Last weekend saw the new Dumfries & Galloway U-30 Squash competition sponsored by Jas. P Wilson and Backswing played at the courts of Stewartry Community Sports Club in Castle Douglas.

A healthy entry of young players from ALL Dumfries & Galloway Squash Clubs played over the course of Friday night and all day Saturday. Due to the system played all players involved were guaranteed at least 3 games as they battled for final places.

The first round provided no real shocks but Callum Wilson of SCSC had to battle back from being 8-4 down in the first game against 11 year old Dean Brotherston of Nunholm to sneak it 11-8 and to then go on and secure a 3-0 win.

The second round saw the 4 top seeds progress with probably Chris Bellwood of Nunholm being pushed hardest by club mate Iain Anderson. Chris just had the edge on consistency during the match to secure a win and a semi final spot.

The semi finals brought together the top 4 seeds, all from the Nunholm Club, with the first between Steven Wallace(1) against Chris Bellwood(3) and the second Chris McCutcheon(4) playing Jordan Currie(2). Read the rest of this entry »

'Cisco Kids' - the youngest ever league line-up

Eleven year old Dean Brotherston became the youngest ever player to play for a squash team in the John Henderson & Son sponsored Dumfries & Galloway Squash leagues this week.

Dean joined fellow Cisco players Jordan Currie(19), Chris Bellwood(19), Chris McCutcheon(20) and Iain Anderson(16) (left to right in photo) in what is the youngest ever line up of players to play a league match.

Raymond Currie, team captain of Cisco said “Dean’s older brother Douglas is away on a school ski trip this week so we gave Dean a run out and he was be no means overawed and in fact pushed his opponent Grant McVinnie all the way and just went down 3-2! ”

Cricket gains DG accreditation

16 02 2009

Dumfries Cricket Club is amongst the first local sports clubs who have qualified for the new Dumfries and Galloway Sports Club Accreditation Scheme. This scheme is administered by the local authority Leisure and Sport department and is about helping local clubs to be safe, effective and child friendly. The award has been largely due to the work put in by the club to attain the Cricket Scotland TopClub status which was achieved last year.

Junior convenor for the club, Rory Fergusson, commented that “Apart from promoting the work done by the club’s junior section this accreditation offers benefits to the cricket club, with funding support to increase our number of qualified coaches and access to local sports funding bodies. It will also strengthen our links with the Council’s Sports staff and help promote the junior cricket on offer at the club to the wider community.”

The weekly “Monday night is Junior night” will resume at Nunholm at the start of the cricket season. More details are available at www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk and meanwhile, despite the wintery weather, the club’s under-18s have been resolutely training outside at the club each Saturday morning since the middle of January.

New Competition for Dumfries & Galloway Squash

13 01 2009

An increase in younger players taking up squash with our Dumfries & Galloway Squash Clubs has seen the 4 main clubs come together to organise a new Regional Competition.

The Squash clubs based at Nunholm in Dumfries, Stewartry Community Sports Club (SCSC) in Castle Douglas, Lockerbie and Thornhill who all play in the popular John Henderson & Son sponsored Dumfries & Galloway Squash Leagues are launching a new Under 30 Squash Competition which will take place over the weekend of 21st/22nd February 2009.

The competition will be open to any member of a Dumfries & Galloway Squash Club who is under 30 years of age and will take place this year at SCSC in Castle Douglas. The Castle Douglas based club has probably seen the biggest increase of new younger players as the club has greatly improved its courts and facilities over the last 18 months.

Colin Davies from SCSC said “We are delighted to be the host club for this new competition and we hope to see a healthy entry of younger players from across all the Dumfries & Galloway Clubs. We would also be delighted to see as many spectators as possible over the weekend too as there will be a good level of squash to watch.”

Fellow organiser Raymond Currie from Nunholm added “The organisation of the competition has come together quite quickly as all the clubs have shown a keen interest in getting it off the ground. I would however like to express our thanks to our sponsors Jas P Wilson & Davy Douglas of Backswing for trophies and prizes.”

Entry forms for the competition are available from all the clubs involved although they are also available directly from Raymond Currie, telephone 01387 257036 for more details.

They are also available online here – 2009 U30 D&G Closed Entry Form (in PDF/Adobe format). The closing date is the end of Friday 13th February and the draw will be sent to the respective clubs by the 18th Feb. The early entrants get the t-shirt, literally.
