, “If I’d been given the opportunity, I would have been there. My four Commonwealth Games gold medals were my best achievements as a squash player. So I can only imagine what it would be like to be an Olympian, it would be the highest honour in the squash world.”

Thomas McBride from Dumfries Cricket Club was selected yesterday for Scotland U19s in their match against Durham Academy at Uddingston.

He bowled well to claim two wickets.  He and Willie Rowan, formerly of Prestwick and now Greenock CC, were the sole representatives from the Western Region in the XI.

Congratulations from the Sports Club on adding to the Scotland representatives across the various sections who ply their sport at Nunholm.

Tennis: Double victory for Sophie

9 05 2009

SOPHIE ROBINSON of Dumfries Sports club has tasted great success in the north of England, plundering titles in Middlesborough and Newcastle over the last two weekends.

Sophie won the U14 title in Middlesborough over Easter without dropping a set and also was unbeaten in the Newcastle matchplay again without dropping a set.

On both fronts Sophie defeated girls a year older than herself and has now moved her rating up.

A regular in all the county teams, Sophie had been regularly playing the top juniors in Scotland with wins over all at certain times to replenish an ever-expanding trophy cabinet.

Tennis in Dumfriesshire is booming at present and kids from this region are making a good impression in tournaments afar. Alex Shearman of Lochmaben and Daniel McKiddie of Dumfries have also been playing regular county level tennis and there are numerous other emerging talents.
