Cricket: Runs for Beveridge in a mixed weekend for Dumfries

In the Western Premier League on Saturday, Stafforce Dumfries lost their away match at Stenhousemuir thanks to a stand-out batting partnership for the home side.

Dumfries batted first and reached a respectable 228 for 8 after a fine innings of 75 from Scott Beveridge with contributions throughout the batting line-up including 31 by skipper Robert McBride and twenties from Alan Davidson, Marcus Richardson and Niall Alexander. Stenhousemuir Captain Iain McDonald was the main wicket taker and finished with 6 for 49 from his nine overs.

Stenhousemuir had a way to go at 46 for 2 after 14 overs but overseas players Davidar and Jappie then produced a match winning undefeated partnership of 183. Davidar reached his century, 102 not out, and Jappie scored 69 not out whilst Dumfries strove for a further wicket. The final runs were scored in the second last over for an 8 wicket win for Stenhousemuir. For Dumfries, Scott Beveridge was the Cumberland Building Society Man of the Match for his top score.

In the Western Premier Reserve League, Nunholm won their home match against Stenhousemuir seconds by 7 wickets and it was the Nunholm opening bowlers that set the course of match. The Bryce Walker Man of the Match Drew Dawson took 5 wickets, and Gurupal Singh took 2, as the visitors were bowled out for just 50. Nunholm Vice-Captain Adam Elliott then scored 28 not out as the winning total was swiftly reached for the loss of three wickets.

The following day the Dumfries Sunday XI managed an exciting win with just one ball remaining at West of Scotland. West of Scotland hit 229 for 7 in their forty overs batting first, with the wickets shared between youngster Callum Reynolds-Lewis, Mark Irwin and the spin of Josh Geary. Then Todd Rafferty fell one short of his fifty in the second innings but an undefeated partnership between DuPont Teijin Films Man of the Match Geary and Gurupal Singh took Dumfries over the line for a four wicket win.

This Saturday, in the Western Premier League, Stafforce Dumfries take on Drumpellier at home at the Galloway Industrial Nunholm ground. Dumfries seconds play away at Langloan in the Premier Reserve League.

On Sunday, Nunholm and the Dumfries Sports Club host a Women Only Fun Sports Day, open to teams for 5 a-side sports activities, with the proceeds going to Dumfries and Galloway Disability Sport.

Junior Cricket: Dumfries juniors enjoyed their recent game at Galloway which had the added bonus of a win after good performances on both sides. The return encounter takes place this Friday evening at Nunholm. Junior cricket coaching for boys and girls of P4-S1 ages, takes place on Mondays at 6:15-8pm at Dumfries Sports Club, Nunholm Road, with a free taster session.

After School Primary Cricket also takes place at the club on Thursday afternoons (4-5pm). New starters are encouraged to come along.
