Cricket: Dumfries Women competitive at Peebles

27 11 2012

Holders Dumfries Women took third place at the Cricket Scotland Womens indoor 6-a-side tournament at Peebles on Sunday with a comprehensive win over Edinburgh University in their play-off match.

The side  won both their group games with Ally McCubbin hitting a crucial six in a close one wicket win over St Boswells and Kirsty Strachan top scoring with a not out fifty, including a remarkable five sixes in one over, to defeat Edinburgh Ladies.

In the semi-final the side lost with two balls and two wickets left as eventual tournament winners Galloway successfully passed a challenging total of 56. The team then produced their best performance with a five wicket win against Edinburgh University chasing down a target of 41 in just two overs.

Kirsty Strachan was Dumfries’s top scorer with over a hundred runs for one dismissal and she and Rachel Howard and Rosy Ryan bowled well handling the opening overs. Captain Sue Strachan chipped in with three wickets, including being on a hat-trick, and debutant youngster Kelsey Patterson starred taking two wickets, both bowled.

The Parkdale Garage Dumfries Player of the Tournament was Rosy Ryan as top wicket taker with a wicket in each of her four overs plus hitting 72 runs opening the batting with Strachan. Cricket: Scotland Womens Tour for Strachan

6 11 2012

Dumfries cricketer Kirsty Strachan is excited about an invitation to play in an international tournament in Dubai next year.

Kirsty, who plays for the Dumfries CC Women’s team, has been picked in a Scotland Womens Development squad to play in an MCC invitational tournament in Dubai in February.

She, along with the rest of the squad, is hard at work fundraising to help raise £15,000, which will enable the Scotland side to compete, with the prospect of matches against leading English counties such as Lancashire and Durham, along with Wales and an MCC side.

“It is a great opportunity for the players and for the Womens’ game in Scotland. So the team would welcome any sponsors and supporters for the side and players who can help make the trip happen.” Fundraising is being co-ordinated online through www.tinyurl.com/WildcatsDubai.

Although the squad will predominately be under 19, four over-age players are able to participate and will offer guidance as the next generation of players gain valuable experience in a new environment for most of them. [Cricket Scotland: Scotland Wildcats Development Squad to UAE]

Tennis: November Leagues

2 11 2012

Dumfries Tennis Club singles box leagues are now supported with the LTA’s software program.

The new league set-up will allow all players to check out what other players are doing with regards to results. The ability to check how a player has performed in previous months is also an option that players can use.

The club is keen to push this further and hopefully add the junior leagues into the same format early next year and possibly have the club league matches counting towards the LTA ranking points.

Check the link to see what’s happening.
