Campbell Potts powers to a century for Site Electrical Dumfries on Sunday

APD Dumfries maintained their unbeaten start in National League Division 2 with a 5 wicket win away at Edinburgh on Saturday to remain top of the table. Man of the match Scott Beveridge contributed with both bat and ball taking three wickets and then scored 45 as Dumfries chased a total of 161.

Dumfries chose to bowl first and, although the opening attack of Robert McBride and Josh Geary bowled rapidly, extras and boundaries gave Edinburgh a good start. Geary, however, achieved the breakthrough having Majeed caught in the tenth over with the score on 47.

Left-armer Beveridge replaced McBride and dismissed the other opener Hussain. Then in tandem with Jim Patterson the two applied the brakes and removed numbers three and four. At 57 for 4 the complexion of the innings had changed and at the half way point of 25 overs Edinburgh were back to three an over. Leg spinner Goodin came on and also bowled tightly and in the process took another wicket lbw.

The bowlers were rotated as the Edinburgh innings revived with numbers 8 and 9. Ahktar scored 23 before being caught and Geary took his third wicket bowling Hussain for 28. The innings closed nine down for 161. The bowlers had been backed up by a good fielding display especially from the youngsters Brotherstone and Telfer.

Dumfries lost an early wicket but Davie Davidson and a Scott Beveridge in a hurry pushed the score on to eighty. Then Beveridge tried to smash a full toss, didn’t, and was bowled for 45, 38 of them in boundaries.

Davidson was snared lbw for 27. However at that point Stuart Corbett-Byers was another batsman in a hurry and he hit the spinner, Poojary, for 6, 4, 4 and then another 6 to end the match on 34 not out with over 20 overs left.

New ball success for Nunholm

JMS Nunholm beat Cambusdoon at home by 133 runs in Western Union Division 2 on Saturday after compiling a total of 211. Niall Alexander and Chris McCutcheon then broke through the Ayr side’s top order to share 7 wickets as they reached just 78 all out.

Nunholm produced a series of batting cameos as they stuttered whilst losing regular wickets. Marcus Richardson looked in form until he chipped up a catch for 24 and two were deceived by the innovation of young leg spinner Spiers opening the attack.

Opener Farries had negotiated his way past fifty when he was dismissed lbw, the first of four wickets to McCrossan. 117 for 5 was an unsatisfactory position but then Ross Laidlaw, in his first innings of the season, and Chris McCutcheon drove the innings on.

The pair comfortably put on over sixty during the course of the next ten overs. Disappointingly, Laidlaw lobbed up a catch for 32, then McCutcheon was stumped for 35 and he was also followed by another lbw. Nunholm were back in strife at 189 for 8 with just under ten overs to go. Johnstone and Alexander Snr successfully nursed the side past the two hundred to a total of 211.

That total on this day looked gettable however McCutcheon got an early wicket as a great ball cut back and bowled McCrossan, It took until his third over for Niall Alexander to find his line when he bowled Mitchell. McCutcheon claimed another bowled in the next over. Alexander followed with two more wickets, caught and McCutcheon got yet two more to end up in the starring role with four wickets.

Johnstone also got a wicket in his first over as a youthful Cambusdoon side wilted in the heat. Finally the last man was bowled to bring the curtain down on the innings and a final total of 78.

Potts Powers to Century for Site Electrical Dumfries

Site Electrical Dumfries scored runs in the sun at Nunholm against Renfrew in Strathclyde League Division 2 last Sunday. The man leading that charge was Campbell Potts who scored a century as the side amassed an imposing total batting first to ensure a convincing win.

A well matched pairing of Potts and Andrew Batty opened for Dumfries. Newcomer Batty with his busy running was a good foil to pinch hitting Potts. With a run rate approaching nine an over it took the wicket of Batty playing on for an assured 28 to slow things slightly.

However Campbell’s aim was to register another century for the club. After a drinks break with him in the nervous nineties he reached that milestone after only 22 overs and out of a total of 188.

His celebration was short lived as he was promptly bowled the next over and the innings resumed a more normal course with Williams and Geary accumulating runs and accelerating the scoring in the closing overs to each finish in the forties. Site Electrical Dumfries ended up with a total of 292 for 6.

In reply Trevor Newport and Andrew Forsyth opened the attack and imposed themselves on the batting with Forsyth extracting bounce from the wicket to claim three wickets. Newport took one as wickets fell and were shared amongst the bowlers. A sound all-round team display in the field meant that Renfrew struggled for runs and finished a long way short with their total of 58. However the course of the match had been dictated by Potts’ century and his burst of runs in the opening overs.
