APD Dumfries notched up a convincing win after Prestwick were reduced to 107 all out in their National League Division 2 encounter at Nunholm on Saturday. Chief destroyer was Jim Patterson who in his new role as opening bowler took three wickets.

Dumfries’s Stuart Alexander hit the stumps with the first ball of the match and four wickets fell for just nine runs in the fifties as the heart was ripped out of the Prestwick innings to leave them on 56 for 6.

Prestwick then managed their highest partnership but Jerry Goodin took two wickets and Chris Bellwood also took two to finish the innings off as Prestwick struggled to 107 all out after 37 overs.

Dumfries took just under 18 overs to seal the win. Opener Drew Dawson got 42 and Stuart Corbett-Byers showed that the stand-in captaincy agreed with him as he extended his runs in-office to nearly 250 in three games with 41 not out.

The win means that the Dumfries side stays in second spot but Falkland remain unbeaten in top spot. This Saturday the team are away at third placed RH Corstorphine for whom a win leapfrogs them into second place. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: Two Centuries not enough for Dumfries

Byo - doing his sponsors, the Nunholm Card School, proud.

Two Dumfries century makers were not enough to guide their respective sides to victory last Saturday.

Stuart Corbett-Byers played one of the best innings seen for the club as he hit his second consecutive century with 103 for second placed APD Dumfries at leaders Falkland in National League Division 2. However that wasn’t enough in the run chase and the side fell short of the winning target of 258 by 15 runs.

Jim Patterson produced a miserly opening bowling spell and Chris Bellwood and Alan Davidson each chipped in with two wickets. However from 88 for 2 after 30 overs the Falkland batsmen punished anything short or full pitched on a good wicket to amass 257 for 7 twenty overs later with their professional, Thakkar, top scoring with 87.

In comparison, after 30 overs of their innings Dumfries were well positioned on 142 for 2 but Geary was then out for a fine 48 and Corbett-Byers followed just short of the two hundred mark. Sixty plus runs in the last ten overs proved too much for the remaining batsmen against the left-arm spin of Singh and the side were all out in the final over.

This weekend they play Prestwick at home in the league on Saturday and then away in the Scottish Cup on Sunday. Read the rest of this entry »

APD Dumfries recorded an important win in National League Division 2 on Saturday by beating Freuchie at Nunholm by a convincing 8 wickets. Stuart Corbett-Byers starred by hitting an excellent unbeaten century as the side successfully chased 198.

This was after Stuart Alexander struck early with two wickets and Chris Bellwood made an impact in the Dumfries bowling attack by taking four wickets for thirty four as Freuchie finished on 198 for 8.

In reply Corbett-Byers (sponsored by the Nunholm Card School) came in with the score on 1 and together with Josh Geary, who finished on 63 not out, finished on exactly 100 not out and saw his side through to a win with 15 overs to spare. This was the club’s first century of the season and the first in the National League since 2006.

The win strengthens the side’s hold on second place. The game this Saturday looks like a crunch encounter when they are away at the leaders Falkland who are currently unbeaten with five wins out of five. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: Dumfries’s juniors in action

10 06 2009

The DG U13 Cricket League had a top two clash at Nunholm last Sunday when the two sides from the West of the region played out for top spot. The match report can be read here.

This year there is a new initiative for youth cricket in the West with a Western Regional Academy team playing in Western Union Division 1. They play each team, away, once just as the Scotland Under-19s do in the National Premier League.

Gatehouse of Fleet played host to Sunday’s match against Galloway. The club’s Thomas McBride, the WCA captain, top scored for his side with a fifty. The match report for that game can be found here.

APD Dumfries leapfrogged Edinburgh to take their second place spot with a heavy 138 run victory away in Scottish National League Division 2.

Dumfries rattled up their biggest total of the league season by setting a target of 252 for 7. The mainstay of the innings was Josh Geary who compiled an excellent 69 batting at number 4.

The Davidson openers, Davie and Alan, again got the side off to a good start with a 72 run opening partnership. Geary then had useful partnerships with Dawson and skipper Beveridge who scored 30. When he and then Geary were out to make it 224 for 6 a Corbett-Byers cameo boosted the final total to 252. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: Runs and wickets for the club’s juniors

3 06 2009

Dumfries and Galloway Under 17s won against Gatehouse CC on Sunday in a warm-up match for upcoming area matches.

Gatehouse batted first and Sachin set the standards with a fine display of stroke-making with 80 in a total of 183 all out, but the fielding and bowling was equally impressive. The wickets were shared around with Anthony Hulatt the only bowler to take 2 wickets. The pick of the bowlers was Chris Edgar who only conceded 9 runs from his 8 overs.

Douglas Brotherstone (59) and Adam Elliot (37) both played entertaining innings and made sure that the four wicket victory was achieved. However it was Robbie Carson who steered the side home with an efficient unbeaten knock of 17 no.

In the DG U13 League Dumfries Cowboys beat Langholm/Lockerbie Lightning in a high scoring game at Nunholm. Niall Alexander scored an unbeaten fifty in the 152 for 4 and Douglas Hubbert took three wickets as the Langholm side fell 39 runs short. Callum Bell and James Cook both took 2 wickets for the visitors while Stuart Murray scored 22 no.

At Langholm where Langholm Lightning took on Dumfries Injuns runs were harder but the game was just as hard-fought. The Dumfries side batted first and the Langholm team must have fancied chasing the 63 runs total. However some very good bowling proved too much and they had to settle for 49 all out. Connor Bowie, Chris McBride and Todd Rafferty took 3 wickets apiece.

Cricket: APD Dumfries winning run over

APD Dumfries failed to register their third win when they were outbatted at West Lothian in National League Division 2.

After five wickets were down in the fifties it needed a fighting fifty partnership from Jim Patterson with 29 and Jerry Goodin with 23 to rescue the side from a perilous 99 for 7. Only opener Alan Davidson got past twenty with 27 and the side needed to bowl and field well to defend the all out total of 160.

The spin of Scott Beveridge was needed to get rid of the two openers and a fine opening spell from Jim Patterson removed numbers 4 and 5. However their South African professional, Van Wyk (47no), found a partner in Fleming (41no) and 81 for 4 was the best it got for Dumfries as they went down by 6 wickets.  Read the rest of this entry »

Byo keeping his sponsors, the Nunholm Card School, entertained.

Stuart Corbett-Byers provided a run feast in APD Dumfries’s ten wicket win over St Boswells in the Scottish 20/20 Cup on Sunday.

Chasing a total of 93 he amassed a score of 78 not out in just 12 overs. The die was cast for St Boswells when he hit the first over for 18.

Thereafter they failed to subdue him as he sent spectators diving for covers with a spate of sizes and fours.

However St Boswells could claim the sixes of the day with two being launched out of the ground, over the Nunholm road and disturbing the Sunday diners at the Casa Mia.

Despite that Dumfries contained their innings to below five an over on a good wicket with both Robert McBride and Jerry Goodin taking two wickets apiece.

This followed on from nearly another ten wicket win at Nunholm over Renfrew in National League Division 2. Read the rest of this entry »

Cricket: APD Dumfries win National League Opener

Davie Davidson scores the 1st league 50 of the season

Davie Davidson scores the 1st league 50 of the season

Playing Weirs on Saturday at Nunholm, APD Dumfries won their first league match of the season by a healthy 84 runs in National League Division 2.

The Dumfries side put up 217 batting first with the first league fifty being scored by opener Davie Davidson. His 58 and 41 from Geary at number 4 were the backbone of the innings and when Davidson was caught at 142, 12 overs and seven wickets were left.

Wickets then fell as the scoring rate rose with Dawson adding a useful 21. Those final overs contributed about six an over for the Doonhamers to reach 217 for 9 after 50 overs.

Despite losing Alexander to injury after bowling only three overs, Jim Patterson and then Geary put pressure on the Weirs batting. Each took a wicket to restrict the total to 19 off ten. Two more catches off Geary and one in left-armer Beveridge’s first over meant five wickets down for below fifty.

Spinners Beveridge and Goodin then gradually mopped up the innings. Skipper Beveridge finished with two wickets and Goodin four as the run chase ended well short on 133. Next Saturday Dumfries play away at SMRH. Read the rest of this entry »

APD Dumfries won convincingly in Sunday’s warm-up against First Division Ferguslie as did JMS Nunholm who also played a friendly at Hawick. The firsts start their National League campaign at Nunholm this Saturday with a Division 2 fixture against Weirs.

The first eleven side beat Ferguslie by 99 runs. The seconds won by a wider margin of 155.

At Nunholm Dumfries opted to bat first but suffered early setbacks against the Ferguslie SNCL opening attack. Davie Davidson and Geary had revived the innings with a fifty partnership when Davidson was out caught for 38. Stuart Corbett-Byers and Geary carried on with another fifty partnership until Geary was bowled for a valuable 42. Then Byers fell LBW for 33 at the same score. Read the rest of this entry »
