Sue plays for Scotland this weekend

Four from Nunholm Squash Club, and one from Lockerbie Squash Club, will be on court representing Scotland in the upcoming Home International Masters facing opposition from England, Wales and Ireland.

Two play this coming weekend. Sue Strachan starts her matches in Dublin on Friday the 1st May in the Womens Over-35 category. Meanwhile Scotland’s number one, the redoubtable Davy Rogan, is in Nottingham on the same day to play in the Mens Over-70 internationals.

The following week Scottish Champion Jimmy Wells plays for the Scotland Over-45s in Edinburgh. Joining him in that team is Ronnie Carter from the Lockerbie Squash Club.

Also playing in Edinburgh that weekend is another Nunholm Scottish Champion, Robin Ridley, who is playing for the Scotland Over-50 team.

And Sue Strachan has yet a second tournament in Cardiff in a fortnight’s time for the Scottish Womens Over-45 team.

Good luck from the club in their matches.

The semi-finals brought together Finite Engineering v D & C Lindsay Forestry and Peter’s Fish and Chicken Bar v The Bard Vet team.

After the dust had settled it was the teams of Finite and Bard Vet who were to contest the final.

The format in the cup is of three games American scoring to 15 with a two-point float after every game which has proved to produce some very close matches in the past, none more so than in the final. Read the rest of this entry »

The 2009 Plate Finalists: Mike Service, Geoff Dean

The 2009 Plate Finalists: Mike Service, Geoff Dean

The delayed Nunholm Squash Club Championship Plate Final was played this week and it turned out to be a cracker. It pitched Mike Service against Geoff Dean in what was a hard hitting and competitive encounter.

Geoff flew to a 6-0 lead in the first game before Mike clawed his way back to 6-8 but it was Geoff who got game ball first. However Geoff lost the point and Mike took the game to 9-9 and had game ball too before Geoff won service back and clinched the first 10-9. Read the rest of this entry »

Squash: April 09 leagues online

1 04 2009

The April squash leagues are available on the site and can be found here or by following the Quick Link at the top of the right hand column.

The league structure has been revised for this month. The leagues are now numbered 1,2,3 to 16.

The parallel A and B leagues have been merged with players’ final positions interleaved. That merged league of perhaps ten players has then had promotion and relegation of 2 up, 2 down applied to produce the final ordering in the new structure.

Also leagues have been limited to five in a league. So that and the restructuring mean player league positions may have changed but considerable effort has been made to produce, hopefully, a fair result.

Squash Club Finals this Fri/Sat/Sun

17 03 2009

This weekend at Dumfries Sports Club will see the final matches of the Club Championship, Jim Thorburn Trophy and Junior Club Championship all played on a Finals Day on Sunday 22nd March. All club members are urged to come and support the finals weekend on what should be a great advert for squash for our area.

The Junior event will start play on Saturday afternoon where there will be a healthy number of the club’s junior players on show and it will climax with the junior final taking place on the Sunday.

The favourite will be defending Champion Iain Anderson but he is sure to be pushed all the way by last years runner up Douglas Brotherston.

In the main Club Championship event, the semi-finals will take place on Friday night at 7pm with Malcolm McCubbin taking on new Scottish Masters over 45 Champion Jimmy Wells in the first semi. This will be followed by Les Harkness who will look to overcome the new Scottish Masters over 50 Champion Robin Ridley. Two cracking matches are in prospect and a good turnout of spectators is expected.

In the Jim Thorburn trophy, the popular handicap competition, young Iain Anderson takes on the hard hitting Davy Lindsay in the first semi final at 7:15pm. This will be a tough one for Davy as he has a big handicap to turn around so expect a tight game here. The other semi sees Lister McKiddie forget the tennis court for a bit to face hotelier Phil Leek. Phil too has an advantage on the handicap so it will be a stern test for Lister.

Presentation of prizes will follow in the main lounge after ALL finals with Chair of the Squash Committee Sue Strachan.

Dumfries and Galloway Standard.
