Hockey: Ladies win Ayr tournament

7 09 2008

The Dumfries ladies’ first game on Saturday was against the strong host team of the tournament, Ayr.

Dumfries were struggling to find their feet and a very frustrating game saw many chances missed with Swanston, McCubbin and Miller all coming close.

Unfortunately, Ayr scored an opportunistic goal against the run of play and then closed down their defence to seal them game 0-1.

Not pleased with this start to the weekend, there was a tactical change before the ladies’ next opposition – a young team from Kellburn.

This proved to be a tough game but Dumfries went ahead after five minutes when a penalty corner shot from Miller found the backboard.

Kellburn then applied the pressure and scored from a well-worked penalty corner.

Dumfries were determined to win with some excellent running on the wing from Raverty, and soon a cross into the D found McNay who converted to finish the match 2-1.

The last match of the day saw Dumfries take on East Kilbride, and with two league table games and two friendlies already played, legs were beginning to tire!

But Dumfries rose to the challenge.

A well-worked midfield of Bryce, Bonaccorsi, Miller and Raverty played the strikers in who sent four goals past the keeper. Two courtesy of McCubbin and another two fired home by Swanston.

The ladies ended day one with nine points, sharing the top of the table.

Sunday morning they faced East Kilbride who seemed determined to put the previous day’s 4-0 loss behind them.

EK went ahead after a few minutes with a controversial goal and Dumfries failed to equalise with a number of shots fired wide of the posts.

The match against Ayr would prove crucial to the ladies’ chances of reaching the final.

The encounter was hard fought and defensive play from Seymour and the Beatties was clinical, while some excellent saves from McNay blocked out the Ayr attack. It ended 0-0 which was enough for Dumfries to go through to the final to play Ayr AGAIN!

As the rain poured, the players were hoping it was a case of third time lucky!

A much more confident Dumfries outfit secured the majority of the possession.

Griffin and McNay weaved through the Ayr defence to win a succession of penalty corners, the second of which saw Swanston slip the ball left to Bryce who hammered the ball home to go 1-0 up.

It was now a case of holding onto the lead, McCubbin made some great saves to win the match and a successful Dumfries campaign!
