5-1 win to go into the Scottish Cup quarter-finals

Dumfries Men’s Tennis Team had one of their best ever Scottish Cup performances in winning in great style 5 – 1 against Peebles to go into the quarter finals of the National stage of the Scottish Cup.

The Dumfries team comprised Mickey Breen and Chris Topping at No 1, Colin Dunbar and Lister McKiddie at No 2 with Will Ziegler and Jack Copland at No 3. Dumfries now takes on one of the top Edinburgh Clubs, Dean, this Saturday, 7th June and hopefully can create an upset.

This was due to be a home fixture but due to the junior tournament being held at Nunholm that day the match will take place at Dalbeattie at 1pm.





First Club Night Competition – Mon, 2nd June

The first club night competition of the season at the Tennis Club is on Monday, the 2nd June with a draw for partner. Those wanting to take part should arrive no later than 6.30pm. There is a fee of £2 for adults and £1 for juniors and there is a prize on offer.





Busy Tennis Courts on 7/8 and 14/15 June

There are various tennis competitions scheduled for the weekends of the 7th and 14th of June. So court time will be at a premium and the Tennis Club apologises for any inconvenience to members. The details are:

  • Sat 7 & Sun 8 June all day to 6pm – Finals of South of Scotland junior road to Wimbledon competition. (This is not an open competition).
  • Sat 14 June all day to 6pm – Tennis Dumfries and Galloway Junior Closed Tournament.
  • Sun 15 June all day to 6pm – Mens and ladies open doubles competition. Draw for partner.




2008 Tennis Dumfries & Galloway Junior Championships

The Tennis Dumfries & Galloway Junior Championships are to be held on Saturday the 14 June. The closing date for entries is Tuesday the 10th June. The courts at Nunholm wil be used in conjunction with courts at the David Keswick Centre to provide at least 6 courts for the day.

Tennis Club Championships 2008

The closing dates for entry into the Dumfries Tennis Club Senior and Junior Championships are looming rapidly so please get your entries in on time. The ties are played over the course of the season with the finals day on Saturday 30th August. All standards are welcome with both open and handicap events in the various categories and entry is open to all Sports Club members.

Scottish Cup tennis on Sunday 1st June

Dumfries Men’s Tennis Team have been competing in the Dumfries & Galloway Scottish Cup qualifiers.

Dumfries defeated Dalbeattie by 6 to 3 to move into the final qualifying round to play Castle Douglas at Nunholm on 18th May. The Dumfries Team saw Mickey Breen and Chris Topping at No 1, Colin Dunbar and Lister McKiddie at No 2 with John Steele and Jack Copeland at No 3. Castle Douglas had Geoff Legg and Bruce Todd at No 1 with Colin Kennedy and Rab Peacock at No 2 and Neil Carmichael and Jeremy Culham at No 3.

The Dumfries Team had one of their best Scottish Cup performances in winning deservedly 5-1 to go into the National stage of the Scottish Cup.

Dumfries now play at home against Border rivals, Peebles in the first round of the main draw. The match takes place at 1 pm at Nunholm on Sunday, 1st June 2008 and spectators are most welcome.





Nunholm team promoted

The Dumfries Tennis Club at Nunholm has had significant success again.

The Dumfries men’s team recently competed in the Scottish National Club League. They far exceeded expectations by winning four out of five matches and gaining promotion to Division Two.

They beat top Glasgow Club, Whitecraigs 4-2; Kinnoull of Perth 4-2; Falkirk 6-0 and David Lloyd Renfrew 6-0. Read the rest of this entry »





Judy inspires young players

JUDY MURRAY, mother of Scots tennis stars Andy Murray and Jamie Murray, was the star attraction at Nunholm Sports Club’s family fun day on Sunday.

Sunday, 27th April. 11am – 2pm. Parents and children wanted! No need to be an accomplished player! All Sports Club members and non-members welcome alike. So if you are a junior, tennis or otherwise, member or not, then drag your family along.

If you want to be the next Andy Murray then you can ask his mum Judy Murray, LTA talent and performance manager for Scotland, who will be there offering advice.

Fun games and competitions. Raffle prizes and refreshments. No need to have your own racquet. Bring all the family.





Tennis Club Nights start Mon, 14th Apr

Tennis Club Nights will begin on Monday April 14 from 6:30pm onwards and will continue each Monday thereafter. The atmosphere is very relaxed and is open to adults and juniors who can play matches on a full court. The format depends on who turns up on the night and can be ladies or mens doubles and/or mixed doubles.

Free membership of British Tennis

The CEO of Tennis Scotland was on Radio Scotland on Saturday discussing the LTA’s new membership scheme. As Dumfries Tennis Club is an LTA affiliated club this means that adults can have FREE membership until the end of January 2009 (discounted thereafter), and juniors simply have free membership. More information on the benefits, for example access to tickets, is available here on the LTA website: http://www.lta.org.uk/Membership/

In particular juniors can get coaching tips, newsletters and get involved with British Tennis.
