Cricket: Runs for APD Dumfries in the Cup

24 04 2012

APD Dumfries overcame Weirs, and the weather, to claim a resounding win in their Scottish Cup match on Saturday at Benfield Park Nunholm.

The Dumfries side amassed 318 for 5 wickets in their 50 overs with all the top five making scores with fifties by Scott Beveridge and Tom McBride and 47 to Chris Bellwood.

The Eco-genics Man of the Match went to Josh Geary who top scored with 76 and he was involved in a display of powerful hitting of the format’s new pink ball with fellow Aussie Joe Clarke, who scored 60 not out, that raised the total by a hundred in just the last 8 overs.

A prolonged rain interruption early in the Weirs reply threatened an abandoned match but the innings was reduced to 27 overs and they finished well short of a revised target, scoring 100 for 5. Dumfries play their second Scottish Cup group game next Saturday also at Nunholm when they face strong Edinburgh side Watsonians with their crop of past and present Scotland players.

Rusty top scorer for Nunholm

On Sunday CWE Nunholm beat Hillhead in a friendly after scoring 172 for 8 at Nunholm. ParkGate Man of the Match Russell Johnston was the mainstay scoring 66.

Hillhead reached 107 for 8 in reply after a fine opening spell of three wickets from Allan Maskrey. The 2nds start their competitive fixtures back at Hillhead on Saturday.

Also on Sunday, Tom McBride was picked for Western Warriors and was at the crease for their exciting last ball win in the Scottish Regional Series.

Dumfries Women’s training starts at Nunholm at 6pm this Friday. Newcomers to the sport are encouraged to come along. For more details about this, or about the junior or senior cricket at Nunholm, contact dumfriescricketclub@gmail.com or see www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk.

Cricket: High scoring win for APD Dumfries

18 04 2012

APD Dumfries started their season on Saturday with a convincing win over Ferguslie at Benfield Park Nunholm in their traditional first friendly match.

APD Dumfries side win season opener

Beveridge hit 80

On a remarkably good wicket and fast outfield for the time of year, Dumfries hit the ground running with opener Scott Beveridge dominating the opening exchanges and launching the first two sixes of the season. He and Chris Bellwood had put on an opening partnership of over 140 when Beveridge was unlucky to be run out for 80 by a deflection off the bowler when backing up.

Bellwood top scored with 87

Bellwood then took on the scoring mantle to earn the Anderson Kilts Man of the Match award for what was a well paced top score of 87. He and returning Aussie Josh Geary both looked in fluent form in reaching the 250. Geary was retired for a first knock fifty and Drew Dawson pushed on in the final overs with 36 not out for a big innings total off the 50 overs of 327 for 6 which was nearing a club record total.

Ferguslie, who were not at full strength on the day, struggled to make an impression on that total as the Dumfries bowlers stuck to good line and length and wickets were shared between the bowlers used. Alan Davidson and Niall Alexander claimed both openers and it was ex-Nunholm player David Sturgeon who top scored in the reply. Leg-spinners Jerry Goodin and Tom McBride and then the Aussie newcomer, Joe Clarke, each took two wickets. A final sharp run out by Tom McBride kept Ferguslie below the hundred and they were all out for 95 in the 36th over.

This weekend at Nunholm, Dumfries play Weirs in the Scottish Cup on Saturday starting at midday and then Hillhead in a friendly on Sunday.
