Scotland’s captain reports from Wales

29 04 2008

It was with great excitement that the Nunholm squash contingent arrived at the Welsh Institute of Sport on Friday for a quick practice to get used to the courts prior to the start of the Masters Home Internationals. Warm and true they suited us well.

5 pm arrived and we were on court against Wales who were keen to win on home soil. With the gents team playing on the court beside us we supported each other.

The Wales number 5 narrowly beat Sandra Wilkes, the ex-club champion at Nunholm now playing out of Dear Park, 3-1. I was on next -as captain I really needed to win to keep the tie alive. I played some of my best squash ever at number 3 (I love a hot court when the ball sits up nicely!) and beat the Welsh girl 3-0. Sadly the team were beaten 3 ties to 2 though.

The men’s over 45’s with Jimmy Wells at number 2 were triumphant over Wales in a win which carried them through to come runners-up to England in the Competition and meant that Jimmy brought yet another piece of silverware home to Dumfries.

The womens over 40’s came third being dispatched 5-0 by England but then beating Ireland comfortably 4-1. I won against Ireland again at number 3 with a tough 3-1 match but the English girl was just too strong for me.

It was a successful weekend with some great squash and an honour to captain my team. Jimmy now awaits the fixing of his injured knee before beginning the 2008-9 season with renewed enthusiasm.

Meanwhile I still have a bit of work to do to ensure that I play my very best in the over-35’s team which looks like it may be our strongest ever this year when we play host to the other 3 nations at Edinburgh Sports club in 3 weeks time.
