Squash: Nunholm trophies at the 2009 Scottish Masters Championships

10 03 2009

The Nunholm Squash Club contingent had a successful trip to the 2009 Scottish Masters National Championships in Aberdeen at the weekend. They followed up their successes at the Bridge of Allan Championships by coming away clutching yet more ‘silverware’. In total they reached seven finals and plate-finals which resulted in four Scottish titles for the club.

Left to right: Sue Strachan (over-35 runner-up), Davy Rogan (over-70 and 75 champion), Keith Gristwood (over-50 plate runner-up), Jimmy Wells (over-45 champion), Raymond Kirk (over-55 plate runner-up), Robin Ridley (over-50 champion)

Jimmy Wells became Scottish over-45 champion by beating the number two seed, Chris Holt, by three games to one. Robin Ridley won the over-50s competition after his opponent had to retire due to a torn calf muscle when the score was 8-9 in the first game.

Davy Rogan retained his over-70s title and picked up the over-75 one as well for good measure. This meant the redoubtable Rogan played in two round-robin competitions, a total of five hard games.

Sue Strachan was unable to go one further than last year and was again runner-up to her nemesis, Rosie Wilson, in the women’s over-35 competition. She lost to her in two finals at the Nationals last year although Sue was “much closer this year”.

Keith Gristwood was runner-up in the over-50 plate competition as was Raymond Kirk in the over-55 plate.

All the Nunholm team that ventured north are to be congratulated on their performances, and for also battling through snow, sleet, hail and lightning to do so, as is Ronnie Carter from the Lockerbie club who also competed and was also selected for Scotland.

Nunholm Squash Club again boasted an array of players at the recent Bridge of Allan Masters tournament.

The Stirlingshire club was the venue for the penultimate Scottish ranking masters squash tournament of the season. With a large turnout of internationalists and world championship players in the various age groups and competitors travelling from England, Ireland and Belgium the capacity grounds were treated to some exciting squash.

The first Nunholm trophy came in the final of the over 45 event. There Jim Wells from the Dumfries club always maintained control in an entertaining contest to win 3-0 over Chris Holt.

There was a near miss for the team in the over 50’s final where Robin Ridley went two games up against Boyd Kidd. Apparently however, on this the Feb 14th weekend, one of Kidd’s female admirers gave him a Valentine’s kiss and told him he had to go and win “for the girls”. Unfortunately this worked and it was Robin who kissed the title goodbye and lost a cliff-hanger 3-2. Nunholm will need to consider revising their motivational techniques. Last weekend saw the new Dumfries & Galloway U-30 Squash competition sponsored by Jas. P Wilson and Backswing played at the courts of Stewartry Community Sports Club in Castle Douglas.

A healthy entry of young players from ALL Dumfries & Galloway Squash Clubs played over the course of Friday night and all day Saturday. Due to the system played all players involved were guaranteed at least 3 games as they battled for final places.

The first round provided no real shocks but Callum Wilson of SCSC had to battle back from being 8-4 down in the first game against 11 year old Dean Brotherston of Nunholm to sneak it 11-8 and to then go on and secure a 3-0 win.

The second round saw the 4 top seeds progress with probably Chris Bellwood of Nunholm being pushed hardest by club mate Iain Anderson. Chris just had the edge on consistency during the match to secure a win and a semi final spot.

The semi finals brought together the top 4 seeds, all from the Nunholm Club, with the first between Steven Wallace(1) against Chris Bellwood(3) and the second Chris McCutcheon(4) playing Jordan Currie(2). Read the rest of this entry »

Dean joined fellow Cisco players Jordan Currie(19), Chris Bellwood(19), Chris McCutcheon(20) and Iain Anderson(16) (left to right in photo) in what is the youngest ever line up of players to play a league match.

Raymond Currie, team captain of Cisco said “Dean’s older brother Douglas is away on a school ski trip this week so we gave Dean a run out and he was be no means overawed and in fact pushed his opponent Grant McVinnie all the way and just went down 3-2! ”

Eleven year old Dean Brotherston, a junior member of Nunholm Squash Club, showed at the weekend that he can compete with the best junior squash players in Scotland.

He took part in the Boys under-13 age group at the Scottish Junior National Championships at Edinburgh Sports Club along with older fellow club members, his brother Douglas and Iain Anderson, who played in the Boys under-17 age group.
