Dumfries CC Award Winners for 2010

Scotland U19 batsman Tom McBride was named as the 1st XI Player of the Year at the Dumfries Cricket Club Awards Dinner last Saturday. The eighteen year old opener won as a result of being the side’s top run scorer in the league with 547 runs including two centuries, plus a score of 95, and he was the top home grown run scorer in National Division 2.

He came to the fore this season as part of a batting line-up that scored the most runs in the Division and was instrumental in APD Dumfries winning a National League title for the first time.

The award for the Club’s best bowling performance (the Jimmy Steele Trophy) went to his teammate Jerry Goodin for a 5 wicket haul for 35 with his leg-spin against Weirs in a National League match at Nunholm and which contributed to him ending up as the equal second top wicket taker for the side with 21 wickets. The Player’s Player of the Year for the second year running was given by his fellow players to Australian Josh Geary for his 1st XI performances with bat and ball and his team contribution. He was the second top run scorer with an average of 49 and was the top wicket taker with 24 wickets.

The 2nd XI Player of the Year was presented to opener Hugh Farries as the side’s top run scorer in Western Union Division 2 with 525 runs which helped his team to finished fourth in the league. Cameron Telfer was awarded the Dumfries CC’s Young Player of the Year for his wicket taking exploits for the seconds where he was the third top wicket taker and with the best strike rate thanks to his regular habit of immediately taking a wicket when brought on to bowl. Tennis: Dumfries secure Division 4 title

18 10 2010

Despite losing the final match to Clarkston, Dumfries had done enough by winning their previous three matches to secure the title.

In the previous match Dumfries faced a tricky tie as they travelled to Queens Park (Glasgow) who still had an outside chance of winning the league.

After winning the first match 6-2, 6-0 Dumfries lost their second match 4-6, 6-1, and 10-8 which was their first loss in the league. However this proved to be a small blip as Dumfries powered home with two more wins in the singles 7-6, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-4 which was then followed by two victories in the doubles 7-5, 6-0 and 6-4, 5-7 & 10-5.

With the league title almost secured, Sunday’s trip to Clarkston proved to be an anti-climax as an under strength Dumfries team suffered it’s only defeat of the league campaign. However with convincing wins in their previous three matches it would have taken a whitewash from Clarkston to overturn the Dumfries team’s advantage.

The match itself was evenly contested as both teams recorded two singles victories each and one doubles win each. This had the match tied at 6 points each and therefore a tiebreak shoot-out had to be completed to determine the match winner. Dumfries started the stronger winning the first shoot-out and with a match point in the second game could have sealed the victory but unfortunately they couldn’t convert the opportunity and eventually lost the shoot-out 2-1 which handed the match to Clarkston.

Dumfries can now look forward to next years challenge in Division 3.

13 10 2010

Stuart Corbett-Byers and Jim Patterson - back to lead Dumfries in 2011

He and Vice-Captain, Jim Patterson, face the challenge of a reorganised league next year. The three ten team divisions of this year have been restructured into two National divisions of sixteen, the SNCL Premiership and the Championship. This means that Dumfries will be facing the likes of Poloc and Stenhousemuir in the Championship next season.

Also continuing as 2nd XI Captain and Vice-Captain are Stuart Alexander and Davie Davidson with the side again playing in Western Union Division 2 after the Nunholm side finished fourth.

Chairman Rory Fergusson said “The club are fortunate to have such a wealth of experience leading both league sides. We are hopeful that the firsts can maintain their form next season and mount a challenge for the first Scottish Championship title and that the seconds continue the development of the club’s younger players”.

The presentation of the season’s Club Awards takes place this Saturday at Nunholm after the Annual Dinner with guest speaker Sandy Strang on hand to mark the club’s most successful year ever. More information on playing for the club can be found at www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk.

Squash: Doubles Tournament

11 10 2010

The annual squash doubles tournament once again attracted a good turn-out of 8 pairs. The draw thus consisted of two groups of 4 pairs based on a round-robin format.

The winners of the first group were Chris McCutcheon and Raymond Currie with Jimmy Wells and Steven Forsyth finishing as runners-up. In the second group Garry McKean and Danny McBryde finished runners-up to Keith Gristwood and Peter Allen.

The semi-finals saw the winners of each group take on the runners-up with McCutcheon and Currie defeating McKean and McBryde, and Wells and Forsyth beating Gristwood and Allen.

The final promised to be a close-run contest and it lived up to its pre-match billing. The old pro Jimmy Wells kept his team in the match and levelled the score at one set-all, setting up the decider. The final game was very tight with neither side gaining any clear advantage and it went close right to the very end. It reached 14-14 with either side then requiring a 2 point lead to claim victory. Finally at 17-15 McCutcheon and Currie edged it to lift the trophy.

Squash: Junior Club Championship

11 10 2010

The junior club tournament attracted 6 entries and was played in a round-robin format. After 4 rounds of matches, the last two remaining unbeaten players were Dean Brotherston and Danny McBryde. The result of their head-to-head match would thus decide the title.

In a close first game Brotherston came out on top and further extended his advantage by taking the second game. McBryde put in more effort in the third game but came up short against an in-form Brotherston who won the third game and the match to lift the Junior Champion Cup.
