Cricket: Tournament win for DCC Women

29 11 2011
Dumfries Women win at Peebles

Dumfries CC Women - Peebles 6s Tournament Winners

Dumfries Women played their first competitive game on Sunday in the Cricket Scotland Indoor Sixes Tournament at Peebles.

Remarkably they managed to end up as the tournament winners on the day against much more experienced sides.

In four competitive games they registered four wins after playing St Boswells in the group stage, Stirling County in the semi-final and an impressive Edinburgh University side in the final and in the process the players had to contend with a few Scotland U17 and senior squad players playing against them.

It was a tense finish in the final with the side from Nunholm needing 9 to win off the last over chasing a total of 41. The side’s top batsman on the day, Kirsty Strachan, hit the first ball for six but was bowled next ball for 20. However Rosy Ryan scored the required three runs off the second last ball to claim an exciting and surprising win. Opener Rachel Howard once again batted through to the finish with 10 to secure the four wicket victory.

All six Dumfries players contributed either through their bowling, batting or fielding and the Cricket Scotland Women’s Cricket Manager, Kari Carswell, described the side as a good unit. Skipper Sue Strachan put the emphasis on the younger players, kept the side motivated and took on the demands of bowling the last over. Margaret Miller took the most wickets and after wickets were lost in the semi-final hit her first ball for six to win the game and Emma Miller kept well and did all the crucial hard work behind the stumps.

In particular the three youngest members of the side, Kirsty Strachan, Rachel Howard and Rosy Ryan led the side in the batting and bowling departments and Rosy’s reaction catch against Stirling in the semi-final was the catch of the tournament. As a result of their performances and potential the three are now in the Scotland U17 squad and involved in their winter training programme

It was an enjoyable experience for all teams and players and, on the day, both of the local first time entrants Dumfries CC and Galloway CC competed well and with enthusiasm.

Squash Masters in Dumfries

12 11 2011

Over the weekend of Friday 18th to Sunday 20th of November Dumfries Squash Club is hosting the third South of Scotland Masters Open Squash Championships. This is a Scottish Squash Masters Circuit ranking tournament and provides age-group competitions from the over-35s right up to the over-70s for men and over-45s and over-55s for ladies. Participants in ranking tournaments gain points which decide team selection for the Scottish Teams participating in the Home Internationals held annually in May.

According to Tournament Director, Keith Gristwood, “this is a prestigious tournament to attract to Dumfries and we are proud to be hosting it once again. We are expecting a larger entry than last year with nearly 80 players, the majority of whom will be Scottish from as far away as Inverness and Aberdeen, but also from London, Bristol, Cumbria and the Durham areas due to our club’s connections in these areas”.

He added “Even in the current economic climate our numerous tournament sponsors, in particular our main sponsor, Pathfinder Park Homes Ltd, have continued to support this tournament and without their financial assistance we would be hard pushed to put on such a quality tournament. Masters’ squash tournaments are very social events and many players are accompanied by their partners and some with their children so the town will benefit from an influx of 120+ people during the weekend seeking accommodation, food and drinks, and entertainment.”

Dumfries Squash Club’s players historically have strongly-supported the Scottish Squash Masters circuit tournaments around the country and last year six Dumfries players (Jimmy Wells, Russell Hunter, Davy Rogan, Abbie Robertson, Sue Strachan and Faith Sinclair) were selected for Scottish Masters teams. Lockerbie’s Ronnie Carter was also selected.

Spectators are welcome throughout the weekend at Dumfries Squash Club at Nunholm. In the event of a large entry, matches will be played on Friday commencing around 6pm until around 9pm. Saturday’s matches commence at 9.00am until around 6.30pm and Sunday’s (semi-finals and finals day) matches commence around 9.30am until around 5pm. Refreshments will be available from the club’s fully-licensed bar and food is being catered by The Doonhamer Bistro.

Entrance is free to all spectators. So come on down and see some of Scotland’s top Masters’ squash players and support our local participants.

Further information on the tournament, and on Dumfries Squash Club’s facilities and services, can be obtained from the club’s website www.dumfriessquashclub.co.uk. Dumfries Squash Club is Sports Club Accredited by D&G Council and in addition to holding junior squash nights on Saturdays, the Club is regularly used by three of Dumfries’ secondary schools for squash and racketball.

Cricket: Season 2011 Award Winners

8 11 2011

2011 Dumfries CC Club Award Winners

Scott Beveridge deservedly claimed the Player of the Year award at the recent Dumfries Cricket Club Awards night.

He won the award for first eleven player of the year for his performances with both bat, ball and in the field. He was also the winner of the Players’ Player of the Year from player votes cast throughout the season.

His performances helped APD Dumfries win the Scottish Championship and to win the SCU Trophy Cup competition, both for the first time. He was the side’s in-form batsman as the top Dumfries run scorer in the league with an average of forty four including four fifties. He was also the top wicket taker with eighteen wickets after bowling the most overs for the side. Importantly for the side his best ever club figures of 6 for 22 enabled Dumfries to recover to beat Kelburne and stay in contention for the title and, in the field, he somehow also managed to snap up the most catches.

The winner of the Second Eleven Player of the Year was Captain Stuart Alexander for leading the Nunholm bowling attack and steering what was at times a young side in the first year in the West SNCL Reserve League where the side finished mid table. Keeping the trophies in the family was Niall Alexander who was awarded Young Player of the Year for his quick bowling for the seconds, firsts, West U15s and in particular for Scotland U15s.

The Jimmy Steele Award for the season’s best bowling performance was won by young Cameron Telfer for remarkable figures of 7 for 23 for the seconds in their away match at Langloan and in its inaugural year the award for Women’s Player of the Year went to teenager Kirsty Strachan.

Meanwhile, on Friday November the 25th the Club will hold its AGM at Nunholm at 7pm.
