Tennis: Duncan in County Team

8 05 2009

Duncan Muir of Closeburn, a member of Dumfries Sports Club, has been selected to play for the South of Scotland county team at the forthcoming County Cup.

Duncan, a relative latecomer to tennis, has impressed with his development and attitude on court to make a rapid rise in the ranks.

Winner of the Dumfriesshire U14 title, Duncan has been playing competitions all over Scotland and the north of England with an ever rising success rate and was recently a finalist in the Chatsworth Easter tournament in Carlisle.

Cricket: APD Dumfries win National League Opener

Davie Davidson scores the 1st league 50 of the season

Davie Davidson scores the 1st league 50 of the season

Playing Weirs on Saturday at Nunholm, APD Dumfries won their first league match of the season by a healthy 84 runs in National League Division 2.

The Dumfries side put up 217 batting first with the first league fifty being scored by opener Davie Davidson. His 58 and 41 from Geary at number 4 were the backbone of the innings and when Davidson was caught at 142, 12 overs and seven wickets were left.

Wickets then fell as the scoring rate rose with Dawson adding a useful 21. Those final overs contributed about six an over for the Doonhamers to reach 217 for 9 after 50 overs.

Despite losing Alexander to injury after bowling only three overs, Jim Patterson and then Geary put pressure on the Weirs batting. Each took a wicket to restrict the total to 19 off ten. Two more catches off Geary and one in left-armer Beveridge’s first over meant five wickets down for below fifty.

Spinners Beveridge and Goodin then gradually mopped up the innings. Skipper Beveridge finished with two wickets and Goodin four as the run chase ended well short on 133. Next Saturday Dumfries play away at SMRH. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: D&G Coach position

1 04 2009

A Community Cricket Coach is being sought for the Dumfries and Galloway region.

The post, which is with Cricket Scotland and in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Council, has the objective of building on the cricket already played in the region. The focus is on developing junior cricket and involving more youngsters in the sport by linking more schools with clubs.

Last year in Scotland, 18000 children were introduced to the sport by primary school teachers, a 10% rise on the previous year. A number of these were in Dumfries and Galloway but the aim is to increase that involvement in sport. With new Regional Cricket Academies in place across Scotland the route is also there to achieve regional and national selection. Partly as a result of these initiatives Cricket Scotland recently was awarded the International Cricket Council (Europe) award for best overall cricket development programme.

This part-time position with Cricket Scotland is located at the Sports Development Team at DG One. It has been made possible through the efforts of the DG Cricket Development Group, local clubs, and with the support of local community funding. More details on the role can be found at www.dgcricket.org.uk.

Squash Club Finals this Fri/Sat/Sun

17 03 2009

This weekend at Dumfries Sports Club will see the final matches of the Club Championship, Jim Thorburn Trophy and Junior Club Championship all played on a Finals Day on Sunday 22nd March. All club members are urged to come and support the finals weekend on what should be a great advert for squash for our area.

The Junior event will start play on Saturday afternoon where there will be a healthy number of the club’s junior players on show and it will climax with the junior final taking place on the Sunday.

The favourite will be defending Champion Iain Anderson but he is sure to be pushed all the way by last years runner up Douglas Brotherston.

In the main Club Championship event, the semi-finals will take place on Friday night at 7pm with Malcolm McCubbin taking on new Scottish Masters over 45 Champion Jimmy Wells in the first semi. This will be followed by Les Harkness who will look to overcome the new Scottish Masters over 50 Champion Robin Ridley. Two cracking matches are in prospect and a good turnout of spectators is expected.

In the Jim Thorburn trophy, the popular handicap competition, young Iain Anderson takes on the hard hitting Davy Lindsay in the first semi final at 7:15pm. This will be a tough one for Davy as he has a big handicap to turn around so expect a tight game here. The other semi sees Lister McKiddie forget the tennis court for a bit to face hotelier Phil Leek. Phil too has an advantage on the handicap so it will be a stern test for Lister.

Presentation of prizes will follow in the main lounge after ALL finals with Chair of the Squash Committee Sue Strachan.
