Come Try!……RACKETBALL on 14 Nov

29 10 2010

The UK’s fastest-growing racket sport
Suitable for all ages
Have fun and get fit!

Racketball is played on a squash court with a bigger, bouncier ball and a bigger but shorter racket than those used for squash. You will run about a lot and get a really good work out – at least until you get better.

It’s a game suited to all ages and abilities, male and female, from beginners to the squash or tennis player who wants a fun alternative, and to the experienced player who wants to continue to play a slightly easier on the body but competitive sport.

With long rallies, racketball offers a fantastic aerobic workout and is a great fat burner! Many major muscle groups are used so it’s also great for shaping and toning the body. Whether you are new to the world of rebound racket sports, or an experienced squash or tennis player, you are guaranteed to enjoy racketball.

Free “Taster” sessions at Dumfries Squash Club
On Sunday 14th Nov 2-5pm

Come along and see what the racket is all about! Rally up your friends, and give it a try – it’s indoors so no need to worry about inclement or cold weather.

All equipment is provided, all you need to bring is a pair of trainers (not black-soled please) and plenty of energy.

We’ll even throw in a bit of coaching of the basics if you need it.

Places are limited. View the poster here.

E-mail us at info@dumfriessquashclub.co.uk or call the Club on 01387 252527 to register a reserved place, or just turn up on the day although you may have to wait.

Squash: D&G Accredited Sports Club

11 10 2010

Dumfries Squash Club achieved Sports Club Accreditation from Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Leisure and Sports Services at the end of September.

Dumfries Squash Club - Accredited Sports Club

This achievement should make it easier for us to access Third Sector Funding and more importantly reassure parents and the wider community that we are a safe, effective and child-friendly club.

We can now proudly exhibit our new award on the website.

Squash: Doubles Tournament

11 10 2010

The annual squash doubles tournament once again attracted a good turn-out of 8 pairs. The draw thus consisted of two groups of 4 pairs based on a round-robin format.

The winners of the first group were Chris McCutcheon and Raymond Currie with Jimmy Wells and Steven Forsyth finishing as runners-up. In the second group Garry McKean and Danny McBryde finished runners-up to Keith Gristwood and Peter Allen.

The semi-finals saw the winners of each group take on the runners-up with McCutcheon and Currie defeating McKean and McBryde, and Wells and Forsyth beating Gristwood and Allen.

The final promised to be a close-run contest and it lived up to its pre-match billing. The old pro Jimmy Wells kept his team in the match and levelled the score at one set-all, setting up the decider. The final game was very tight with neither side gaining any clear advantage and it went close right to the very end. It reached 14-14 with either side then requiring a 2 point lead to claim victory. Finally at 17-15 McCutcheon and Currie edged it to lift the trophy.

Squash: Junior Club Championship

11 10 2010

The junior club tournament attracted 6 entries and was played in a round-robin format. After 4 rounds of matches, the last two remaining unbeaten players were Dean Brotherston and Danny McBryde. The result of their head-to-head match would thus decide the title.

In a close first game Brotherston came out on top and further extended his advantage by taking the second game. McBryde put in more effort in the third game but came up short against an in-form Brotherston who won the third game and the match to lift the Junior Champion Cup.

Squash: Nithsdale Sports Council Grant

11 10 2010

The Squash Club applied for, and was awarded, a grant of £500 from Nithsdale Sports Council. This grant is to be used towards the costs of putting 6 members of the club through the UKCC Level 1 squash coaching course being run by Scottish Squash and Racketball commencing on October 31st at the Club.
