Dumfries Cricket Club’s Niall Alexander has been in the action during the Scotland U19 tour to Sri Lanka.
The youngster has figured in the team’s matches against local sides and has claimed two wickets in two of the matches. The side have two wins and two losses and plenty of practice against spin so far.
The squad are preparing for the ICC World Cup Qualifiers which take place in the Netherlands this summer.
As well as matches and training the Scotland squad visited an MCC sponsored foundation in the south of the country and saw the tsunami relief projects in the area. There the players were out coaching the local schoolchildren. The side have two more games this week to conclude the tour.

Dumfries Cricket Club’s Niall Alexander is jetting out with Scotland U19s this week for a fortnight’s training camp in Sri Lanka.
The quick bowler, who played for Scotland U17s last season, is selected in the U19 squad for their tour which will involve playing six matches in and around Colombo and well as the chance for warm weather pre-season training.
The Scotland squad’s coach Craig Wright says that this is “a valuable learning opportunity for Niall” and also provides the opportunity to continue the technical aspects worked on during the winter indoor training sessions.
Niall himself is looking forward to the trip – “it should be a great experience for me and a big opportunity”.

Dumfries Cricket Club’s Women’s team were finalists again on Sunday at the Cricket Scotland Women’s Indoor Sixes Tournament in Glasgow. However this time they lost out to Edinburgh University in a high scoring match to finish runners-up.
A big entry with nine teams from around Scotland meant some frenetic Twenty20 cricket, here just twenty ball innings. In their group games Dumfries beat St Andrews University and Edinburgh Ladies to draw Stirling County in the semi-finals.
Stirling batted first and a crucial reaction catch by Sue McBride off Sue Jeffrey removed Scotland keeper Jack to help restrict the opposition to 24. However two wickets meant that skipper Sue Strachan had to find eight runs off the last four balls – reached with one ball left.
That meant another tussle with Edinburgh University. This time the University got off to a flyer rapidly passing thirty with some early boundaries. Rosy Ryan put the brakes on conceding just three runs but despite a run out by Kirsty Strachan the last two balls went for six and four for an imposing total of 52/1.
That gave the batters too much to do and lacking a similar number of boundaries the side finished eight runs short on 44/1 with Rachel Howard and Rosy Ryan not out and Kirsty Strachan top scorer. The Parkdale Garage Dumfries Player of the Tournament went to Rosy Ryan for her bowling performance.

Already in action in 2013 is Kirsty Strachan, one of the Dumfries Women’s team.
She played for the Scotland Womens Development XI in the MCC ARCH Women’s U19 Trophy in Abu Dhabi and Dubai last week.
The Scotland side lost to Wales and a very strong Sussex side which featured several England U19 players.
However they missed out on a win against Lancashire by just 13 runs and finished on a high with a heavy 9 wicket defeat of Durham. [Tour details and photos]
Also heading for the heat is the Nunholm club’s Niall Alexander who has been selected in the Scotland U19 squad travelling to a two week training camp in Sri Lanka at the end of March.
