First points secured for Dumfries in season opening match

17 10 2008

Dumfries mens hockey team welcomed GHK to the King George V Park on Saturday hoping to secure their first league points of the new season.

However, after a disappointing first half display saw the home side 2 – 0 down, a win seemed very unlikely but this was to be the proverbial game of two halves.

Losing centre forward Clark to a yellow card offence somehow triggered a quite astonishing turnaround of fortunes. Despite the temporary suspension, Campbell reduced the deficit following the penalty corner secured at the time of Clark’s dismissal.

Minutes later a mazy run from captain of the day Robertson saw the ball pushed past the bemused visiting keeper to bring the teams all square.

Now up to full strength following Clark’s return, it was Clark who managed to put Dumfries in front as GHK’s play totally fell apart.

Dumfries began to dominate the proceedings and Elliot Willets capped his debut with what was to be the winning goal with a deft touch in the circle to double the Dumfries advantage.

GHK just couldn’t seem to find their way in the second half but on breakaways they also somehow to pose a threat and with minutes remaining their centre forward eluded the home side’s defence and beat the advancing keeper from the top of the D to produce a nervy finish.

But Dumfries managed to hold on and gain their first points of the season with a narrow victory.

Man of the match went to John Bennett for a solid display in the centre of the field.
