Cricket: Alan debuts in Australia’s Sheffield Shield

Dumfries CC - Alan Davidson

Alan Davidson, Dumfries and New South Wales?

Dumfries Cricket Club’s Alan Davidson made his debut recently for New South Wales in Australia’s Sheffield Shield, albeit in a surprise fleeting appearance. A former member of the Scotland Under-19 squad, Alan is playing first grade cricket in Newcastle, Australia for the Wallsend club and had a weekend off when the local grade cricket was cancelled due to a first class match between NSW and Tasmania which was being played at the Newcastle Sports Ground.

At one point when NSW were fielding they found themselves with their 12th man already on the ground and another fielder coming off. Word went round that they needed another substitute fielder. Despite the presence of the local players, Alan leapt at the opportunity, apparently literally, and was running to the changing rooms to seize the day.

Fortunately he was found kit and did not embarrass Dumfries CC by appearing in shorts. He steadfastly fielded for four balls, at square leg, did not drop a catch, in fact did not field a ball but claimed the bragging rights.

He can now say he has taken the field with Australian internationals Katich and Jacques, amongst others, and apparently will be resplendent in a signed New South Wales shirt this summer.

Meanwhile in the club scene his performances have merited an opening spot in the competitive first grade competition and have included scores of 25 and 40 not out in one recent game.

New South Wales won the Shield match by 114 runs and first class debuts were awarded to Doolan of Tasmania and Davidson of Dumfries (well maybe).
