Cricket: Dumfries lose to Ferguslie

21 04 2016

Stafforce Dumfries played Ferguslie at home on Saturday in their second pre-league friendly fixture and were on the wrong end of the first century of the season at Nunholm Road.

Morning ice on the wicket

Morning ice on the wicket!

Ferguslie batted first and their openers found their feet unlike the Dumfries bowlers. Together openers English and Ahmad set the tone for the encounter by putting on 148 for the first wicket at a healthy scoring rate.

The bowlers were unable to exert the necessary pressure apart from one catch which wasn’t taken. However Connor Jones found a much needed run-out in his first over thanks to the Thomson & Jardine Champagne Moment for Dumfries, Ahmad run out from the deep by Chris Bellwood for 55.

Dumfries had a better last twenty overs. The Anderson Kilts Dumfries Man of the Match Jones took three wickets, including that of the Scotland A batsman Michael English hitting out after an excellent century, and Geary one.  However the total was still a formidable 253 for 5 after the 50 overs.

Dumfries took their score into the thirties without loss but a play-on and then the bowling of spinners Hamza Tahir and then Haroon Tahir resulted in wickets. Andrew Dawson and Geary took the score past the hundred for four wickets but when both were spin victims, Geary for the top score of 36, any hopes of getting near the target disappeared.  Thereafter the innings subsided to 121 all out with Hamza Tahir taking four wickets and Haroon Tahir five for a Ferguslie win.

This weekend Nunholm Road hosts RH Corstorphine on a weekend tour in the last of the pre-league  friendly fixtures with the firsts playing them on Saturday and the 2nds, Nunholm, on Sunday.

Cricket: Stafforce Dumfries open season with a win

12 04 2016

The new cricket season started for Dumfries Cricket Club on Saturday, at home at Nunholm Road, with the first friendly fixture of 2016 for both Stafforce Dumfries and visitors Penrith.

20160409 567 Penrith - C Bellwood x800

Chris top scored with 72 not out for Stafforce Dumfries

Penrith batted first and found the Dumfries bowlers immediately on target with bowlers claiming wickets in their opening overs. Josh Geary took an early wicket in the very first over and then another in his second.

The first change bowlers also did the same with first over wickets for Pat Druce and Alan Davidson. Scott Beveridge and Connor Jones also claimed a wicket each to leave Penrith with wickets down.

However McLean and Hall responded by boosting the score and some late innings hitting by Hay took the final total up to 150 in the 40 overs. Wickets were shared amongst the bowlers with Alan Davidson and Josh Geary inflicting the most damage.

Davidsons, Alan and Davie, got into double figures early in the Dumfries innings but from 87 for 5 it required the Barbours Man of the Match Chris Bellwood to marshall the response with a fine innings of 72 not out. He and Niall Alexander shared a 65 run sixth wicket partnership to see the Nunholm side home. Hindmarsh claimed two of the wickets for Penrith in what was a good pre-league warm-up match for both sides.

The game’s RF Angus champagne moment was a nonchalant caught and bowled by Niall Alexander off a fiercely struck drive. This Saturday Dumfries play Ferguslie, home at Nunholm Road, in another pre-league friendly.

Start of Junior Cricket: With the Club’s summer coaching programme in schools having started this week, the weekly outdoor junior coaching sessions start on Monday (18th Apr, 6:15-8pm) at Dumfries Sports Club, Nunholm Road.
