The squash club had a big contingent up at the East of Scotland Open Masters last weekend. Robin Ridley carried the flag for the club by winning the over 50s competition.

New Competition for Dumfries & Galloway Squash
13 01 2009An increase in younger players taking up squash with our Dumfries & Galloway Squash Clubs has seen the 4 main clubs come together to organise a new Regional Competition.
The Squash clubs based at Nunholm in Dumfries, Stewartry Community Sports Club (SCSC) in Castle Douglas, Lockerbie and Thornhill who all play in the popular John Henderson & Son sponsored Dumfries & Galloway Squash Leagues are launching a new Under 30 Squash Competition which will take place over the weekend of 21st/22nd February 2009.
The competition will be open to any member of a Dumfries & Galloway Squash Club who is under 30 years of age and will take place this year at SCSC in Castle Douglas. The Castle Douglas based club has probably seen the biggest increase of new younger players as the club has greatly improved its courts and facilities over the last 18 months.
Colin Davies from SCSC said “We are delighted to be the host club for this new competition and we hope to see a healthy entry of younger players from across all the Dumfries & Galloway Clubs. We would also be delighted to see as many spectators as possible over the weekend too as there will be a good level of squash to watch.”
Fellow organiser Raymond Currie from Nunholm added “The organisation of the competition has come together quite quickly as all the clubs have shown a keen interest in getting it off the ground. I would however like to express our thanks to our sponsors Jas P Wilson & Davy Douglas of Backswing for trophies and prizes.”
Entry forms for the competition are available from all the clubs involved although they are also available directly from Raymond Currie, telephone 01387 257036 for more details.
They are also available online here – 2009 U30 D&G Closed Entry Form (in PDF/Adobe format). The closing date is the end of Friday 13th February and the draw will be sent to the respective clubs by the 18th Feb. The early entrants get the t-shirt, literally.

Squash: Close battle in league
19 12 2008In the John Henderson and Sons Squash League Division 1, Peter’s Fish and Chicken Bar played hosts to Finite Engineering at Nunholm.
It was yet another closely fought contest with Peter’s Fish and Chicken Bar having the edge and securing a hard fought 3-2 (14-7) victory.
At number one, Jim Wells and Garry McKean entertained the balcony with some long and excellent rallies, Jim took the first two games, but Garry was hot on his heels and clinched the third, Wellsy then regained control and cruised home 9-3 in the fourth to win 3-1. Read the rest of this entry »

D&G Squash Championships Final 2008/9
7 12 2008Attracting more than 40 entries from around the region, the competition was sponsored by Botex Forestry Cranes, Dalbeattie.
Play started on Monday night without the big two of Jim Wells – illness and Les Harkness – injury.

Squash: Iain ready to move up
6 12 2008Teenager Iain Anderson – a member of Nunholm Squash Club – recently took part in a Junior Squash Graded tournament at Edinburgh Sports Club.
The 16-year-old, who won his divisional group in his previous tournament at Bridge of Allan, continued to show good form and again won his division quite comfortably.
This should now see Iain move up the rankings and to a higher divisional grouping where he faces much tougher matches.
The national open junior squash competitions will continue in the New Year with the first in Perth in January, but to the present and Iain will defend the Dumfries and Galloway Secondary Schools title which is again being held at Lockerbie Sports Club.
It take place on Monday, December 8 at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start.
The competition is still open for entries and anyone interested can contact Harry Earl, secretary at Lockerbie on 01461 204686 or 07808 417062 and with Raymond Currie, junior convenor at Nunholm on 01387 257036 to enter.

Squash: Wellsy wins the west
22 11 2008Jimmy Wells, the present Nunholm Club Champion, with a fine example of attacking squash as ever, recently added the West of Scotland Masters title to the Stonehaven Masters which he won in September.
Jim had a troubled season last year with injuries but still managed to represent Scotland at the Home Internationals in May.
Nunholm has been represented at over 40/45/50/55/and even over 70s in the tournaments held in Autumn 2008. Sue Strachan managed a creditable runners up performance in the West of Scotland and Jim Scriven in particular was Wellsy’s biggest threat in the over 45s in Stonehaven.
Coming up for Dumfries and Galloway Squash players is the Dumfries and Galloway Closed Championships held at Nunholm over the week beginning December 1. Entry fee is £2. All entries should go to Jim Wells by November 23. Competitors don’t need to be international standard to play in this tournament, the more the merrier! The club is hoping for a good turn out from not only Nunholm but also Thornhill, Lockerbie and Castle Douglas clubs. Everyone will get at least two matches as all first round losers will be entered into a plate competition.

Squash: Iain heads north to pull rank
22 11 2008Nunholm Squash Club’s junior champion, Iain Anderson is heading north this weekend for a junior open graded competition.
The 16-year-old, who is also Dumfries and Galloway Secondary Schools Champion will compete against players from across the country at the Edinburgh event.
Following his success at Bridge Of Allan a couple of weeks ago, where he won his divisional group, Iain will look to build on that with, hopefully, a higher ranked division where he will be tested with higher quality opposition. Read the rest of this entry »
