Cricket: Bevo short of 1st game century

20 04 2010

Dumfries Cricket Club started their cricket season last Saturday with a flow of runs against Ferguslie in the sun at Nunholm. They achieved their objective of comprehensive warm-up with a 188 run win in a precursor to the league season.

The visitors Ferguslie were not close to full strength. That included one of their number being stranded abroad by some volcanic ash. Instead it was Dumfries batting first that provided the pyrotechnics as they started at a run a ball.

Tom McBride hit a series of boundaries as he hurried to 33 before being caught behind by the wicket-keeper. Russell Johnston was more circumspect and he played second fiddle while Scott Beveridge provided the fireworks.

The pair marked their hundred partnership in the 24th over when the score passed one hundred and fifty. Beveridge gradually turned up the heat during his innings including hitting 20 in one over off one unfortunate bowler. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: Site Electrical new DCC sponsors

20 04 2010

Sunday Captain, Josh Geary, with 1sts Captain and Vice Captain, Stuart Byers and Jim Patterson, thank Colin Wallace of Site Electrical

Dumfries Cricket Club are pleased to welcome new sponsors of the club this season. Site Electrical are sponsoring the club, and the side which plays in the Strathclyde Sunday League, which will be known as Site Electrical Dumfries, and the Nunholm Scoreboard.

Colin Wallace, the Scottish Contracts Manager for the company who are specialist contractors to the water and waste water industry, said “I have had a long time association with the club and I am keen that our support will help Dumfries continue its progression over the coming years.”

“It has been striking how youth development has developed at the club with the number of juniors, at their Monday night sessions, having increased significantly.”

“The standard of cricket at Nunholm has also increased over recent years and has resulted in the entry into the National Leagues. It would be good to see that progression continued with the support of Site Electrical.”

Appropriately the sponsored team, Site Electrical Dumfries, is youth orientated and is where the club’s younger players get their first introduction to senior and to league cricket. Last year they had a successful season and were promoted to Division 2.

Cricket: Josh back for APD Dumfries

7 04 2010

Josh - top run scorer for APD Dumfries last season

The cricket season is fast approaching for Dumfries Cricket Club with their first fixtures of the year taking place next weekend with two friendly games against Ferguslie on Saturday (17th) and Hillhead on the Sunday (18th).

The match against Ferguslie takes on greater significance since the Paisley club find themselves in the same division of the National Leagues as APD Dumfries after two successive relegations dropped them from the Premier League. The sides play ‘for real’ two weeks later at Ferguslie in the opening league match of Division 2.

After just missing out on promotion last season APD Dumfries will be looking to Aussie Josh Geary who is back for another season to produce last year’s batting form that helped make him the club’s Players’ Player of the Year. He was the club’s top run scorer in the league with 466 runs at an impressive average of nearly 47 and he was the side’s ‘finisher’ in a number of run chases.

Once more for 2010, as they have done for all of the club’s four years in the Scottish National Leagues, Dumfries are sponsored by APD Ltd. The seconds, JMS Nunholm, are again sponsored by JMS Cricket Ltd and a new sponsor Site Electrical Ltd is backing the club and the youth orientated Sunday XI now in Division 2 of the Strathclyde League after they gained promotion in 2009. The club are very grateful for all their valuable support.

Cricket: Byers is Dumfries Player of the Year

Stuart Corbett-Byers in 20/20 action

Stuart Corbett-Byers retained the Dumfries Cricket Club 1st XI Player of the Year Award for last season at the Annual Dinner and Awards held at the club last Friday.

The wicketkeeper-batsman hit two vital centuries for APD Dumfries during the season and finished with an average of over 40. He was also ranked as the top National League Division 2 keeper claiming 20 victims behind the stumps, and as a result he was amongst the nominees for batsman of the year and all-rounder of the year in the division.

The 2nd XI Player of the Year went to Chris McCutcheon for his all-round displays with bat and ball which were instrumental in JMS Nunholm retaining their place in Western Union Division 2.

The Jimmy Steele Bowling Trophy was awarded to Chris Bellwood for his devastating spell of 6 for 14 against Premier League side Greenock in the National 20/20 semi-final on the last day of the season.

Young player of the year went to the promising Douglas Brotherston. His bowling and batting featured in games for the firsts, seconds, the Sunday XI and in the John Henderson and Sons Midweek League winning team, the club’s youth side, Coatbridge Cold Store Colts.

Player votes cast throughout the season resulted in Josh Geary being named Player’s Player of the Year. His on-field contributions and mature batting performances sealed several APD Dumfries victories and meant he was the side’s top run scorer for the season.

Training for senior players continues on Saturday mornings from 11am at Nunholm. New players are welcome to drop in or they can contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455. Read the rest of this entry »

Tom McBride, from Dumfries Cricket Club, is packing his bags to experience cricket in India. Next week he leaves for the Pune Cricket Academy near Mumbai for an intensive twelve day National Academy tour of the sub-continent.

Last year he played for Scotland U17s and Scotland U19s and the 18 year old has spent the winter as one of seven players invited onto Scotland’s Performance Course at Telford College in Edinburgh. He joins those in the National Academy Squad in making up a 15-man party.

The focus will be on training with three games scheduled later in the stay including a planned match against the state U19 side.

Craig Wright, ex-Scotland captain, and now the National Performance Development Manager is one of the coaches travelling. Once in India the group will be under the direction of experienced local coaches well versed in the local conditions.

Wright commented that “the aim is for the batsmen to work on playing spin and for the bowlers to master very different conditions. The expertise at what is a global cricket academy, the facilities available and the experience will stretch their abilities.”

“Tommy has worked really hard on his game over the past months, both on the physical and the technical aspects. He is also benefitting from training with the others in the performance group some of whom gained their first caps for the full Scotland side last year.”

Cricket: Dumfries train-up for the summer

10 03 2010

Dumfries Cricket Club resume their senior training sessions at Nunholm this weekend. The session for senior players, from all the club’s teams, runs from 11am to 1pm this Saturday morning, the 13th March, and on subsequent Saturdays.

The club’s first XI, APD Dumfries, play in the Scottish National League Division 2. The second XI, JMS Nunholm, play in Western Union Division 2 and the youthful Sunday XI, Site Electrical Dumfries, have been promoted to the Strathclyde Sunday League Division 2.

The club welcomes new players, senior or junior, for the summer whether for one of the two midweek evening teams, friendly matches, or league cricket on a Saturday or Sunday. They can drop in at a training session at Nunholm or contact Trefor Williams on 01387 256455. More information about the club is available at http://www.dumfriescricketclub.co.uk.

The new 1st XI captain for 2010, Stuart Corbett-Byers commented “APD Dumfries had one of their best ever seasons last year. We just fell short in the very last weekend of the season and missed out in the promotion play-off match for National Division 1.”

“This year we need to retain that standard and learn from the few lost matches and opportunities of last season.”

APD Dumfries’s first league match takes place on the 1st of May away at Ferguslie.

To herald the new season the club’s Annual Awards Dinner takes place next Friday, the 19th March at the Casa Mia restaurant and at the Nunholm clubhouse from 6:30pm.
