Sheep invade Nunholm

20 06 2011

Crowds gather early for Wimbledon fortnight

On Sunday there may not have been any cricket but there was plenty of action at Nunholm in the morning.

A flock of sheep leapt at the chance of pastures new and had a practice in the nets and even tried out the tennis courts.

Dalbeattie A secured the ladies championship with 2 games to spare after recording a 6-0 win over Dalbeattie B. With their nearest rivals going head to head in Dumfries, only a Dumfries win would keep the champagne on ice. However Stewartry CSC came out on top winning 4-2 which now means neither team can catch Dalbeattie A. In the other match Dumfries B entertained Beechgrove and recorded a well deserved victory, winning 5-1.

Cricket: Scotland call-up for Alexander

15 06 2011

Niall's bowling earns call up to Scotland U15s

On Saturday at Nunholm the Scottish Championship match between APD Dumfries and Stenhousemuir was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. That was not the only game to suffer as only twelve overs were bowled across the whole of Scotland in the National leagues.

On Sunday Dumfries’s Niall Alexander successfully came through a Scotland trial match played at Ferguslie to be one of twelve picked for Scotland U15s. Also figuring in representative cricket was Tom McBride who played for the Western Warriors in two Twenty/20 games against the North and was also invited to turn out for the Durham Academy side against the Lancashire Academy this week.

In the West SNCL Reserve League, Site Electrical Nunholm lost a low scoring encounter at Glenpark by seven wickets on Saturday. In bowler friendly conditions Glenpark’s McIntosh took four wickets to dismiss Nunholm for just fifty eight. An opening burst from Niall Alexander reduced then to nine for two but there there were not enough runs and Glenpark finished comfortable winners.

Davidson top scored with 83 against Galloway

On Sunday, Brammer Dumfries ended up the victors in a friendly at Galloway thanks largely to a century opening stand between Robert McBride and Davie Davidson. McBride retired on fifty and Davidson scored 83 ably assisted by youngster Todd Rafferty who scored 29 not out to reach 192 for five. Despite 35 from Druce and 36 by Hulatt Galloway finished their chase on 102 for 9 with two wickets each to Dave Strachan, Matt Williams and Rafferty.

This Saturday both Dumfries sides are away. APD Dumfries play at West Lothian in the Scottish Championship and Site Electrical Dumfries, the 2nd XI, are at Renfrew. However there is a match at Nunholm on Saturday with Hillhead playing Galloway in the West Premiership. The Hillhead ground is being redeveloped this season and they are playing their ‘home’ fixtures at neutral venues.

The club at Nunholm welcomes new players; senior, junior, women and girls. Senior training takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays and junior and women/girls coaching is on Monday evenings. For details contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455 or see www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk

Cricket: APD Dumfries beat old rivals Penicuik

8 06 2011

Wickets for Niall on Saturday and runs on Sunday

APD Dumfries played their first league fixture at Penicuik for sixteen years on Saturday and won by five wickets in the Scottish Championship to move into third place in the league. Penicuik were put in and were bowled out for 178. Jim Patterson took three wickets and Beveridge, Niall Alexander and Maskrey took two each. Dumfries got the runs with overs to spare and five wickets down thanks to forties from Drew Dawson and Carson & Trotter Man of the Match Scott Beveridge.

Also on Saturday Site Electrical Nunholm, the Dumfries 2nd XI, beat Shawholm in a close match at Nunholm in the West SNCL Reserve League. Trefor Williams scored sixty in the Dumfries team’s total of 178 and Cameron Telfer took three wickets as the side from Poloc fell seven runs short in a dramatic finish.

Brammer Dumfries, the Sunday XI, travelled to Prestwick and eventually ‘breezed’ to a victory in the West Sunday league thanks mainly to overseas’ player Chad Breetzke. Chasing a stiff target of 204 in 40 overs, the South African, batting at three, took the game away from the opposition with a sparkling century by hitting the bad ball extremely hard. He received excellent support from fifteen-year-old Niall Alexander who hit 67 not out, his first senior fifty, to ensure the win.

That hundred did not prove to be the top score of the day by a player from Nunholm. That was achieved by eleven year old junior Chris McBride who scored his first century playing in a regional fixture between West U12s and Tayside & Fife. He scored 115 opening the batting in a 35 over match. He went one better than his brother Tom McBride who scored a fifty for Scotland U19s in their one wicket win over Scottish Universities last week.

This Saturday Dumfries are at home to Stenhousemuir and the seconds are away at Glenpark. The club at Nunholm welcomes new players; senior, junior, women and girls. Senior training takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays and junior and women/girls coaching is on Monday evenings. For details contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455 or see www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk .

Tennis: Changes to daylight court bookings

7 06 2011

Over the past couple of months more and more players have failed to complete the second player booking, therefore to insure that the club still gets the correct court fee and we still have a system which allows us to check correct court usage, we are slightly changing the way day time tennis is booked. NOTE THAT THE CHANGES BELOW ARE NOW LIVE!

Please note that NO changes have occurred with regards to floodlit tennis.

The tennis club and main sports club still want to charge 20p per court session during the day, so in order to make it more user friendly the cost of the courts will now be 20p per player which has increased from the previous 10p.

However, the club will now accept (daylight tennis only) that when 1 player books/reserves a court, whether it be at the kiosk or via the internet, that this will complete the booking/reservation. This will allow players to enter the courts before their start time, which stops players hanging about the console waiting for the correct time, which was the biggest complaint/inconvenience.

This now means that only 1 player will be charged so it is up to each player to resolve who pays.

Please note the system will still take 2 players booking and charge both players, this cannot be refunded, so you have to learn quickly and the lights will continue to work with both players booking the courts as normal.

Guest Fees
The club would ask all player who bring guests down to please continue to book using their fob twice, the only difference being is that your guest fee would rise to £2.20 to complete the booking.

Cricket: Maskrey and McBride dump SMRH

1 06 2011

McBride and Maskrey each took 4 wickets against SMRH

APD Dumfries finally completed a home league match with a heavy nine wicket defeat of SMRH in the Scottish Championship on Saturday. The Edinburgh side could only muster a total of forty one after opening bowlers Allan Maskrey and Robert McBride cut through the batting line-up with four wickets each. Drew Dawson then took the Nunholm side to an easy win with twenty six not out.

Captain Corbett-Byers observed “I was lucky enough to win the toss and normally at Nunholm you’d have no hesitation in batting, but the wicket was a bit sticky and I decided to put them in. Our opening bowlers simply put the ball on a good line and length and we held our catches well.” Six catches were taken behind the wicket with Beveridge snaffling three of them.

The previous evening Dumfries has registered another nine wicket win at Selkirk in the Murgitroyd Twenty/20 Cup. There it was young opening bowler Niall Alexander that took four wickets. Stuart Corbett-Byers and Chad Breetzke were not out on 32 and 29 at the finish.

However after dismissing their league opponents for forty one on Saturday Dumfries understood that experience the following day at Nunholm. The side suffered from a poor batting performance against Renfrew in the Scottish Cup which saw them collapse to forty seven all out and an inevitable defeat in a game which Renfrew won by nine wickets.

This Saturday APD Dumfries are away at Penicuik in the Scottish Championship League and, after a cancelled match last Saturday, the seconds, Site Electrical Nunholm are at home against Shawholm in the West SNCL Reserve League and the Sunday XI play at Prestwick.

Cricket: Dumfries fixtures hit by weather

25 05 2011

Chad receives his Dumfries cap from the skipper

ADP Dumfries experienced their third “no result” in a row on Saturday when their Championship match against Edinburgh Accies at Nunholm was abandoned due to rain with Dumfries in a strong position of 208 for 1 after 35 overs. Davie Davidson was stranded twelve short of a century, on 88 not out, with Scott Beveridge close behind on 70 not out.

That left the Dumfries side’s young overseas player, Chad Breetzke, waiting as next man in for over twenty overs. May’s poor cricketing weather, unlike in April, have left him doubtful if it ever stops raining in Scotland since after arriving early in May he has yet to bat for the firsts or complete a senior game.

He comes fresh from a South African summer where he played first grade cricket and where he has represented Eastern Provinces as a batsman and keeper at each age group up to and including U19s. He worked as a cricket coach over their season and his knowledge as a South African Level 2 coach is proving an asset to the club’s development programme for juniors and seniors.

Another match abandoned, without a ball being bowled, was the Site Electrical Nunholm fixture at Partick in the West SNCL Reserve League, as was the Sunday fixture at Ayr.

This weekend APD Dumfries have two home matches, a Championship league match against SMRH on Saturday, a Scottish Cup match against Renfrew on Sunday and, weather permitting, a Murgitroyd Twenty/20 game at Selkirk on Friday evening. The seconds, Site Electrical Nunholm, travel on Saturday to play Shawholm in the West SNCL Reserve League.
