Dumfries were put in and were in the strong position of 105 for 1 at the half way stage thanks to stands between Tom McBride and Drew Dawson (29) and Scott Beveridge (22). Dumfries then accelerated aided by a rapid 27 from skipper Stuart Corbett-Byers and an assured 50 not out by Chad Breetzke. The Nunholm side finished on a challenging 243 for 7 with opener Tom McBride the side’s top scorer with 78.

Cricket: Trophy Final weekend for Dumfries

Robert McBride in batting action for Dumfries

After a free league Saturday APD Dumfries have two big games this weekend.

On Sunday they play the final of the SCU Trophy at Stirling against East League Division 1 winners, Fauldhouse.

On Saturday they play the first of three Championship play-off matches against the other sides in the top four when they take on Poloc in Glasgow.

The final two games, against Renfrew and then West Lothian, take place next Saturday and Sunday and will decide the title winners and promotion to the Premiership.

Meanwhile Brammer Dumfries lost their West Sunday League match at Benfield Park Nunholm against Hillhead. A young Dumfries side batted first and despite an early wicket the pairing of Robert McBride and Chris Bellwood put together a fifty partnership.

They were batting productively and the score had reached 74 for 1 when the spin of Hillhead pro Sachin Chaudhary was introduced. He induced a false shot from Bellwood in his first over, out caught for 38, and a couple of overs later further dented the Dumfries innings having McBride caught behind for 35.

Thereafter it took the experienced Davie Davidson to marshal the lower order. He hit 38 before he was left stranded in a run out in the final over and Dumfries finished on 155 for 8.

Cameron Telfer claimed a wicket early on thanks to the first of two good catches standing up by keeper Lee Dunlop. However Hart was hitting the loose delivery and went on to be out just short of his fifty.

Niall Alexander bowled well as did the series of bowlers who were tried but Chaudhary was well settled and he in partnership with Bond took the Hillhead run chase past the Dumfries total in the 35th over for the loss of four wickets. Robert McBride took the home side award for Monaghan’s Jewellers Man of the Match.

Cricket: APD Dumfries into Championship play-offs

10 08 2011

Telfer took 7 wickets for Nunholm

APD Dumfries were unable to complete their important league game at Freuchie in the Scottish Championship on Saturday. Freuchie scored 229 for 7 after a batting onslaught in the last ten overs rallied their total. Chris McCutcheon and Chad Breetzke each took two wickets. However the match was abandoned due to rain at that point without the Dumfries innings starting. Nevertheless second placed Dumfries have still secured their place in the top four play-offs to determine the title winners.

It was a similar story for Site Electrical Nunholm at Langloan in the West SNCL Reserve League. Langloan scored 169 all out with JB Houston Man of the Match Cameron Telfer taking a remarkable 7 wickets in 7 overs for Nunholm when introduced into the attack late on in the innings. Nunholm were 54 for 2 when rain also put paid to the game in the second innings.

On Sunday Dumfries’s appearance in the Scottish Murgitroyd Twenty20 finals day in Glasgow suffered the same fate, cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch, with the finals now rescheduled for Sunday, 4 September. This Saturday APD Dumfries have no match in the Championship and Site Electrical Nunholm play away at Whitehaugh.

It was more positive weekend for injured Tom McBride after Scotland Under 19s qualified for the U19 World Cup next year in Queensland, Australia. He will be hoping for a return to that squad after missing the tournament due to a broken finger.

Meanwhile Niall Alexander helped Scotland U15s beat Ireland by six wickets in the European Championships at Stirling on Monday by taking 3 for 16 in the first innings.

The club at Nunholm welcomes new players; senior, junior, women and girls. Senior training takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays and junior and women/girls coaching is on Monday evenings. For details contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455 or see www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk .

Beveridge took ten weekend wickets for Dumfries

APD Dumfries remain in contention in three competitions after registering a win over Kelburne in the Scottish Championship to go second and beating Prestwick to reach the SCU Trophy final last weekend.

This Sunday the side play in the Scottish Twenty20 Finals day against Carlton in the semi-finals after winning the Borders final.

However skipper Stuart-Corbett-Byers is focussed on the league match at Freuchie on Saturday, “our main focus is definitely the league, but it’s pretty exciting to have two pieces of cup silverware still in our sights too.”

On Saturday APD Dumfries fought back against Kelburne for a 49 run win in a low scoring encounter at Benfield Park Nunholm. After losing four wickets early, Dumfries only totalled 117 thanks to a fighting fifty from Thomson and Jardine Man of the Match, Robert McBride. Kelburne then collapsed from forty for two to be all out out for 88. Left arm spinner Scott Beveridge did the damage taking six wickets for just 22 for his best bowling figures for Dumfries.

Dumfries celebrate taking the winning Kelburne wicket

On Sunday the side convincingly won their SCU Trophy semi-final against Prestwick also at Nunholm. Prestwick were dismissed for 93 with Scott Beveridge again in the wickets taking 4 for 9, and Jim Patterson and Chris McCutcheon each taking three wickets. Beveridge also scored 44 not out in the reply as Dumfries won by 8 wickets in the 20th over to deservedly share the Star Refrigeration Man of the Match award with Jim Patterson in a productive weekend for the left hander.

This Saturday Site Electrical Nunholm are away at Langloan on Saturday in the West SNCL Reserve League and the Sunday side, Brammer Dumfries, are at home against GU Staff. The club at Nunholm is always keen to welcome players; senior, junior, women and girls. For details contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455 or see http://www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk.

McCutcheon took seven wickets over the weekend

APD Dumfries progressed into the finals of the Scottish Twenty20 competition on Friday with a 7 wicket win at Gala in the Borders final.

Chris McCutcheon with four wickets and Scott Beveridge with three restricted Gala to 76 for 9.

Beveridge then hit 40 as Dumfries eased to a win.

Dumfries followed that with another convincing nine wicket victory at RH Corstorphine in the Scottish Championship.

Richardson top scored for Nunholm

The win strengthened their fourth place as Chris McCutcheon took another three wickets and Jim Patterson two in a Corstorphine total of just 92 all out. Opener Drew Dawson took his team to the winning total with a score of 61 not out.

Site Electrical Nunholm registered a third win in a row to go fifth by beating Cambusdoon at home in the West SNCL Reserve League.

The younger members of the side were instrumental in the win with spinner Chris McBride taking 2 for 23 as Cambusdoon reached 144 for 9.

Marcus Richardson then top scored with 45 as Nunholm won by 5 wickets.

Dumfries fell just five runs short chasing Ayr’s total of 234 for 3 in the West Sunday league.

Breetzke hit 138 not out

It was a tale of two centuries at Nunholm with McLaughlin scoring 125 not out for Ayr and Chad Breetzke hitting an excellent 138 not out as Dumfries finished on 229 for 4.

Dumfries’s Tom McBride was forced to withdraw from the Scotland squad for the U19 World Cup qualifiers on Sunday. He broke a finger diving for a catch in the Corstorphine game.

Niall Alexander played for the Scotland Under-15s against Shropshire at Nunholm on Monday but despite him taking 2 wickets for 22, Shropshire won by six wickets.

This Saturday a home win against Kelburne will see Dumfries move up the Championship table and the side play Prestwick at Nunholm on Sunday in their SCU Trophy semi-final
