Alan Davidson was the player that picked up the trophies at the Dumfries Cricket Club 2013 Awards on Saturday evening.

He won the McKerrow Trophy as 1st XI Player the Year for his performances in the League and Cup as APD Dumfries finished third in the CSL Western Premiership.

He was the Club’s top wicket taker with 28 wickets, as well as the League’s second top wicket taker with 24, and completed an all-round effort as the Club’s third top run scorer with 338 runs for the side.

The season highlight was his remarkable spell of swing bowling to take 7 wickets for just 9 runs at Nunholm for a win against West of Scotland in the second last game which ensured that third spot. That also meant he picked up the Jimmy Steele Bowling Award. An Award he was already in line for having taken six wickets in a match a couple of weeks earlier. To complete his set of trophies his fellow team-mates weekly votes gave him the 2013 Players’ Player of the Year Award as well.

Spinner Jerry Goodin won the Freddy MacLachlan 2nd XI Player of the Year. He was by a distance the top wicket taker with 26 wickets as well as contributing valuable runs with the bat to help Eco-Genics Nunholm finish fourth in the Western Premier Reserve League.

The Young Player of the Year was fourteen year old Chris McBride as he consolidated his place up the order for the 2nd XI contributing over two hundred runs with his mature performances with the bat.

The Dumfries Women’s side finished third equal in their first season in the Scottish League and their Player of the Year went to Kirsty Strachan as top wicket taker and top scorer with one match-winning innings of seventy not out and for earning her first Scotland Cap. Particularly for the development in her bowling, the Strachan Cup for the Most Improved Player was awarded to Ryan Ryan.

The Dumfries Cricket Club AGM will take place at Dumfries Sports Club, Nunholm, on Friday the 22th Nov at 7pm.

Tennis: National League Champions

5 11 2013

The Dumfries Tennis Club Mens team has won league division 3 of the Aegon Scottish National Club League.

Unfortunately, the title decider with Stirling University did not proceed as Stirling conceded the game as they could not raise a team . It was not an ideal way to win the league, however the team remains unbeaten and looks forward to some fantastic and challenging matches in League 2 next year.

The team comprised Captain – Chris Topping, Lister and Dan McKiddie, Kyle Singh,Graeme Cross and Ritchie Cunningham.

Tennis: AGM – Thu 21 Nov

1 11 2013

The Dumfries Tennis Club AGM will take place on Thursday 21th November at 7.15pm in the sports club lounge.

The club is in need of a new chairperson to chair committee meetings and ensure what is decided is carried out effectively and we always need committee members to help run the club.

The club would also like to hear from anyone who is interested in being a team captain and a team player for 2014. We currently have 3 men’s teams, 2 ladies teams and 2 mixed teams competing in the D&G district leagues and 2 men’s teams competing in the national leagues.

This is your opportunity to have your say in the running of the club. Please get in touch with Michael Goldie at tennis@dumfriessportsclub.co.uk if you would like to nominate or be nominated for a position, or have a proposal to help keep the club running smoothly.

Your support at the AGM will be very much appreciated so please find the time to come along and use your voting rights!

Kind regards

Tennis: National Tennis League

23 10 2013

The third round of the Aegon National Tennis League Games took place last Sunday when Dumfries took on Waverley (Edinburgh).

Waverley are a well respected Edinburgh team and one of the strong contenders for Division 3. Dumfries continued their good form by winning the match 4-2. Dan McKiddie at one continued his good form being unbeaten in all matches so far and won a tight match in the third set match tie break.

Ritchie Cunningham at two put on an impressive performance to win convincingly 6-2, 6-3. Next at 3, Graeme Cross in his first match stepped up to the mark with a fine performance winning 6-3, 6-3. The last singles rubber was lost by Kyle Singh 6-3, 7-6 in a close encounter.

In the doubles, the scratch pairing of Dan and Graeme with their excellent double skills combined well to win 6-4, 6-3. The final rubber was lost by Ritchie and Kyle 6-3, 7-6 to make the overall result an excellent 4-2 win for Dumfries.

That sets up the grand finale against Stirling University this Sunday with both teams having won all their matches. Dumfries will have to play their best to beat a strong Stirling team.

Tennis: National Club League – 29th Sep

1 10 2013

Dumfries Men’s Tennis Team are currently taking part in the Aegon National Club League. In the first match against Dunfermline the team won in a match shoot out 7 – 6.

Last Sunday, 29th September they took on Craigmiller Park, Edinburgh at Nunholm. Lister McKiddie who had to play at 1 due to the ratings system was well beaten by his opponent – 6 – 0, 6 – 2. At 2 , Dan McKiddie had a comfortable win 6 – 1, 6 -0. Ritchie Cunningham had a very good win against a useful opponent 6 – 2, 6 – 3. Kyle Singh produced another excellent performance, growing in confidence from his win last week, winning 10 – 7 in the third set match tie break.

That meant Dumfries were 3 -1 up after the singles. In doubles, Lister and Dan McKiddie combined to take on strong opponents on paper. However, the McKiddie’s doubles experience from having played together a lot made the difference and they had a solid win 6 – 2, 6 – 3.

In the other doubles, Richard and Kyle combined in what was to become a dead rubber, lost a close match 7-6, 7– 6.

That means that Dumfries have won its first two matches and now play Stirling University at home on Sunday in what could well be the title decider as Stirling have won both their matches so far comfortably.

Cricket: Richardson blasts season’s fastest century

11 09 2013

It was a final Saturday run-fest at Nunholm when a Dumfries U23 side hosted the Southern Steelers. With the sides contending with intermittent showers it was an amazing innings by Dumfries’s Marcus Richardson that lit up the second innings and the match.

The Steelers set the ball rolling by amassing 234 for 5 from the allotted thirty overs in their high scoring first innings. Captain and opener Charlie Steel hit 44 at a run a ball. He was backed up by Noble with 39 and, in the later overs, by Faulkner with a rapid 43 and an even more rapid top score of 60 not out from Horn. Chris Brockwell was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets for just 26 on a day when everyone’s figures suffered.

Dumfries set off on an unlikely run chase and it was number three Richardson that settled into the task. Along with youngster Chris McBride, who merely scored at a run a ball, the pair went past the two hundred by adding 192 for the second wicket when McBride was run out attempting an ambitious run for a fine innings of 46.

However Richardson had sent the bowling to all parts as he hit 17 fours and 7 sixes. His century took just 57 balls as he hit a series of majestic shots. He had reached 135 in 79 deliveries when he followed McBride with the score still on 204, finally bowled by Jones.

With six overs to go thirty runs were still needed but further wickets affected the run rate and it came down to ten to win off the last over. The Steelers held their nerve and won a great game of cricket by one just run. Dumfries finished on 233 for 7 and the Good Man Home Improvements Man of the Match for the Nunholm side was, unsurprisingly, Marcus Richardson.

Tennis: 2013 Dumfries Club Championships

6 09 2013

The 2013 Dumfries Club Championships take place this weekend with the first final scheduled at 11am and the show event scheduled for 12.30.

This years Gents Final is between last years runner-up Richie Cunningham and Daniel McKiddie and I would suspect it is the first ever final to be played between 2 left handed players. Neither player has ever won this event, so a brand new winner is guaranteed.

All finals are scheduled and times can be viewed using the link below.
