Squash awards night

The annual awards presentations were held recently at the Nunholm courts.

The first division champions were the Backswing team of John Glendinning (capt), Graeme Fraser, Gary McKean, Andrew Morrow, Les Harkness and Lister McKiddie.

Second division champions were NFU represented by John Thin (capt), Denis Culton, Geoff Dean, Gary McCaullay, Joe Corbett and Roger McMeekin.

Player of the year (1st div) was Jim Scriven, while Chris Bellwood won the second division award but was unable to attend the ceremony.

Iain Murray from sponsors John Henderson and Sons (Solicitors and Estate Agents) presented the awards and the league once again thank them for their continued support.

APD Dumfries bettered by Corstorphine

Chris Bellwood v Dunfermline 2008Despite a century opening partnership APD Dumfries were well beaten at RH Corstorphine in National League Division 2 on Saturday.

Chris Bellwood and Jim Patterson put together the partnership against an opening attack that bowled well. However neither were seriously troubled and Bellwood sent one six flying over midwicket to threaten the tennis courts. Read the rest of this entry »





Dumfries CC & APD Team Up for 2008

APD presentation at NunholmWith the new cricket season underway, APD Ltd based at Newbie, have given Dumfries Cricket Club their backing with a sponsorship deal which will give the club valued support as they approach a challenging season. A wide range of cricket lies ahead from the 1stXl flying the flag in the Scottish National League to the Club participating in the Western Union Sunday League for the first time. In addition to senior competition, the Club is delivering a comprehensive programme of competitive junior cricket for ages 10 to 18 complemented by Junior sessions every Monday evening at Nunholm for ages 7 to 13.

Nunholm team promoted

The Dumfries Tennis Club at Nunholm has had significant success again.

The Dumfries men’s team recently competed in the Scottish National Club League. They far exceeded expectations by winning four out of five matches and gaining promotion to Division Two.

They beat top Glasgow Club, Whitecraigs 4-2; Kinnoull of Perth 4-2; Falkirk 6-0 and David Lloyd Renfrew 6-0. Read the rest of this entry »





International Caps for Nunholm Squash duo

Two local players from the Nunholm Squash Club took part in the Masters Squash Home Internationals at the Welsh Institute of Sport last the weekend.

Sue Strachan was the Scotland number 3 and Scotland captain for the Women’s over-40 team and Jimmy Wells played number 2 for the Men’s over-45 team. Read the rest of this entry »





Jordan selected for Cumbria

Eighteen year-old Jordan Currie from Dumfries, has been selected to represent Cumbria for the U19 Boys to take part in the prestigious Northern Cup, which takes place in Cheshire in May.

Hollywood Stroll Race

One of the most popular races on the local calendar is the five-mile Holywood Stroll race. Organised by Dumfries Running Club, this year’s event will be held on Tuesday, May 13 with a starting time of 7pm.

Entries are available from 6.15pm onwards at Dumfries Sports Club at Nunholm on the night of the race at a cost of £3 (£5 for those not affiliated to the SAF) for adults and £1 for juniors aged over 15. Read the rest of this entry »





Premiership opposition for Dumfries CC

After last week’s cancellation at Carlisle, the first cricket of the season for APD Dumfries, and the first home game at JMS Nunholm, is a tough friendly against Premier League side Ferguslie.

Ferguslie narrowly missed out on winning the Scottish Premier League last season and finished as runners-up. The corresponding fixture last year produced some big hitting from two of their Scotland players, World Cup all-rounder Majid Haq and middle-order batsman Omer Hussain and runs from their South African professional Con De Lange. Queen’s semi delays cricket season

APD Dumfries play their first game of the new cricket season on Sunday in a friendly fixture away against Carlisle. This was due to be played on Saturday but Queen’s Scottish Cup semi-final means that half the team are on a bus to Hampden instead.

Amongst these will be the club’s young Australian player this season, J Geary, who lands on Friday and finds himself on the football terraces on Saturday. After this abrupt introduction to Scotland, and probably its weather, he has to contend with jet-lag and some foreign cricket conditions the day after. Read the rest of this entry »





APD Dumfries set their sights on a new season

Dumfries Cricket Club start their outdoor practices at JMS Nunholm with a training session for the first team squad this Saturday, the 1st of March, at 1pm.

New Skipper Scott Beveridge warms upLast season the side, APD Dumfries, had a late season run to take them to the edge of the promotion places in Division 2 of the Lloyds TSB Scotland National League and finish in a good fourth place position.

This season, new skipper, Aussie Scott Beveridge is out to bring his country’s winning ways to the campaign and for the club to remain as contenders for promotion as they have managed over their first two years at national level.

Nunholm Squash Masters go North

The Scottish Masters Closed Championships are on this weekend in Aberdeen and will have a strong representation from the Nunholm Squash Club.

Sue Strachan in the over-35 and over-40’s women’s competitions hopes to be well placed and has a full weekend with five tough matches to play. Les Harkness is the club’s sole representative at over-40’s and Jim Wells moves on to join Ronnie Carter in the over-45’s in the largest of all the age group draws. Abbie Robertson hopes to catch the eye of the selectors at over-65 and Davy Rogan ,who is the reigning Scottish champion and number 1, hopes to hang on to his title despite strong opposition by “the young guy” in the draw who is “only 70”! The club wishes them good luck in their trek north.
