2008 Award Winners: Byers, Kyle and Johnston

With the season fast approaching and a Homecoming Match on Saturday the 18th April, Dumfries Cricket Club interrupted the pre-season training with the Annual Club Dinner and Awards last weekend.

The awards were for the 2008 season and it was wicketkeeper Stuart Corbett-Byers that picked up the 1st XI Player of the Year award. His 14 catches behind the stumps and an impressive 7 stumpings for APD Dumfries in Scottish League Divison 2 were backed up with the second top runs total for the club.

This was greeted with much delight by his sponsors the Nunholm Card School!

The 2nd XI Player of the Year for JMS Nunholm was batsman Russell Johnston for the second year in a row. His two centuries and the top runs aggregate of 415 for JMS Nunholm in the Western Union Division 2 secured him the trophy and helped to secure the team’s place in that division.

The Young Player of the Year was Robert McBride who was the mainstay of the 2nd XI opening attack. He easily bowled the most overs and was the top wicket taker with 19 wickets but was really not rewarded with all the wickets his efforts deserved.

The Jimmy Steele Bowling Award went to Andrew Kyle for an excellent display of swing bowling that earned him the club’s best figures of the season of 5 wickets for just 9 runs in the 2nd XI match against Glenpark.

Also in a new innovation for last season a running tally of votes for each game by the 1st XI players meant that the opening bowling attack of Stuart Alexander and Alan Maskrey were neck and neck for the Player’s Player of the Year Award until the last game of the season. That award went to Alan Maskrey for his telling contributions, the most overs bowled, and his 16 wickets.

Meanwhile senior training at Nunholm moved from Saturday mornings to the evenings this week.

The Club’s main Training night is Tuesday from 6pm with an additional session on Fridays at the same time. The club are always interested in new players and they are welcome to come along to these training sessions or can contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455.
