Tennis: Title for Sophie

6 03 2010

Sophie Robinson of Dumfries had a superb start to the 2010 tennis season when she lifted the Northumberland Open title in Newcastle last weekend.

Sophie had to come from a set down and 3-1 down in the second set to record a gritty three-set win in the final against a top ranked player.

The Gold Medal prize she won for the title is another addition to Sophie’s collection of titles won locally and afar and was in the U14 age category.

Coach Colin Dunbar said: “Sophie has the ability to be one of Scotland’s top players and has beaten most of the girls in those positions currently.

“The absence of any indoor facilities in our region has a huge impact on our performance players. We are the only region in Scotland without any. Like a few other of our top players, Sophie’s parents have to travel hundreds of miles to Prestwick and Carlisle just to take her to training.

“Some of our talented kids don’t have that luxury, so it’s a real shame we could have the next Andy Murray in Dumfries and Galloway and not have the facility infrastructure to allow them to reach the heights they could”.
