Double victory for Dumfries teams

21 09 2014

Both Dumfries teams suffered defeats in the opening weekend (14th Sept) of the Aegon National Tennis Leagues. In league 2 Dumfries A traveled to Perth to play the Tayside league champions but found them too hot as Kinnoull Tennis Club won all four singles matches and both doubles to take the match 12-0. In the 4th division Dumfries B took on the Central league champions Falkirk and again the visitors were far to good for Dumfries as they won the match 12-0. This week (21st) saw a change in fortunes as both Dumfries teams managed to win their matches against 2 teams from Livilands Tennis Club who are based in Stirling. Their 1st team traveled to Dumfries to play Dumfries A but unfortunately they only managed to travel with 3 players. Dan McKiddie and Alex Shearman won their singles matches with Lister McKiddie losing his but Lister and Dan secured the win with victory in the doubles, this gave Dumfries A the match 10-2. Dumfries B took the long trip to Stirling to play Livilands 2 for the 3rd time in 4 years but on this occasion they managed to secure a victory. Lewis Gilmour, Chad Lawson and Michael Goldie all secured wins in the singles and Lewis and Chad completed the victory in the doubles, this gave Dumfries an 8-2 victory which is Dumfries B’s first ever win in the national leagues.

Next week (28th) sees Dumfries A travel to Glasgow to play Glasgow Uni whilst Dumfries B entertain Kirkhill Tennis Club from Glasgow.

Cricket: Dumfries win final game against Hillhead

15 09 2014

Jerry Goodin was top scorer and Man of the Match

Jerry Goodin was top scorer and Man of the Match

With the September summer persisting Dumfries won the season’s final game against Hillhead at Nunholm by thirty one runs in the sun.

Dumfries batted first and Jerry Goodin and Chris Bellwood had assuredly taken the score past fifty when Bellwood was removed, caught and bowled for 26. Chris Brockwell was another victim caught at mid –off after a brisk innings of nineteen, to have Dumfries at 78 for 3 after half of the forty overs.

Opener Jerry Goodin then found a partner in Farries and the pair put together a seventy run partnership. The Carlisle Refrigeration Man of the Match, Goodin, reached his fifty aided by two clean boundaries hit over the top and when he was caught for the top score of sixty Dumfries had reached the one fifty milestone with just over five overs left.

Wickets fell in the remaining overs as the attempt was made to boost the total. Farries was run out for a useful 29 and the Nunholm side finished on a defendable total of 179 for 8.

Chris McCutcheon dismissed the two Hillhead openers with the score having reached 35 and then two wickets to the leg-spin of Bradley plus a sharp run out by Niall Alexander positioned Hillhead at 95 for 5 with 12 overs left.

However number three Ali kept Hillhead interested in the chase, just, as he accelerated his scoring with two big sixes. Brockwell and McCutcheon came on to successfully tighten up the game and the latter had Ali caught, by Brockwell, for 56 as he skied a catch to mid-off.

Then Brockwell contributed a wicket stumped as McCutcheon, at the other end, cleaned up the remaining wickets to finish with match figures of 6 for 32. Hillhead ended on 148 all out to complete an enjoyable friendly on a warm day for the final Dumfries fixture of the season.

Cricket: Dumfries edge close win over Gatehouse

11 09 2014

Chris McBride top scored with a fifty for Dumfries

Chris McBride top scored with a fifty for Dumfries

The season is coming to a close too early for Dumfries ’s Sunday XI. Gatehouse were the visitors on a perfect cricket day; the sun shining on an immaculate Nunholm.

Batting first Dumfries had to be careful against tidy bowling but made steady progress with the top order all getting starts but failing to go on. Skipper Irwin then upped the tempo with some good strikes through the off side to reach 35, and when he departed Peter Johnstone, with 33 not out, kept rotating the strike to allow top scorer Chris McBride to make an unfussy fifty and newcomer Jack Austin to show off his brand of batting at the end.

A target of 184 to win in the forty overs was, one felt, dependant on Fraser Conn and Howard Bradley making significant contributions and they did not let their team down. Conn was unluckily bowled off his foot from one going down the leg side for 42 and Bradley made his first mistake when victory was in sight with a top score of 56.

The Dumfries bowling was variable. The old heads of Stuart Alexander and Dave Strachan provided the control but no wickets and the young pretenders came up with the wicket-taking deliveries but also some run-making opportunities.

In the end Dumfries were the winners by 7 runs in a game which could have gone either way.

The Roger Lever Photography Dumfries Man of the Match award went to Dave Strachan; not only for his miserly 7-over spell conceding just 12 runs but for his magnificent slip catch which had the batsman still shaking his head many an over later.

In their Murgitroyd T20 Semi-Final on Saturday at Clydesdale, Dumfries were struck with Twenty20 fever as they lost two batsman run out inside eight balls and then were four down in the fourth over. With the top four gone the innings never recovered to post any sort of target and Clydesdale cruised to a win. Then in the final Clydesdale were unable to chase a challenging target of 177 set by the eventual winners Grange.
