Dumfries Ladies 1st XI 4 – 2 GCW V. Sunday 4th September, KGV

Dumfries Ladies started the season well, fielding a strong side against tough opposition. This encounter was vital to Dumfries who are looking to build on their cup success last year by winning West District Division 1. The first half saw fast ball pace and some great attacking play from both sides. GCW won several penalty corners which they failed to convert and it was Dumfries who took the lead after 20 minutes. From a free hit Gill Green found Emma Miller who drove the ball into the D.From there Rebecca Topping set up Elen Austin who swept the ball into the goal from the back post to convert a well worked goal for the home side. Dumfries played safe for 10 minutes until half time and the score remained 1-0 at the change.

Five minutes into the second half Topping carried the ball from the halfway line passing 3 players on her way to the D where she was fouled and earned a penalty stroke. Green neatly slotted the ball home to give Dumfries a 2-0 lead, which by no means was comforting to the home side who knew the potential of their opposition. GCW soon bounced back with a breakaway goal that was unfortunate to slide past keeper Ally McCubbin and an overloaded defensive line, 2-1.

At the restart Dumfries used the pace of Jane Swanston, Green and Topping to drive at the opposition and as they broke into the D Swanston drilled the ball into the far corner. This rallied the Dumfries side who then went on to score a fourth through great running again from the forwards, Swanston drew in three defenders to feed Topping a clear shot in the D which hammered the back board. At this point Dumfries were dominating with slick passages of play and it took ex GB star Wendy Justice to create a goal scoring opportunity for the visitors in the last five minutes of the game. The final score 4-2 a reflection of a resilient team effort to start the season, new additions to the team Judith Armstrong and Jane Borland made a huge impact in defence. Player of the match was awarded to Jane Swanston by the opposition and Gill Green received Players’ Player for their outstanding efforts in attack.

Squad: A McCubbin, A McNay, N McCormick, J Armstrong, M Anderson, J Borland, E Austin (1), E Miller (c), G Green (1), F Bryce, J Swanston (1), R Topping (1), L Kennedy.
