Cricket: CWE Nunholm win in Western Cup

18 07 2012

In the Western Cup on Saturday, CWE Nunholm beat Shawholm by 84 runs at home to top their group and progress to the quarter-final stages and a home tie against Glasgow Accies.

Johnston in batting action against Shawholm

Nunholm batted first and had a stuttering start losing an early wicket and then a second with the score on 31. Russell Johnston, batting at three, was the mainstay of the early part of the innings. Shawholm were not giving runs away and leg-spinner Mahmood bowled well on his way to four wickets. He got a wicket in his first over as a short delivery was hit straight to midwicket and then Johnston, after batting well, was another wicket lbw for 29.

The youngest McBride was unlucky to be run out after hitting the stumps at the bowler’s end and when Mahood bowled another, the side were at 88 for 6 with just over half the overs gone.

However a mini revival took the score to 116 for 8 but Stuart Corbett-Byers (31) and Pat Druce with 24 not out delivered with forty runs at over five an over for a final score of 163 for 9 after the allotted forty overs on an awkward day for batting.

McCutcheon in bowling action at Nunholm

Two chances were put down before Nunholm made a breakthrough in the Shawholm innings with Chris McCutcheon dismissing both openers lbw to make it 29 for 2. Then four wickets went in the forties with the RF Angus Man of the Match McCutcheon taking five of the first six to fall, including a sharp first slip parry that was caught at second, to demonstrate the merits of bowling at the stumps.

When the sides went off for the persistent, ubiquitous, summer rain, Shawholm were 50 for 7. Upon the resumption Richardson swooped for a run out and Davie Davidson followed up his two wickets with two more. Some lively batting from Stout produced the top score of 20 not out but the visitors were all out for 79 in the 27th over.

Saturday’s Scottish Cup group game against Watsonians suffered from the Edinburgh deluges which meant that APD Dumfries finished second to Watsonians and are now in the Cricket Scotland Trophy and play Grange away in the quarter final on Sunday.

After the completion of the Cup group matches the league fixtures resume this Saturday. APD Dumfries play Greenock at Benfield Park Nunholm in the Western Premier League and CWE Nunholm are at Glenpark in the Western Premier Reserve.

Scotland: At Nunholm on Sunday, Scotland U15s won their match against Lincolnshire U15s by 4 wickets in the ECB U15 County Championship. Lincolnshire scored 125 for 9 but Scotland recovered from 72 for 6 to chase down a rain revised target of 105. For Scotland U19s, Dumfries’s Tom McBride scored 24 in a total of 167 in their win over the MCC at Arbroath on Monday in one of their last matches before leaving for Australia and the U19 World Cup next week. Niall Alexander has been with Scotland U17s for their ECB County two-day matches away at Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. After rain on Monday the Suffolk game was reduced to a one day match on Tuesday with Scotland losing by 3 runs in the last over chasing 234/8 after recovering from 70 for six wickets.

Junior Cricket: There was a good contribution from Fraser Strachan and Aiden Collingwood on Sunday who played for DG U14s in their defeat to Ayrshire at Prestwick. Fraser took two caught and bowled wickets in his seven overs and hit a rapid 14 and Aiden top scored with 20 not out and took one wicket opening the bowling in tandem with Fraser.

The Nunholm club’s junior coaching sessions continue over the holidays on Monday evenings from 6:15 to 8 at Dumfries Sports Club. These are also open to non-members, boys and girls and any beginners are very welcome. Tennis: Junior Leagues

6 06 2012

Dumfries Tennis Club has launched it’s first ever junior tennis singles league with great success.

This is a great opportunity for the juniors to take all their months and years of coaching and put their skills into action. May saw 11 juniors from 8 to 15yrs old competing to win the respective leagues.

A common problem throughout many tennis clubs is not the coaching programme, it’s what the kids do after coaching sessions are finished. Most don’t pick up a racket until the next coaching session. Being the most technically gifted player doesn’t win matches, the kids need competitive tennis to help them understand the game and to help them address their weak areas which they can then work on at coaching.

This month’s results and next month’s fixtures along with the rules can be viewed clicking the Junior Tennis league link.

Cricket: Alexander on Worcestershire radar

24 04 2012

Niall in action at Nunholm this season

Niall Alexander of Dumfries Cricket Club has been impressing the coaching staff at County side Worcestershire over the past few months.

He was spotted by a scout whilst opening the bowling for Scotland U15s in England last season and had a successful trial in matches at Worcestershire at the end of last season.

During the winter the youngster has been working hard on the technical side of his game training with Scotland U17s under the supervision of Cricket Scotland Coach, Craig Wright.

Over the Easter holidays the sixteen year old was invited to play for the Worcestershire Academy side at a 3 day cricket festival hosted by Shrewsbury School. The county’s Academy side is used to identify, and develop the next generation of Worcestershire players.

Against Millfield School his six over spell brought 1 wicket for 11. Rain reduced the second match to a Twenty20 match which was won by the hosts, Shrewsbury School. Promoted to open the bowling against the previous winners Worksop College in the third game he took 2 wickets for 17 off 7 overs of pacy swing bowling.

As a result of his performances Academy Head Coach, Damian D’Oliveira has invited him to return to Worcestershire for further games over the coming summer. So the Nunholm player has more future outings for their Academy side in prospect.
