Hockey: Dumfries ladies win league

5 06 2009

Dumfries Ladies 1st XI hockey team have been crowned champions of the Scottish West District Division 2 league.

They finished in style with a champagne toast after their last match. The team came out top against 10 other teams from Greenock to Uddingston, winning 13 out of their 17 matches for the 2008-2009 season. The team will move up to Division 1 in September.

The ladies 2nd XI team endured a competitive season in Division 3, facing both strong and experienced teams, with many younger players showing real promise for the future.

They won four out of their 16 matches, with Angela Beattie, team captain, being awarded the Division 3 player of season. The team will start the 2009-2010 season in Division 4.

The men’s team had their most successful season for many years and finished in third place in Division 2, narrowly missing out on promotion. The men finished with eleven victories, one draw and seven defeats, scoring 56 goals and conceding 38.

Congratulations go to players’ player of the season Ross Wilson and to top scorer for the season Toby Austin.

All ladies played outstandingly well this season, showing commitment and true team spirit.

Special thanks to Angela Beattie, Gladys McClymont, John Bennett, Bobby Lees, Iain Callander, and all players who played in matches throughout the season helping us keep a full team on the pitch.

Hockey training is open to all ages and abilities on a Tuesday night between 6pm-8pm at King George V.

A club spokesman said: “Please come along to improve your fitness, learn about hockey or to socialise with events being held throughout the year.”

Competitive matches are played on Saturdays during the season from September-March. From April to May a summer league competition is held between several local teams on a Tuesday between 6.15pm-8pm, again all players are welcome to attend.
