Cricket: Captain’s innings by Beveridge

4 08 2009

It took a captain’s innings from Scott Beveridge on Saturday for second placed APD Dumfries to beat fourth placed Edinburgh at Nunholm in National League Division 2.

The match was reduced to 42 overs a side and Dumfries saved their best till first when a disciplined bowling and fielding effort constrained the Edinburgh innings to just 102 all out after 37 overs. Chris McCutcheon and Jim Patterson each took three wickets.

However, in contrast, the wheels fell off when Dumfries batted. Drew Dawson played positively hitting five fours which was the same as hit in the entire first innings. However he was out for 26 to Imran and he then continued to consign Dumfries to 37 for 5 having taken all five wickets with, it seemed, one happening every over. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: Bellwood leads APD Dumfries fightback

Man of the Match: Chris Bellwood who scored 93 not out for APD Dumfries

APD Dumfries moved back into second place in National League Division 2 with a 26 run win against West Lothian at Nunholm on Saturday to keep up promotion hopes.

The Dumfries side owed their victory to a fine 93 not out from Chris Bellwood after he came in with the side in trouble and to the two final wickets he took to end West Lothian’s run chase.

Dumfries opted to bat and as in the previous fixture at West Lothian the top order went cheaply with Van Wyk (C) taking two wickets. At 23 for 3, with the top run scorers for the season Corbett-Byers and Geary already gone, Bellwood came out to join Alan Davidson.

They took the innings past the twenty over mark and to a score of 66 when Davidson fell to another LBW for 22. Skipper Beveridge with 26 stabilised the innings with a partnership that moved the total to 110 when he was caught. With five wickets down and in the 33rd over a reasonable total was looking uncertain.

However the experienced head of Davie Davidson joined Bellwood to define the course of the match. Together they nursed the total along to 134 with ten overs to go and in those closing overs Bellwood took the opportunity to accelerate and display his array of attacking shots. Cricket: Byers Sixes Spree sinks Renfrew

22 07 2009

APD Dumfries notched up another win in their trip to Renfrew on Saturday in National League Division 2. Renfrew were restricted to 164 all out after being put in to bat. That total was reached by Dumfries comfortably with the loss of just four wickets.

Skipper Beveridge won the toss and unusually for the side opted to bowl first on what proved to be a good wicket with bounce.

It was Geary, in the Flintoff role of bowling the bouncers, and Patterson who made the early inroads dismissing numbers 2 and 3 for single figures as the score moved into the forties. However the danger man was the Renfrew professional Said, batting at 1, who was playing comfortably and controlling the innings.

He shared partnerships with Ul-Haq and Shakoor but with the score at 120 for 3 came the innings changing and probably game changing moment when Beveridge ‘struck-out’ Said. A drive to mid-on was stopped by a full length dive by Beveridge and wrong handed flick to the bowler’s end sent Said back to the pavilion run out by a good ten feet for 67.

With eighteen overs left the prospect of well over two hundred to chase changed drastically as Dumfries made inroads into the Renfrew batting line-up. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: Leaders Titwood second best to JMS Nunholm

22 07 2009

JMS Nunholm controlled their home fixture against league leaders Titwood in Westen Union Division 2 on Saturday. They took the bulk of the points on offer but were just unable to force the win when the visitors were 69 for 6 chasing 230 to win.

The Dumfries side were put in on a softer wicket due to heavy downpours during the week. With the full complement not present Titwood opened effectively with the left arm spin of M. Ali bowling over the wicket and he produced a series of five maidens in an extremely tight spell. However the openers of Russell Johnston and Tommy McBride had still given the side a solid start with a stand of 67 at just over three an over when Johnston was bowled for 30 trying to whip one through the leg side.

Gary Dalziel continued the support of McBride until the latter was out stumped trying to force the pace having scored a composed 56 including some flashing boundaries. At 107 for 2 and in the thirtieth over the innings was then given the necessary impetus with the arrival of skipper Chris McCutcheon. Read the rest of this entry »

APD Dumfries consolidated their third place in National League Division 2 with a 91 run win over SMRH at Nunholm on Saturday.

The crucial partnership of the match was between opener Alan Davidson and Josh Geary who shared a ninety run partnership taking the score from 58 for 2 to 148 when Davidson was run out for 59.

Two further thirty run partnerships raised the total to 212 for 5. Davidson and Geary pressed on and boosted the final total to 241 for 6. The Dumfries innings was controlled by Geary who finished not out with an excellent 73.  Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: Primary cricket at Nunholm

Primary cricket teams raring to go at Nunholm

Local primary schools have not quite been hearing the smack of leather on willow this summer – more the thump of plastic on plastic.

Along with a team from Galloway and another from Lockerbie, pupils from Collin, Duncow, Georgetown and Noblehill Primary Schools came to Nunholm for a series of Kwik cricket matches between ten teams.

For four Friday evenings in June the teams bowled fast, threw hard and hit big as five games took place simultaneously on the ground. In all there were over sixty young participants who enjoyed their time with bat and ball.

The Collin “A-Team” proved to be the champions – being undefeated in their 8 matches.

There was plenty of enthusiasm and no little skill on show and hopefully some of the primary pupils will have been enthused enough to return to Nunholm for some of the Dumfries Cricket Club weekly junior coaching sessions – which carry on through the summer holidays – on Mondays from 6.15-8pm.

Thanks go to the volunteers who umpired and organised the matches and the teachers and team managers for marshalling their sides.

Nunholm's Rennie and Johnston batting record

It was a day for records at Nunholm on Saturday as Russell Johnston and Richard Rennie took JMS Nunholm to an astonishing score of 346 for the loss of no wickets in 50 overs against Albert Park in Western Union Division 2. Johnston scored 191 not out, his second century of the season and his highest score, and Rennie scored 125 not out, his maiden century for the club.

Andrew Kyle with five wickets and Chris McCutcheon with three avoided the anticlimax of a draw by bowling Albert Park out for 121 in the 34th over to seal an emphatic 225 run win. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: APD slip up but another fifty for Cross

30 06 2009

It was “every run a prisoner” for APD Dumfries in a low scoring encounter at RH Corstorphine in National League Division 2 last Saturday. Unfortunately for the Dumfries side it was their opponents that played the get out of jail free card to claim a 22 run win in a match reduced to 38 overs a side.

The Edinburgh side were asked to bat first in conditions that meant that runs were hard to score. Their opener and professional Mommsen applied himself and reached the highest score of the day, a mere 34. Opening bowler Stuart Alexander bowled a tight spell and when Mommsen was dismissed by Beveridge three wickets were down for 55 off 16 overs.  Read the rest of this entry »

They were presented with the now characteristic maroon club rain jackets by club chairman Rory Fergusson. The firm which is based at Newbie and specialises in industrial control systems is now in its fourth year of sponsorship of the club which coincides with the clubs’ involvement in the Scottish National Leagues.

Elliot Graham of APD said “We are keen to play our part in supporting local clubs and organisations and in particular an energetic community club like Dumfries Cricket Club”.

Rory Fergusson, on behalf of the club said “We are very grateful for the support provided by APD and happy that APD Dumfries has become a name that trips off the tongue locally and in Scottish cricketing circles. Such support is vital for local sports clubs to survive these days with the continued and varied costs now associated with running a club. However we do hope that these rain jackets are not required until the end of the season.”
