Cricket: Two 9 wicket wins for Dumfries

28 07 2015

In the Western Premier League on Saturday, Stafforce Recruitment Dumfries dominated their home fixture against Renfrew.

Dumfries bowled first and Niall Alexander immediately put the Nunholm side on the front foot with two wickets in the first two balls of the match. Pat Druce followed up with a further two wickets and the Annandale Insurance Man of the Match Alan Davidson finished off any possible recovery with 4 wickets for just 6 runs as Renfrew were dismissed for 51. Chris Bellwood and Scott Beveridge chipped in with a wicket apiece. Three times during the innings was a bowler on a hat-trick – Niall Alexander once and Alan Davidson twice.

In reply Drew Dawson hit 23 not out, and Stuart Corbett-Byers was run out for 17, as Dumfries won at a canter by nine wickets in only the ninth over.

In the Western Premier Reserve League it was perhaps even more one sided for Nunholm away at Renfrew 2nds, Deanpark. Stuart Alexander also took 4 wickets, for 9 runs, and Fraser Strachan removed two to help dismiss Deanpark for just 35. It was another nine wicket win for a Dumfries side, this time in the tenth over, when skipper Andy Reed then lead the way home with 23 not out. Alexander was the Jardine Funeral Directors Man of the Match for Nunholm.

Dumfries’s Chris McBride followed up his 87 against Scotland U17s with another score in the eighties for Cumbria U17s last week, hitting 85 against Lincolnshire in their ECB Championship two day match which was again dominated by the Cumbria side.

Dumfries Cricket Club raising funds for Nepal Earthquake

26 07 2015

Dumfries Cricket Club is raising funds for the Nepal Earthquake.

The club is joining cricket clubs across Scotland in a fundraising drive for Nepal this weekend.

Players at Saturday’s match at Nunholm will be asked to donate an extra £1 for their mid-match tea this weekend for the DEC Nepal Earthquake Appeal as part of “Teas for Nepal”.

“Teas for Nepal” - Josh for the 1sts and Andy for the 2nds start off the Nepal Earthquake donations at Dumfries Cricket Club.

The Nepalese cricket team arrived in Scotland this week to play the Scottish men’s national team in two ICC World Cricket League matches. To mark this occasion, Cricket Scotland has asked local clubs, including Dumfries Cricket Club, to help raise funds for a fellow cricketing nation.

As well as asking members and spectators to put a ‘pound in the teapot’, Dumfries Cricket Club will also be selling raffle tickets to raise money for the appeal.

Scottish cricket has attracted celebrity support due to its commitment to help efforts in Nepal. Joanna Lumley, who spearheaded the campaign for the Nepalese Gurkhas’ entitlement to UK citizenship, has praised the ‘golden-hearted’ cricket players of Scotland.

She also has a Dumfries and Nunholm connection through her involvement with the Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust for whom the Club hosted a charity cricket match in 2012.

Joanna Lumley said: “These are going to be gripping matches by any standards: the hill men of Nepal against the hill men of Scotland, a pitch looming between, bails in place, the stumps trembling in anticipation of the battle of the warriors.

“And I, as a daughter of Nepal by adoption and three-quarters Scottish by birth, shall be shouting myself hoarse from far away, uncaring about who wins but overwhelmed by these golden-hearted contests which will raise such a huge sum for those in greatest need. A thousand thanks to you all: shabash! and well done!”

Tony Brian, chair of Cricket Scotland, said: “Nepal is still recovering from the devastating earthquake that struck earlier this year.

“We thought that the Nepalese team’s arrival in Scotland would be a good opportunity to raise money and help a fellow cricketing nation.

A spokesman from Dumfries Cricket Club said: “Nepal might be a long way from Nunholm but we were all horrified by the devastation the earthquake caused earlier this year.

“The Nepalese are very passionate about their cricket and their best national team, matches can draw crowds of up to 15,000, and many follow their side online. So they will definitely be following the matches at Ayr this week and this distant support from Scottish Cricket will register with them.

“If ever there were a weekend to give cricket a try, this is it. Visit your local club and put an extra pound in the pot to help us support the recovery efforts in Nepal.”

For those who can’t attend a match at their local club this weekend, donations can be made online at www.justgiving.com/Cricket-Scotland .

Forsyth, the Greyfriars Medical Centre Dumfries Man of the Match, produced the innings of the day. He was caught for 95 off the third last ball, going for his century, having deposited a remarkable ten sixes over the boundary, and well beyond.

Another 120plus run partnership for Clydesdale’s third wicket between Scotland players, opener Majid Haq, 86 not out, and Richie Berrington, with 83, set up the visitor’s win but not before Dumfries took five wickets in the closing overs as Clydesdale reached the finishing line with five balls left and seven wickets down. Scott Beveridge claimed four of the wickets.

In the Western Premier Reserve league, Nunholm lost to Clydesdale 2nds, Titwood, by 87 runs. Titwood were six wickets down for just past the hundred but recovered to 210 all out. Davie Davidson took 6 wickets for 46 for the Dumfries side and was the Thomson & Jardine Dumfries Man of the Match. Alan Davidson and Drew Dawson set up the win with a fifty opening partnership, each scoring 30, but it required Chris Bellwood to see the side home with a top score of 35 not out aided by a not out innings of 15 from Niall Alexander.

Gurupal Singh then took three wickets, and Goodin two, as Langloan got close finishing seventeen runs short in the third last over when a direct hit from the boundary by Dave Strachan dramatically ran out the last man.

Dumfries’s Scott Beveridge finished off his matches for the Scotland Reivers in the North Sea Pro Series by contributing runs, two scores in the twenties, in his side’s two T20 matches against the Highlanders in Dundee. The latter’s two wins saw them win the ten match four team series which included two Dutch sides.

Cricket: Stafforce Dumfries suffer one wicket loss

9 06 2015

On Saturday in the Western Premier league, at Nunholm, Stafforce Dumfries were just on the wrong side of a one wicket loss in a very tense finish against Paisley side Ferguslie.

Dumfries set a total of 190 for 6 with all of the batsmen contributing and with scores in the thirties from Alan Davidson, Stuart Corbett-Byers and Josh Forsyth. Young Ferguslie spinner Hamza Tahir, on a helpful surface, slowed the scoring and importantly also removed the top four batsmen.

Dumfries had a good start when Ferguslie batted when Niall Alexander took a wicket LBW first ball and promptly had the other opener well caught in the slips. Ferguslie recovered thanks to a partnership between Michael English and David Stafford. However both were removed, English for 64, with just under fifty runs needed and seven wickets down.

Nevertheless the remaining batsmen proved equal to the task, aided by opportunities not being taken by Dumfries. The closing overs were eventful. In the second last over a diving one handed catch just failed to stick, and one run was called short, but the last pair for Ferguslie hit the winning runs with just three balls left after putting on sixteen for the last wicket.

That result was despite five wickets taken by the Cumberland Building Society Dumfries Man of the Match, opening bowler Niall Alexander, and also three from Scott Beveridge. In the Western Premier Reserve League the Dumfries 2nd XI fixture at Meikleriggs was cancelled due to rain.

On Sunday at Nunholm, in the second round of the Scottish Cup, a depleted Dumfries team was well beaten by a strong Arbroath side. Only the Park Gate Ltd. Dumfries Man of the Match Robert McBride was in the runs with the top score of twenty seven in a total of 82. Opener Brendon Ford then smashed 58 in short order to settle an eight wicket win with only the catch of the season by Alan Davidson as consolation for Dumfries.

On Saturday, Stafforce Dumfries play at Drumpellier in the Western Premier League and Nunholm play Langloan at home.
