Hockey: Fine win for depleted side

4 12 2009

Dumfries travelled to Giffnock with a depleted squad of only nine players. This was a crucial game as both teams were fighting for points to pull away from the bottom two places.

In the early part of the game Dumfries remarkably found themselves having equal possession with their opponents. The opening goal came midway through the first half when a Rennie shot was saved by the keeper but the cat-like reactions of Clark saw him first to react and he slammed the ball through the keeper’s legs.

Dumfries pressed for a second and some neat passing saw Redman draw a Giffnock defender in and he knocked the ball off the defender’s foot in the area winning a penalty corner for Dumfries. This time the ball was dragged to the top of the area where Callander fired a low drive in at the near post to double the lead.

Giffnock were keen to get back and only a fine save by Moscrop kept them at bay.

Dumfries failed to sharpen up when Giffnock came back at them again and a driving run saw two Dumfries players dragged to the ball and a neat through ball left the striker with only Moscrop to beat. His shot squeezed under the body of the Dumfries keeper and the goal got Giffnock back into the game.

Half time came shortly afterwards and Dumfries were happy to go into the break in-front.

Further in to the half it was clear to see that Dumfries were tiring due to the lack of players, but they were determined to get another goal and it was Callander who produces some outstanding skill to get the two-goal cushion.

A good tackle just in the Dumfries half saw Clark get the ball. He then rounded a defender before pulling the ball onto his back stick and his effort flew past the Giffnock keeper and into the top corner of the goal.

The full time whistle sounded and Dumfries had won the game through determination and good team-work, something which had been lacking in previous performances.
